Drawer of Last Resort - What's in Yours?

I was looking for an AA battery yesterday and Mr M said I should check the Man Drawer dumping ground/emergency tidy up/ repository of lost and odd bits drawer in the kitchen.

I found, amongst the superglue, tape measures and random screws , some odd Ikea fastenings, a pack of playing cards, the missing dogs collar, two extra strong mints (with delicious fluff!), rubber bands, a stone with a hole in it, gift tags, a Fire TV stick, several buttons, a photo of a nephew taken years ago....and a baby tooth!

What's in your drawer of last resort?

I’ve never had the room to keep anything unused or unnecessary so I’m very organised and know where everything is. I have a stationery drawer, a batteries, candles and matches drawer, a basket for dog stuff and another for dusters etc. I’m tidy and methodical.
And even so I sometimes lose things!

Food banks take unopened make up and toiletries to give to those in most need/ going for interviews etc

I wouldn’t know where to start. All sorts, inc. several of those ‘bits’ of things, when I haven’t a clue if they’ll eventually be needed for something, or if they can be chucked. There used to be sundry batteries chucked in but these are now in a tin labelled ‘Batteries’. Ditto several of those tiny screwdrivers you sometimes get in Christmas crackers. We do occasionally need those so I’m quite pleased with myself that they’re now in a labelled tin. Especially since I would never describe myself as a super-tidy, organised type. ?

It’s an ice scraper for the sides of the freezer

I think we all have a drawer like that!

Spare phone charger, computer mice, mousemat, USB cables, reading glasses, pens, rubbers, stapler. staples, 2 camera, camera batteries, memory cards, post it notes, nail files, paper clips, memory card readers, magnifying glass, scissors etc.

And thats just the one in my office!

Last seen disappearing over the hill and far away, alongside my watering can!

Has anyone found my apple corer please?

Grandyma Fri 02-Sept-22 23:06:54

Can’t be bothered to get up and look but from memory:- Tweezers, small screw drivers, ball of string, set of alan keys, radiator key, plant labels, fuses, scissors, multi tool, odd pegs, birthday cake candles/holders, insulating tape, sticky dots, self adhesive hooks, plastic coated wire, odd knitting needles, garden snips etc.

Mine includes batteries, mini screwdrivers, sellotape, brown parcel tape, bin liners, cookie cutters, graters, cake decorations, including the ballet dancers that were used on daughters’ birthday cakes 40-50 years ago and odds and ends that are a mystery. Being a hoarder, I have a large bag of paper bags and an equally large bag of plastic bags. Best of all, there’s my chocolate stash! That’s just the one in the kitchen - there are others!

After living somewhere for over 35 years we seem to have many of these drawers !

My DH has many odd things in his! Chocolate wrappers, random lids, paper clips and all manner of things !

Mine has “spare” things, like charging cables, old keys, hair clips and again all manner of random things !

Lexisgranny is it a fridge/freezer scraper? Its hard to tell how big it is from the picture.

Thankyou everyone for your lists, they caused much laughter and shared with others. Did us all GOOD!!

Musicgirl Fri 02-Sept-22 15:39:48

I forgot the torch!

I’m glad it’s not just our house that has a drawer of shame. I think for those of us who were in the guides, it comes under the guise of Be Prepared. In the pocket of our blouses, we had to have a notebook, pencil, handkerchief, plaster, 2p for a public phone and a safety pin. As pre-pubescent girls, we had one side of our chests that was 32AA and the other side 32GG!

rowyn Fri 02-Sept-22 14:17:29

Simple.... it's jammed with all the usual and useful bits and pieces that I've forgotten I have and so never look for.

Oh and the bits that aren't useful but which I put in the drawer in case they ever became so.

I love a “messy drawer” mines in the kitchen, it’s full of all sorts of stuff, batteries, old keys, receipts, sellotape, I could go on! The best is the roll of cling film which is stuck to the bottom of the drawer because the superglue leaked, I’ve cut most of the cling film off but there is a lovely lump of it left!!

Coco51 Fri 02-Sept-22 13:28:08

I remember someone posting a lanelled tin “Pieces of string too short to be useful” (a hoarder after my own heart!)

Clare58 Fri 02-Sept-22 13:24:23

That was my first thought!

Noreen3 Fri 02-Sept-22 13:24:05

I have the same objects that other people have mentioned.I have one of those organisers with little compartments, but it's not very good.I'm going to get a cutlery tray,as mentioned by calendargirl.

HazelGreen Fri 02-Sept-22 13:15:51

Lexisgranny yes a freezer tool. Scraper one end and the handle bit with foldup side sections makes a 'shute' for the water to drain neatly from bottom of compartment in to some shallow bowl.

dalrymple23 Fri 02-Sept-22 13:11:22

It is for de-icing the deep freeze!! I have several.

LadyGracie Fri 02-Sept-22 13:07:33

I'd need a weekend to list the contents of 3 drawers, 2 plastic boxes and a cupboard. My bedside drawers are also as bad, full of 'stuff'.

Greyduster Fri 02-Sept-22 13:00:46

The last time I looked there was a glue stick, an ammonite from a beach in Dorset, a jewellers loupe, a stapler, two defunct mobile phones, a map distance marker, some bits of Lego, Allen keys, a wooden dragon whose tail is waiting to be reattached, a plastic bag full of miscellaneous stationery items and a box of ibuprofen. The drawer next door to it is even worse than that!

Growing0ldDisgracefully Fri 02-Sept-22 12:56:55

Ah, the Black Hole drawer, or the Graveyard drawer, wherein things go to await the end of eternity or to be lost forever.
Yes, got one of them full of long disused tat, (sorry, things my husband says we should keep) but daren't throw any of it away in case he decides he needs it the day after disposal, and also a vegetable rack tucked away in a rarely visited corner, full of stuff too big to cram in the aforesaid Black Hole.
