Practical ways to show respect for the Queen

Looking at the flowers outside Buckingham palace I remembered the ones left for Diana and the problems they posed in the end. I suppose it's a reflex to want to bring flowers but I wonder if there are other ways to show respect.
Remembering the Queen's green canopy project might it be good to plant a tree for her? Perhaps to reflect her service, do something practical like litter picking in a local park or beauty spot? There are people needing help in all sorts of ways all over the country.
Any ideas for alternative ways to express our sorrow at Her passing and our appreciation of Her life's work?

she loved horses and her daughter is the president of the riding for the disabled association which is generally desperate for volunteers and money

What a God idea, Aveline

Here's a link:

You don't have to physically plant a tree if you're not able, a donation can be made for a tree to be gifted to communities across the country.

The National Trust also has a tree planting scheme:

Good idea!

I’ve 3 Diana, Princess of Wales white rose bushes my DF bought me in ‘97 - the profit went to one of her charities. What a good idea about a tree. In our old house, we had a bed of Queen Elizabeth roses, a lovely pink and no thorns.

We planted a tree for her platinum jubilee and I must say I feel strangely comforted as I look at it. Silly I know but I suppose it's a lasting memorial.
Riding/horse charities a good idea.
I feel I want to do something!

All the flowers upset me as they just pile up with all that plastic, and no one will enjoy them as flowers. I'd rather take them in her honour to a Care Home or other public place.

But planting a tree is a wonderful idea. I will do just that. Thanks.

I agree that a donation to someone like The Woodland Trust would be more useful than the heaps of flowers wrapped in cellophane which will end up in landfill. I am not criticising those who feel the need to take flowers, although I don't have that urge myself, but I can't help thinking there are more useful and appropriate ways of showing one's sadness at the passing of the Queen.

That’s a wonderful idea Aveline, we have more trees in our garden than we can cope with but will happily donate to the Woodland Trust in memory of HM Queen Elizabeth II

Yes the waste of plastic wrapped probably from countries far away so upsets me too. I will donate to planting a tree in the late autumn to replace so many newly planted trees that have been lost this summer .

We bought a Rowan sapling from The Woodland Trust two years ago as part of the tree planting incentive. It is growing beautifully and we think we will buy another indigenous tree in remembrance of the Queen.

Aveline

Remembering the Queen's green canopy project might it be good to plant a tree for her?

I think that's a marvellous idea. Trees are forever! And they benefit everyone.

I can't think of anything more fitting in her honour. Even as a Republican.

... a surge of tree-planting brought about by her death. It might even go down in the annals of history if the movement is big enough.

I think we're all very glad that we planted ours in our shared garden back at the Jubilee in June. I'm encouraging the GSs to plant one too and their parents are keen too.

I like the idea of planting a tree, or donating to a suitable tree organisation. What a lovely suggestion, Aveline

I hate the way people just leave bunches of flowers to commemorate anyone, the side of road when there has been a fatality and as someone said outside the palace to mark the Queens passing. They turn brown and die and look terrible in a matter of days plus they are wasteful , why does it make people feel better ?
The endless sentimentality on TV and Radio with also people phoning in to say " they seen the Queen in 1969 when opened their local leisure centre " it like they are saying my sighting was better than yours because she waved out of the car window at me!! I liked and respected the Queen BUT I won't be buying flowers or signing the book of condolence .

loopyloo Fri 09-Sept-22 17:57:12

Thought the same, and think a donation to the Trussell Trust would be better.

Fleurpepper Fri 09-Sept-22 18:05:19

Totally agree 62Granny- all that plastic and waste.

I shall plant a tree and also a Rose Queen Elisabeth.

Fabulous idea and you can also donate £10 to plant a tree in memoriam. The tv programme HM the Queen made with David Attenborough about this project for her Jubilee Year explains the plan. It would be a brilliant idea to give to something only started in March and about which she was so passionate.
