Is this a thing now in impoverished Britain

I’m sitting on my patio just thinking about how dull the slabs are.
The Times has come to my rescue. Outdoor rugs!! Who knew they were a thing? The one I like is only £640.78. I don’t think it’s big enough though, I’ll have to have 2.

I don't think people should be judged on what they spend their money on, but I do think what is available to buy should have more restrictions on. An example is the plastic egg in the Kinder eggs...how much rubbish like that is made that has no real use? Rugs for outside? Made of plastic? Plastic ivy? We've managed for thousands of years without them, should we be making them now when we are all trying to cut down on plastic?

I beg to differ on that GrannyGravy13.

I noticed a stack of them in the plant section in Tesco yesterday. Large size approx 8x6ft. They were reduced to £20 but I didn’t see any takers.

People shouldn't need crumbs from the tables of those who get a feel good buzz from charitable works, donations and philanthropy.

Neither should folks be judged on how they spend their money …

If we were all the same and cared for each other the world would not be a boring bland dreary place.

All being different does not mean that we do not care for others.

I am and I imagine lots of posters on GN do not feel the need to tell all of their charitable works/ donations /philanthropy.

nell unless you have a very small patio it may cost lots of £££.?

Nell8 Fri 12-Aug-22 18:22:01

Thank you for the info, PamelaJ1 Our patio had to be repointed and cleaned. Unfortunately the smooth surface has been left like coarse sandpaper, which isn't great for bare feet of any age. I'll see if I can track down an outdoor mat to make life more pleasant. ?

Do other people live in gardens where birds don’t poo? On everything! Especially pigeons….

We're all entitled to our views GrannyGravy13.
I like nice things too.
But I believe it's wrong to spend an obscene amount on anything. And no one will persuade me otherwise.

I did not say that you were not entitled to your view nadateturbe

We are all different, like different things, spend on different commodities.

If we were all the same the world would be a very boring, bland and dreary place.

Nothing wrong with treating oneself Monica, within reason.
I would have more pleasure in helping someone than spending that kind of money on possessions.
Having some money in the bank is sensible if possible. Having billions is not.

That is your choice nadateturb

Others get pleasure from having nice things around them, that is their choice.

Neither are wrong, just different.

As for what is in anyones bank account that is their business.

Since we are not all on exactly the same income some people will be able to afford optional luxuries that others cannot.

The same person who indulges in such 'luxuries' may also be a generous donor to their local food bank and work hardin other ways to reduce inequalities in society. Outdoor rugs are truly a dispensible luxury, no one is going to die or even become ill if they do not have one, so why shouldn't those who want and can afford them, not have them without other people being outraged?

As your comment came immediately after mine, it might be me who inspired you to use the word “outraged”. I am not (outraged) and sadly the use of that emotive word seems to have sparked other comments (including your own quote in a later post “the censorious who choose to make value judgments on others”) that have somewhat soured what began as an interesting discussion.
I had never heard about such mats before and was interested to read about them. It is also interesting to read about other people’s take on this. We can all learn from each other, ideally without making those “judgments on others”.

I bought one from Wayfair a couple of years ago. It is about 10' x 6' and was about £120.

We have an large-ish outdoor table and chairs under a covered patio. It has brick paving - which I hate - so I bought it to go under the table and chairs to brighten it up a bit. It is blue and white. It looks lovely.

No-one has tripped over it and you can scrub with a brush or use a hosepipe (when we don't have a ban) it as it is some kind of polypropylene material. We leave it out all year round as it is partly under cover and we don't get much frost anyway. I don't think I would leave one out in the open all year round though.

I appreciate that there is a cost of living crisis but surely posters are allowed to post about something other than that without being shot down in flames.

Not many billionaires have billions in the bank. Bloomberg, Bezos maybe.
The vast majority of them have their money tied up in finance.
The only problem with that, is, it could very easily go tits up.

Thought I’d send a photo

Perhaps my eyesight’s going, but none of those cost £640?

Sorry Shirley, cut the top off.

Phew! I can cancel the cataract op!

That’s a ludicrous price?

I am fascinated by the outdoor sofas .... they must cost a fortune and will start to go mouldy very quickly.

Outdoor rugs on offer for £12 this morning in Tesco. I think the normal price was £15.
