Newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetes

My Granddaughter was diagnosed type 1 at 4 years old.
It was scary and worrying for us all the first three months. However we all (parents/grandparents went to the local hospital where the Diabetes Nurse explained all to us, and gave us lots of leaflets. We have moved on from the time I used to carry kitchen scales in my handbag when we were out for lunch.!! She now has a pump which senses when she needs insulin. She is now 15, and its just part of her life now. Dont worry, your Granddaughter will soon get used to the regime.

My daughter was diagnosed at 8 years old also we had fantastic support from the Diabetic care team. She quickly adapted and became very confident in managing her own care. Things have advanced since then (she is now 34 ) with sensors that can monitor blood sugar levels if you are fortunate enough to get them from the NHS. There are also various delivery systems for insulin but my daughter has always favoured an ordinary insulin pen
It all seems strange and scary at the beginning but kids adapt quickly
It can be more difficult to manage if the child is ill for any reason but again this all comes with experience
Hypo’s can also be a new experience where their blood sugar drops too low we didn’t experience many of these but the parents will be taught what to do
Apart from having to keep an eye on sugar levels ect my daughter has had a complete normal life doing all the things that other children did

That must have been a shock. In time she and her family will learn how to keep the right balance between food and exercise. Monitoring of bloods etc is something that will become part of everyday routine. She will eventually know the warning signs of low glucose levels and how to deal with it. There is so much help available online now. Wishing you well. I've had it for 40 plus years.
