Hear hear volver ?

rafichagran Sat 30-Jul-22 10:02:14

Sorry pressed too soon, I know they punctuate far better than me, but we are not all from the same back ground and I think people should factor that in before criticising.

Blossoming Sat 30-Jul-22 10:00:34

I use the dots for a pregnant pause…

others, and missing space between the comma and "and".

daresay daresay is not a word in general usage, correct usage is "dare say"

I think that Elegran doesn't pay enough attention to getting the spaces in the right place.

Not nice, is it?

Comment on the content of the posts, the questions, the ideas of the poster. Commenting on the spelling/punctuation and drawing assumptions about the poster's actions is bad form.

I agree, it's not nice to comment on people Grammar, I have done well in life but left school with only a couple of O levels, I accept posters on here are, ex teachers, and have been to Uni

So why did GNHQ delete them in the first place?

No idea Calendargirl that's why I queried it with GNHQ! But they were very nice about it, said they'd go back and check, did so and then confirmed the posts were absolutely fine and would be reinstated.

If they just delete posts willy nilly because one particular poster doesn’t approve of it, for whatever reason, then no wonder there are so many deleted posts. Good point!

Aveline Sat 30-Jul-22 09:48:12

Elegran says it all (as ever)

Elegran Sat 30-Jul-22 09:46:07

AcornFairy "Let's eat, grandma." vs "Let's eat grandma"

lixy Sat 30-Jul-22 09:43:35

I'm with Georgesgran - can't beat a good hyphen!

Punctuation rules are totally different online somehow - wouldn't use a hyphen in an actual handwritten letter on paper.

The rules for reporting are equally mysterious to me. I have once reported something that was clearly advertising but have no idea why other posts, sometimes those of people who post frequently, are reported.

merlotgran Sat 30-Jul-22 09:41:59

I like to use hyphens as well - makes a change from a comma.

AcornFairy Sat 30-Jul-22 09:41:58

All these comments about punctuation are interesting; but a bit off-topic!!!! But punctuation does serve a purpose and it often prevents misunderstanding and misinterpretation.......(......meaning I could say more but don't want to divert from the original post even more).

I use ellipsis too...

And never feel the need...to point out how others decide to punctuate their posts...and talk about them as if they weren't there...and make assumptions about them...

Surely that's just good manners...?

I use good manners on GN all the time, and I have done for 11 years. I avoid criticising others, and I don't even join in dingdong flyting matches to reply to carping posts which criticise others.

However, it is very difficult to read some posts as I find myself holding my breath until the poster has reached the end of their sentence/statement and finished it off with the customary full stop and single space. So I don't read those posts.

I daresay some would say that is selfish of me, but as I take care myself to write posts that are easy to read and clearly set out, I reserve the right to point out if another post doesn't do that. I don't condemn the poster, just the post.

henetha Sat 30-Jul-22 09:33:35

I like the dots and often use them.

volver Sat 30-Jul-22 09:29:57

Well I hope we've all learnt how to punctuate to the standards expected of a Gran.

The day is not wasted. confused

Will we all be getting marks out of 10 from now on?

Elegran Sat 30-Jul-22 09:27:05

Marydoll

I do it too. It signifies a pause.

A single full stop followed by a single space is enough.

"In grammar and rhetoric, an ellipsis is the omission of one or more words, which must be supplied by the listener or reader for the sentence to be understood. It is also the name of the punctuation mark ("...") used to show the location of missing words in a direct quote. This mark can also be used to indicate a long pause or a speech trailing off." www.thoughtco.com/ellipsis-grammar-and-rhetoric-1690640

I spread out the dots like this . . . where I have left out part of a text that I am quoting, purely to make it easier than...to see that there is a space, and not just a gasp.

Georgesgran Sat 30-Jul-22 09:25:16

I love a hyphen - use them all the time - I suppose I should use a colon or semi-colon?

Calendargirl Sat 30-Jul-22 09:23:52

Chewbacca

I recently had 2 posts deleted, on the same thread, for "breaking guidelines". I contacted GNHQ to ask why and they had a look at them, confirmed that they hadn't broken any guidelines at all, apologised and reinstated them immediately. But I imagine that someone must have reported them in the first place. hmm

So why did GNHQ delete them in the first place?

I assumed that if someone reported a post as unsuitable or breaking guidelines, surely HQ should look at said post and they should then decide if it should be deleted?

If they just delete posts willy nilly because one particular poster doesn’t approve of it, for whatever reason, then no wonder there are so many deleted posts.

Granmarderby10 Sat 30-Jul-22 09:20:48

I do all of that……(my bad)

I don't use..... but I do use lots of !!!!!

Marydoll Sat 30-Jul-22 09:09:01

I don't sleep well and often the spammers post during the night, to avoid being noticed. I used to report spam, when I couldn't sleep and was trawling GN and noticed them.
Sometimes posters don't realise that a post is spam and click a dodgy link.

Yammy Sat 30-Jul-22 09:06:34

I reason could be,I had one of my own postings taken down because I realised I could be recognised by it. Maybe others do the same.
