Run the dark part under the hot tap (as long as it can be wetted). This works every time for me on bottle tops.

Bigger than that and it’s the mole wrench (which might be how I have broken the small oven/grill knob on my cooker .

I have used a neighbour or a visiting workman too on occasion!! But honestly the rubber glove trick works every single time. Read about it on Which.

As I'm just 5'1, I quite often have to ask someone tall to reach something on the top supermarket shelf for me. They seem to be pleased to be asked, but nobody has ever taken me up on my offer to get things off the bottom shelf for them.
