Elvis died 45 years ago today…

Didn't like him then, still don't like him now.

Elvis was of my time, and I saw plenty of his movies. Never liked him very much. He took all kinds of drugs, and died of an overdose/heart attack.

I was a HUGE fan as a teenager at the time and a member of the fan club. So I was terribly upset and crying. My Aunty rang up to commiserate. Heard some of his songs while travelling last night. So sad to lose him and his beautiful voice.

He was exploited by all who managed him. Contract fir him to appear ever night for 5 years at the International Las Vegas. He was fed "uppers" to keep him going then "downers" so he could sleep. Col. Tom manipulated Elvis to his last minute. Sure nowadays Col. woukd be jailed for abuse.

Sadly, this still happens today with some stars. Of course, the drugs are "prescribed" but they still get addicted. Drugs are absolutely rife in the music industry. I wanted my son to enjoy a musical career but after he took a music course, it was clear that drugs were part and parcel. The lecturers were openly smoking dope and talking about their drug use in front of the students when they were on tour. I was so relieved when his girlfriend wanted him to move away from that sort of career.

Remember it well- it was A level results day for me and we found out that night he had passed away?

Now we are talking sexy, handsome and everything that goes with it. Lovely voice and brilliant mover. I loved him. Saw Jailhouse Rock at 16 and have loved him ever since. Love to dance to everyone of his songs.

I remember the day in 1967 when Elvis got married.I was a student midwife working night duty on a post natal ward.I came on duty to find one of the mothers crying her eyes out.I thought it was the post birth blues but no, as she told me between her sobs, Elvis has got married !.

The film 'ELVIS' is out now. It's brilliant, go and see it.

I've seen several programmes on Elvis where the Memphis Mafia (his close group of friends) spoke about how the Colonel forced him on stage when he was exhausted and unwell. The Colonel wanted the golden goose to keep laying those eggs in order to feed his gambling habit. While Elvis was performing he was down in the casino losing thousands. So tragic. I don't use the word 'hate' very often but I really hate that man.

I had to laugh when I saw the character Elvis in Fireman Sam who was exactly like him! That joke was lost on the little children but the adults watching would have all laughed.

He was around years before Cliff and tons better

So, only 5 years to go until they open the sealed records about his death. Could be interesting or not.

i remember getting ready for secondary school and hearing dave lee travis on radio one start to talk and he sounded as if he was very emotional and he told us that elvis had died, i was not a big fan back then but in later years i just felt that it was such a sad and lonely way to die.

Icanhandthemback I did watch the film and in some ways I felt sad at someone else singing instead of him
I think he was totally exploited and I believe he had a heart as good as his voice (but I do think he couldn’t resist all the women who adored him)
He was a total one off no one has ever come up to him beautiful man beautiful voice miss him a lot and so sad for how his last few years must have been

Bluebelle, the actor who played Elvis only sang during the first part of the film and I thought he did it brilliantly. When the film got to the Vegas years they dubbed in Elvis’ own voice as it was too mature by then for the actor to copy it accurately. I watched the interview with the actor where he explained it all.

I remember where I was when I heard about Elvis. Looking forward to seeing the new film, reviews are very good.

I adored Elvis from the age of twelve when he first burst upon the scene with Heartbreak Hotel. I loved everything he did until he came back from the army and that rogue Parker wanted to present him as the clean cut boy instead of the slightly dangerous image he had before. He made a stream of awful films, then was stuck on the Vegas treadmill until it killed him. Yes, his lifestyle was unhealthy and he was pumped full of prescription drugs to keep him performing. I think the theory if the faulty gene is also a factor.
I too cried when he died because although I no longer liked his music so much I still adored Elvis. He was, as others have said a beautiful looking man.

Dickens The jury is still out on the cause of Elvis's death (see earlier posts). Drugs and bad diet certainly contributed along with abuse from his manager, but there may also have been a defective gene passed down from his mother (who died at 46 years). A perfect storm of sickness.

I thought his untimely death was due to substance abuse.

... and his - allegedly - appalling diet.

He suffered (again, allegedly) from serious constipation, which does correspond with such a diet.

But that kind of foodstuff is very addictive. I was never a great fan (each to her own), but he should have had a dietician among his staff. His weight gain would indicate that he was simply eating too much of the wrong food. You can get away with it when you are young, but not indefinitely.

A sad - and unnecessarily early - death.

I've loved Elvis since my teens when I first saw him in the movie 'Follow that Dream'. My friends and I must have watched it at least half a dozen times!

Nobody comes close to his talent and he was one of the most good-looking men ever.

Such a tragedy that he died so young.

It is always sad when a young person dies.

Personally, I never understood why Elvis was so popular. I liked n either his music nor his looks, and even as a teenager I found the pop-idol cult annoying.

As a teen, Elvis was my hero. He was so good looking and he had an incredible voice.

He still inspires magic all these years later.
