What comics did you read as a child?

Beano and later Jackie, but not often...maybe 3-4 a year until I got pocket money as a teenager

Robin, Girls Crystal, Schoolfriend, Bunty, Judy and Childrens Newspaper. Not all at the same time though!

We only ever had comics as a treat for the journey when we went on holiday, I preferred books anyway. As I got a little older I would spend some of my precious pocket money on a girly comic if it had a free gift of a ring or something or if it had a picture of Elvis in it.

My dad used to bring home the comics every week for us five children, the bunty , Judy,Mandy , beano, dandy my aunt used to have a chandlers in Liverpool and we have very fond memories sitting behind the counter by the very smelly calor gas heater reading all the marvel comics, superman the hulk

I would like to add that l have a collection of Beano and Dandy annuals for waiting brothers and sisters of music pupils. I also loved these as my brother had Dandy for a long time and often saw copies of Beano. They are as popular with modern children as they ever were with us, although the punishments are much tamer - no six of the best allowed in modern annuals. I do, though, have a Beano annual from 1979 complete with old fashioned retribution. This is the children’s favourite.

I had Schoolfriend and Girls Crystal and my sister had Girl.
My brother had The Eagle, and I would read that as well. Later I would buy, if I could get them in the front door without my mother seeing them romantic comics, one called Romeo. I cannot remember the name of any others.
My grandsons buy Beano I think. Similar, anyway.

Twinkle, then Bunty and then my teens were Jackie, Oh Boy and My Guy, I got the annuals every Christmas too. All the pictures of my favourite pop stars were ripped out of the comics and sellotaped to the horrible woodchip wallpaper on my bedroom wall.

I had Pippin r Jack and Jill when I was very small. As I grew older, I had Judy, Diana and then Jackie as a teenager.

I had School Friend and then Girls Crystal which was delivered with the newspapers. I wanted to change again to Girl which I thought was more modern, but wasn’t allowed to because I had inconvenienced the newsagent enough by changing to Girls Crystal!

One of them featured Terry Brent, Detective (can’t remember which one) which one week posed a question I still can’t fathom. When someone has been hurt and about to lose consciousness after an attack, why do they give an elaborate clue as to the perpetrator rather than just naming them. In this case the clue was Palindrome, which should have sent them seeking out “Anna” rather rushing to the nearest airport to search for a friend. It did serve a good purpose though as I never forgot what a palindrome was, and that was about 70 years ago. It’s amazing what comes back to you when reading Gransnet!

I started with Harold Hare - who could forget the stories about Walter Hottle Bottle !
Moved on to Bunty because I loved the cut out dolls and kept them for years.
Then Jackie followed by Fab 208.
I loved getting the comics delivered, I can remember the excitement each week when my comic appeared through the letterbox, and the huge disappointment if delivery was delayed.

Sunny Stories, Bunty, Jackie, Look and Learn

I remember reading Twinkle, Bunty, Beezer, Beano and Topper. No doubt there was more as I loved comics but those are the ones that come straight to mind

I started off with Robin & still have the first two annuals. Then Tiny Tots…Rainbow…Sunny Stories…Dandy…Beano…Beezer…Girl…School Friend & my Sisters Girls Crystal…Bunty…I borrowed our friends Eagle too.
As a teenager I had a magazine with pop stars in it…can’t remember the name..!so I had plenty of Beatles & Paul Macartney posters in my bedroom!

My sister and I had quite a few comics, think we used to swap them with friends. Bunty and Judy, yes the four Marys and the cut out dolls! There was a Lady Penelope comic and one called Treasure? a younger version of Look and Learn, then graduated onto Jackie which I hid under my bed!!

Robin first, then there was another one that I can't remember, think it began with a P, there was always a story about a fairy on the front cover...
Moved on to Look and Learn (boring) till I finally got to Bunty. My pal got Judy, and we used to save up all our copies of each comic and then swap over huge bundles in each school holiday. I remember the luxury of being able to go straight to the next week's story after some cliffhanger in Wee Slavey! I loved Sandra of the Secret Ballet, and one about a horsey girl, can't remember what it was called? Moved on to June and School Friend (incorporating Girls' Crystal?) Then came DIANA, with gorgeous free gifts, especially The Crystal Ring, which I kept for many years. There was also one called Princess, but the stories were dull. Eventually, I was allowed to have Jackie, though the slapper girls at school had been reading it for years. Then there was Petticoat magazine.

Twinkle ar first. But then Bunty which I adored. I think it was the highlight of my week for a while. It was delivered on Saturday mornings and I took it to read in bed snd jusf devoured it! I kept them for years until they mysteriously disappeared!

Out of my weekly pocket money I bought Bunty and Jackie and every Christmas looked forward getting the Annuals which I wish I had kept.

Another thumbs up for Sunny Stories. Couldn't wait for Thursdays to come around and I was even allowed to collect it on my way home from school.

I can remember being unable to sleep with excitement the night before Bunty or Judy were due to be delivered with a free gift: most remembered favourite gifts were a daisy bracelet and a 'diamond' ring!

Bunty, Judy, Diana, Jackie. Eagle, Rover, Hotspur (dad's!) and his Commandos too (I still have those). I remember getting a photo published in Diana (I think) of my pony.
