There are a few words that (a) always set me off giggling and possibly only one that (b) always make me cringe.
(a) moist ( tiny squeak) , gusset( chortle), flange ( lost it altogether) .
(b) cu*t. cant even believe I've typed that.

What are yours?

Oxter and lisk make me giggle and remind me of my childhood. We were always told to make sure they were clean.

Haven't heard oxter for years and yes they do need to be kept clean!

"twat" is a word I've used for the first time and it makes me cringe. Where we used to live it was everyday parlance but I would not let my children use it.
When DD married I heard my SILs mother use it. I remarked to DD it was a bit crude and she laughed and said her MIL would die if she knew what it meant but non of them dare tell her. I just felt how cruel for the family to be sniggering behind the poor woman's back.

If one hates a word and it makes one cringe, what is the logic behind starting a thread which will then repeat that word or those words every time one looks at it? confusedconfused

Hi the point of the thread was to find out what words makes others laugh or cringe.

Some of the words are the same for lots of people, others less common. When I am reading through these, some make me laugh, others make me cringe, others have no effect at all on me and are simply words but it amuses me that my moist is someone else's succulent, and it's interesting to hear the views of others on words that describe a grandmother, for example.

I hate the word and concept of celebrity and especially if abbreviated to celeb .

Baby bump .

And when the Beatles were very popular - the mop tops .

I used to like and use the word iconic .
Now I'm sick of hearing it .
Bitches being called lady dogs ...

Each to their own .

eazybee Most abbreviations such as STs, PMT, and all the DDs, DILs, DH, DGS, DGGD, OH, LO (little one apparently) and the confusing SIL (son-in-law, sister in law?) used on here.
I'm with you on that! Can't stand abbreviations as I often don't know what they mean or have to stop and think. Give me proper words any day.

Same here, Kate1949. I'm Nan too; can't bear Granny.

I've never liked the word prong, for some reason.

Nan for grandmother was mentioned above. I am Nan. With apologies to all the grannies, Granny makes me cringe. I think of a 100 year old woman, hair in a bun, glasses perched on the end of her nose, wearing a shawl and knitting.

I'm okay with Granny and I am Grandma myself. Nothing wrong with a shawl and glasses, or even knitting. But Nan makes me think of those 1950s women standing outside their terraced houses in their flowery pinnies, possibly with rollers in their hair.

Hi, I've only just logged on and you've set me off again with these.
nanna8 yes a profile would be great wouldn't it!

I've just thought of some phrases from work that make me cringe, including " push the envelope" and for me the very worst " bring the best of yourself to work every day" which is fine but what do I do with the rest of me ?

I’m Granny and even with my hair loss I certainly don’t look like that !

Never knitted in my life

Succulent makes me shudder. People use it to describe good food but, for reasons I can't understand, it makes me think of a blocked drain.

Moist
Worst word ever.

I can't forget an episode of The Simpsons when Marge tries on a pair of hired shoes at the bowling alley and says they're "warm and moist"!

Here's a couple of my cringers - suppurate and pus ?

Plus hubby, bub and kiddies.
I hate it when I say I will 'pop' the meat in the oven, I will be 'popping' into Sainsbury's, and worst of all, I shall just put the 'topping' on the cake. No idea why.

Melody is a beautiful word, and in a completely different way, I like discombobulate.

Baggs Thu 28-Jul-22 08:38:58

So, male soldiers using that c-word in the OP amongst themselves about themselves (which I've just read in a novel) had no effect at all except to increase my understanding of what the author was saying.

Baggs Thu 28-Jul-22 08:36:27

I can't think of any. Words are words. How they are used, for what purpose, is what matters.

Urmstongran Thu 28-Jul-22 08:34:30

I like ‘marvellous’ especially when said by Himself in a drawn out manner it just sounds great when people ask him “how are you?”
?

Oldnproud Thu 28-Jul-22 08:26:45

Fur baby always makes me cringe. Likewise, sprogs.

There are many words that only make me cringe when used in a certain context or tone of voice,, such as bless, and Mummy / Daddy in the context mentioned above by JaxJacky.

Ali23 Thu 28-Jul-22 08:11:18

Irma, my DH hates the word soulmate too! Also, ‘gutted’ drives him mad.
For me, I cringe at strong swear words...less offended now than I used to be, but still don’t like them at all.

Pantglas2 Thu 28-Jul-22 08:07:27

Tummy, front bottom, Number Twos, are a few that grate on me.
I love the word delicious - pronouncing it slowly makes me salivate…?
