On line supermarket orders - substitutes

Wonder who decides what to substitute when item requested is not available? Is the the person who does the packing?

I use Pomigranit seeds in my salads, and have a small tub of these most weeks. Been told, NOT AVAILABLE this week,- fair enough - I can live without them - BUT they have substituted for these seeds - A PINEAPPLE!! Well, I suppose both start with a 'P'!!!!

Any other weird substitutions made?

To be fair to Tesco, most of the substitutions they have made on my orders have been good.
I buy a lot of cheap brands, so substitutions of those are normally for more expensive ones, and i dont get charged extra for them.

Personally, I am not tempted to tick the 'no substitutions^' box, because I can send any I don't want straight back with the driver.
All I need to do is remember to read the invoice they've emailed to me in advance, rather than rely on spotting them as I empty the trays onto the kitchen table. I forget quite often!

Someone ordered Marmite and got fast-acting yeast. I think the pickers were taking the rise!

Someone else ordered toilet paper and got scouring pads.

I find those electronic invoices sent a few hours earlier are a big improvement. One week I had a substitution that I was not sure about (was it free of gluten?) so I had time to look it up on the Tesco website and check the ingredients.

I will always remember the first Easter of the pandemic when I thought I would treat myself to a bottle of Rosé Prosecco as I was going to be on my own sad
Waitrose had run out and for my substitution I got a £38 bottle of pink champagne (at the Prosecco price of under £10)
I have never complained about substitutions since! ???

So not only the same colour but also the same colour in a different language! smile

The best I've heard is a packet of cornflakes and a jar of peanut butter as a sub for crunchy nut cornflakes. I've had a few iffy ones like slices of Polish cheese for cheddar but usually OK-ish!

I once ordered a can of WD40 with something called a smart straw attached. Instead, I got a packet of drinking straws!

Asda allows you to select No Substitutions for each item you order. Otherwise you will receive subs but you just hand them back fir a refund.

Apple Sauce not available last week at Tesco, substitute on offer was Tartare Sauce! Ironing Water not available either, substitute was Fabric Conditioner.

Sainsburys are pretty good. They email to let you know of any substitutions & you can return them if not right. A lot of the time the subs are better than what has been ordered so no complaints! You have the chance at Checkout to refuse any substitutions for a particular item.

I think they must use an algorithem. I just send the unwonted item back.

Foxyferret Wed 03-Aug-22 12:30:42

Tesco are very good. You can select whether you want a sub on each item. Today I got some items that due date was tomorrow so I went to give them back to the driver and he said keep them anyway and he took them off my bill. Also I have had substitutes that cost more but they match it with the price of your original choice. Large pack of cornflakes for price of small.

My daughter ordered a pack of 4 nailbrushes from Tesco and received a ball of string!!

I've had loads of crazy substituted items when I used to regularly do online shopping with ASDA, but the one that really got my back up was they substituted cat food for dog food....our cats were not impressed and did not suddenly turn into dogs, yet trying to explain that to an idiot on the other end of the phone was hard work! I demanded a full refund for all the dog food and they told me to keep it anyway..as we do not have a dog, a friend took some of it and 'our' foxes got the rest. Must admit we've only done a few ASDA online shops since moving house and so far much better...did get some bite and sting cream instead of Germoline antiseptic cream and they tried substituting crisps for horrible cheesy ones but we sent them back with the driver and got a reasonably prompt refund.

Just select you don’t want a substitution! Saves the faff.

Blondiescot Wed 03-Aug-22 13:44:41

This is why I don't do online grocery shopping. I've been known to rake through every item or packet of something on a shelf (fresh or chilled stuff) until I find the one with the longest date or which looks best. I don't trust anyone else to pick it for me.

You can’t do that with an Ocado shop but can refuse subs upon delivery.

Harmonypuss Wed 03-Aug-22 14:02:23

Many years ago I ordered some kids vitamins for my 7yr old and the delivery driver turned up with over 60s vitamins, even my mum wasn't old enough to qualify for them at the time!
I've had plain water instead of micellar water, a bag of flour instead of a bunch of flowers, a pot of double cream instead of nappy cream, amongst various others but the best/weirdest one was sellotape instead of senokot!

AshleysGran Wed 03-Aug-22 14:37:24

Admittedly this was while I was shopping and before I placed the order, but.....???

AshleysGran Wed 03-Aug-22 14:38:37

(No, I didn't!)
