My daughter-in-law’s waters broke last night and she’s been having contractions, on and off, all day. We’re taking care of the dog, the other grandparents have our granddaughter…..and we’re all on tenterhooks hoping that baby puts in an appearance overnight.

It’s been a difficult year with many family members having serious health issues, so we’re all looking forward to the joy that a new baby brings.

Is anyone else in line to be a granny before the year’s end? This little chap will be my tenth.

Hope all goes well

My DiL is due on October 8th. First baby for her and my son. They know its a boy but DiL lost her dad early June from Covid, after having overcome leukaemia last year so a very bittersweet time for them

When I worked in clinical practice, I did some obstetrical nursing. (I worked in a Canadian rural hospital where maternity was just part of acute care.) I always told the mothers that if they felt they needed to have a bowel movement, they needed to let me know right away as I had to check. It could be the baby, and we would prefer not to be fishing babies out of loos grin

Congratulations GA. All’s well that ends well. A bouncing baby boy! ??
My DD wasn’t believed either and gave birth to her first baby on the floor in the reception office minutes after arriving in the hospital while the midwife shouted like a banshee for assistance. Shouldn’t be happening in this day & age.

grannyactivist, congratulations, how lovely. It nearly was a bouncing baby boy!

We nearly lost our daughter when the hospital wouldn't listen that she was bleeding heavily even though they knew the placenta was low. It beggars belief sometimes.

So pleased for you all with a happy outcome, and your granddaughter is at a lovely age to be a super big sister ?

Why is it so hard to get medics to believe that sometimes the patient knows best!

So glad there was a happy ending.

Just back from squishing my new grandson (and his very happy big sister) at the hospital and hearing the tale of baby’s birth. ?

Due to a miscommunication the hospital staff didn’t believe my daughter-in-law was in established labour when she arrived at the hospital so she was shown to a ward. She explained that she was having strong, regular contractions and they knew her waters had broken 26 hours previously, so to avoid introducing infection they didn’t give her an internal exam.

Shortly after arriving on the ward she went to the loo and when she didn’t reappear after a few minutes my son went to check on her and heard sounds to indicate she was giving birth behind the locked door. Nobody responded to the emergency bell so he went and literally grabbed a passing midwife - who reassured him that his wife wasn’t yet at a stage to be giving birth, then promptly changed her tune and unlocked the door just in time to catch the baby as he was born!

Big sister proudly introduced him to us and revealed his name, which I’m happy to say we love. He’s a gorgeous nine pound bundle of love. ?

Great news, grannyactivist. As Melanie says in Gone With the Wind, the best days are when babies come.
