I’ve just watched another garden programme, lovely garden but where have all the washing lines/whirlygigs gone? Why, do people not hang washing out any more?

MerylStreep Mon 22-Aug-22 17:27:56

Because most of us have these now ?

I have my washing line, I wouldn’t be without it…

dragonfly46 Mon 22-Aug-22 17:31:04

Despite being very expensive they are tumble drying.

dragonfly46 Mon 22-Aug-22 17:31:25

I have a whirly gig.

FlexibleFriend Mon 22-Aug-22 17:36:58

I have a tumble dryer which I use routinely because my garden attracts a lot of birds which kept crapping on my washing and after they'd been at next doors brambles it was impossible to remove the staining.

I wouldn’t be without my whirligig

Kate1949 Mon 22-Aug-22 17:42:42

We have a whirlygig. My sister has a retractable one. They are very neat.

HeavenLeigh Mon 22-Aug-22 17:51:03

I’m not a fan of whirligigs I have a very long washing line love my washing to get a good airing spaced out on the line, I agree the whirlies might look neater but it’s not about neatness for me love my washing to get a good flap about when there’s strong winds

Some newer neighbourhoods do not allow them, because they are unsightly. Our condo (which we have rented out) does not allow any laundry hanging on balconies or patios.

Also a lot of the younger generation have never put out laundry to dry, for either time or convenience reasons.

Retractable line here, but also a ‘whirligig” if I’ve got lots of washing.

Casdon Mon 22-Aug-22 18:16:34

I assumed that they just took the whirligig out of its hole and put it in the shed when they filmed the ‘after’ pictures in the garden makeover programmes - that’s what I do if I have visitors coming and we will be outside.

My daughter told me that her neighbour (middle aged woman) told her that for the first time in her life she was using ‘nature’s tumble dryer’!

BigBertha1 Mon 22-Aug-22 22:10:38

Whittling here too but tumble dry the towels.

Despite being very expensive they are tumble drying.

They might change their minds before too long!

Hanging washing oom the line outside is the only household chore I quite enjoy !

What I would like to see is some of the gardens five years on to see how the designs have stood up to real life including less than committed gardeners. Wish the programme makers would do some follow ups.

Would not be without my whirly. Does you good to see washing blowing in the breeze all neat and tidy. Instructed my husband how to hang out the clothes after having my family and working during the day. The answer I got was "Is someone coming to take a photo of it". Enough said.

A long unobstructed washing line over a path down a lawn, that would be perfection but many cannot achieve that, including me. A large unobstructed whirly is what I have, the largest one, brabantia 60m liftomatic in a 50mm concreted tube. I wanted stability and space for everything in one fill with gaps between things. It works perfectly and is something I managed to install by myself, using all sorts of bracing and a vertical spirit level

My neighbour last house had a brabania wall mounted airer that pulled out from the wall, it did not hold much

re garden rescue, they do use a lot of wood in contact with soil, give that wood 7-8 years and there would be signs of rot. They tend to do nice jobs with patio areas but rolled gravel, not so good. I expect it is down to available money for materials

My amazing old whirlygig is still going strong. I love to see my undies flying around on it.

Wheniwasyourage Tue 23-Aug-22 09:35:19

Another vote for a whirly here. I really cannot understand places where you aren't allowed to hang out your washing. Quite apart from the environmental costs of tumble dryers, what on earth is offensive about clean washing? We all have it! ? ? ? ?

When I was five, my parents tried to enter me to the direct grant school which had accepted my sister.

I failed the oral as I had been unable to tell from the coloured picture they showed me that the day of the week in the picture was Monday because it showed washing billowing on a clothes line. (I still remember the picture and the shocked tut tutting) As we lived in a flat in the heart of sooty London at the time (am talking around 1950), I had never SEEN washing hanging on a line! My mother had to take all our stuff to the local laundry....

Washing hanging out to dry is aesthetically pleasing. The trouble is aesthetic opinions differ.
