Are you awake / hot? ?

I am.

My bedroom has returned to its sauna like temperatures, despite me having two fans facing me…

I’ve done Wordle, got the radio on and taken some painkillers in the hope that they might help matters.

I might have to get up and eat something…

Don't go to bed too early to make sure you are really tired ... Close all windows with sun on them , draw curtains / blinds .. start to open windows when it becomes cooler in the evening... sleep with just a sheet or nothing .. Last night really hot so I just had a thin cotton night dress no covers and I slept from 12 till 6am , when my alarm comes on as I start my pills then , I suffer from Polymyalgia for nearly a year now which is awful .... Fanny cornforth says she takes pain killers ,, Correct me if I am wrong , but I think they will make you hot ? I don't have a fan in my room , but I was comfortable .. But I do live in a brand new house which is very well insulated ... keeps the heat out in summer and in winter keeps the heat in !

I had to smile when I saw your picture! We don't have jackdaws but do have very noisy crows and they are really quite big.

I do have my window open at night but am a bit aware that something might fly in so I keep the blind closed.

It was difficult to fall asleep ? despite a fan on in this heat.

Then there was a terrific thunderstorm. Nature gave a wild performance of thunder and lightning ? effects. The fuses popped then the power went out completely - despite re-setting the main fuse. Trying to preserve the cold in the fridge, I filled up a hot water bottle with cold water and went back to bed. I had to close the shutters because the rain was coming in. A wee bit of airflow but not much.

DH woke later, and the power came back on. It was an electricity box that connects our house to the main public electricity that had gone down, but reset itself about 2 or 3 house later.

Nearly 100 lighting strikes recorded on our tiny weather station. Nature vented her spleen!

Loving the cool rain now, here in France. I hope it puts out some of the fires! ?

I was looking forward to a more comfortable night last night with a fan delivered from the "South American" place yesterday, but when I opened it up there was a crack in the casing and it has to go back, so spent another sticky night.

Too hot to sleep, I wet a bath towel, spin it to get most of the water out then put it over my naked body………., hope we don’t have burglars ??

In the day time I wet a tea towel then put in freezer. It’s lovely draped around your neck for a while ?

I sleep badly in the heat too. I found by closing my windows and drawing heavy curtains in my bedroom through the day helps. I don't use a fan as I find them really dehydrating but place bowls of ice near my bed, use natural bedding and fill my room with plants.

You are right about it being awful if you're not feeling 100 %. I am not feeling right at all and have to walk my dog every morning before it gets too hot, when all I want to do is stay in bed.
On the positive side, the washing is drying quickly and sitting in the sun for short periods of time bucks the spirits up.

Lolee Sun 14-Aug-22 12:07:34

Esmay

I'm going to try to sleep now.
I have prickly heat from trying to save my plants .
I've given up with jewellery-poor you MissA .

Rain might mean floods as the ground is like concrete and how many people have had their front gardens paved over ?

I've deliberately kept a a circular lawn and borders in my small front garden to compensate for the rear courtyard being fully paved (but full of large potted plants). Totally mindful that paved/concreted garden spaces aren't environmentally friendly.

There are some strict orthodox Jewish communities where all the women ( where all the women are menstruating together) go to live in a separate ( from their husbands) building.

grandMattie Sun 14-Aug-22 11:45:23

Both. My livingquarters and badroom face West...
I have a fan and a (hot) water bottle, frozen, which helps a tiny bit.
I try to keep shaded and to do as little as possible.
I hate this heat; I turn a fetching shade of beetroot and and extremely grumpy if too hot!

Georgesgran Sun 14-Aug-22 11:43:07

For some reason I’m warmer today than I have been all week.
I have jackdaws hammering at my windows, so I can barely open them and have to keep the blinds down, in case one decides to hop inside - awful things!

We aren't used to this much heat here in N.Ireland so it's knocked me for six and it's nowhere near what any of you Grans have had to deal with.
I took the dog out at 10.30pm and the moon was amazing, very orange. As soon as we stepped back into my bungalow the heat hit us. The dog lay at my bedroom doorway sharing my fan, still didn't have much sleep though.
Up at 6am and we set off for another walk along the seafront which had a wee bit of a breeze, it was lovely. Clouding over a bit now, weather warning for thunderstorms, looks like we are heading for a bit of respite.

I spent most of my life in South Africa and Zambia. Now in Scotland. When I feel uncomfortable with the heat I put a wet tea towel around my neck. This works for me.

Peaseblossom Sun 14-Aug-22 11:26:24

Esmay Yes, I was talking about that to my friend yesterday. The ground is so dry that it won’t absorb water properly, so flash flooding could be a big problem. As you say, so many people have paved their gardens for parking that there is no soil or grass to absorb it. If people do that they should have one of those drainage grids which run the width of the garden put in.

I have a Yangze fan which contains water to which I add fplastic containers of frozen water (included). It sends out lovely cold air and is really effective. I bought it a couple of years ago and have used it often. It is free standing on wheels and is very quiet, so can be left on whilst I sleep. It is available on Amazon..

SillyNanny321 Sun 14-Aug-22 11:24:40

Wish I could open windows all night but live in a bungalow & alone so will not risk it even though it is so hot even being near the sea! Also I have an indoor cat who needs special diet so she might get out an open window & get lost & I would never forgive myself if I lost her! So we put up with the heat & a noisy fan meaning not a lot of sleep for either the poor cat or me! Never mind it will soon be winter & we will be moaning about the cold. Never happy are we Lol!!

Theoddbird Sun 14-Aug-22 11:22:17

My boat is cool at night....bow and stern doors and all doors inbetween open sends a cool breeze all the way through at night.

pce612 Sun 14-Aug-22 11:19:16

Here on the Moray coast it is 14 degrees and misty, Thunder storms forecast for this afternoon,
I am so glad that I don't live further south.

Applegran Sun 14-Aug-22 11:18:45

I bought a fan and carry it around in the day to plug in wherever I am and have it on in the night - indoors is sometimes hotter than out of doors. I find the fan at night does the job - even though the bedroom temperature is 27º all night. If you haven't got a fan, its really worth considering - though I know some people are saying it doesn't help them, for me its enabling me to sleep. I feel for everyone who is struggling to sleep - and hope some people in that situation have seen shooting stars!

Nanna29 Sun 14-Aug-22 11:18:21

Hi I live in North East and has been very warm here. My daughter was telling me the other day that she wet a towel in cold water and put it over herself she said it did the trick and she slept. Also ive heard of people buying those cool mats for dogs they have been laying on them while in bed. I haven't tried either but I will if it gets to 30 at night I live on the coast and have never know temperatures like this

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod
BY EUGENE FIELD
Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night
Sailed off in a wooden shoe--
Sailed on a river of crystal light,
Into a sea of dew.
"Where are you going, and what do you wish?"
The old moon asked of the three.
"We have come to fish for the herring fish
That live in this beautiful sea;
Nets of silver and gold have we!"
Said Wynken,
Blynken,
And Nod.

The old moon laughed and sang a song,
As they rocked in the wooden shoe,
And the wind that sped them all night long
Ruffled the waves of dew.
The little stars were the herring fish
That lived in that beautiful sea--
"Now cast your nets wherever you wish--
Never afeard are we!"
So cried the stars to the fishermen three:
Wynken,
Blynken,
And Nod.

All night long their nets they threw
To the stars in the twinkling foam---
Then down from the skies came the wooden shoe,
Bringing the fishermen home;
'T was all so pretty a sail it seemed
As if it could not be,
And some folks thought 't was a dream they 'd dreamed
Of sailing that beautiful sea---
But I shall name you the fishermen three:
Wynken,
Blynken,
And Nod.

Wynken and Blynken are two little eyes,
And Nod is a little head,
And the wooden shoe that sailed the skies
Is a wee one's trundle-bed.
So shut your eyes while mother sings
Of wonderful sights that be,
And you shall see the beautiful things
As you rock in the misty sea,
Where the old shoe rocked the fishermen three:
Wynken,
Blynken,
And Nod

Sounds idyllic smile
Fingers crossed tonight may be the night that I go off to the land of winken, blinken, and nodd.

Gosh, I'm so lucky - absolutely nothing keeps me awake. Medication - wouldn't wish the need for that particular cocktail on anyone. Lovely to see the moon through the open windows last night, before I fell asleep. Awoke to a beautiful misty dawn.

MissAdventure Thu 11-Aug-22 18:19:01

I shall be checking out that meteor shower.
I love being outside in the night, gazing up at the sky. smile

I was up at 4 this morning, same as many and opened all the windows and doors all over. It did cool the house by a few degrees but it takes time.

I usually like going up to bed but not tonight, nor the next few nights. Pedestal fan is on for an hour or so and it helps a bit but I feel another long night coming on. The moon is at its fullest at 2.36am in the morning on friday but has its effects for a few days before and after

looking at the garden now, the green plants are gasping as transpiration is greater than root uptake. They will recover overnight. Animals birds plants, we are all suffering
