My daughter is a vegetarian ... when she was about 7 years old ... ask me if pigs laid bacon ... had to tell her the truth ... vegetarian ever since ... I also say it is part of growing up when children ask questions ... she also said ... mommy in the olden days was the world in black & white, as she saw black & white films ... no doubt you all have your memories too

I was once asked why Mary was on a donkey when they had payed their taxis at Bethlehem.

Oh how wonderful!

While putting up a nativity scene one year, I was asked by the only Muslim child in the class, whether the angel in the Christian Bible is called Gloria?

A reasonable question, as the angel he was holding in his hand at that moment was carrying the inscription: "Gloria in excelsis Deo"

Keeping as straight a face as I could, I replied that the angel who spoke to the shepherds in the Christian Bible and to the Virgin Mary before that is called Gabriel and is the same angel as the one he knows as Ji'bril, but that for some odd reason makers of nativity scenes still print this sentence in Latin, and that it means "Glory to God in the highest"

After that when putting up our own nativity scene at home, DH and I will happily ask the other, "Could you pass me Gloria, please?"

DGD2, who is very clever and insightful, though VERY Dyslexic, comes away with extraordinary things. Aged 7 She explained to me why she is good at maths, art and her piano lessons but struggles with any writing or reading. Her explanation was that " Numbers always denote the same thing e,g, 4 always means 4 things; Music is written sensibly - high notes are at the top of the stave and lower notes further down. Longer notes have bigger dots and short ones have small dots. But letters and words do not sound the same all the time and she instanced Bough, Bow - Bow which can also sound as Bo to rhyme with So but Sew sounds the same although it has an E in the middle.

She is now at high school and has been told that her subject choices for next year must include a foreign language. While DGD2's spoken French is amazing thanks to her other GPs (both retired language teachers) and her Dad's habit of having only 'French (or Spanish or German) allowed' mealtimes, or half days. She has also easily learned the basics of BSL as although it has grammar, no spelling is required and there are different signs for words that sound the same e,g, Bear & Bare. Herself (and her parents) are currently presenting a case to the school for BSL as her 'other' language as she realises that written course work in another language is only going to add to her confusion re spelling.

Sometimes the young ones can clearly see and propose alternatives to things that adults take for granted.

One of the children I used to teach couldn’t wait to tell me what they had learned about Vikings. “Mrs S, Did you know that the Vikings had live cows on their ships for their milk. And when they stopped laying the milk, they ate the cows for meat!”

I only work in old time. How many Peppa Pigs are there in a Andy Pandy episode ?

pandapatch Mon 19-Sept-22 22:39:19

PS we now measure in Peppa Pigs regardless of whether our grandson is here!!

pandapatch Mon 19-Sept-22 22:38:00

4 year old grandson in car "How long till we get to my house?"
Me "about half an hour"
Grandson "you have to say episodes"
Me "episodes?????"
Grandson (with loud sigh) "I don't know hours - you have to tell me in Peppa Pigs"

someone who referred to pages of bread, was scoffed at by her sister for such nomenclature.
both grown ups.
i explained to the sister, but you see cynthia loves reading so much, she sees everything in terms of books.
i said with a straight face.
made it up on the spot.
but at least it made bossy sister stop; wondering when her sister had started being a book lover.

I asked my younger grandson recently what he wanted in the picnic and he said ‘a random picnic’. So from then on we call picnics ‘random’.

My GD told me my lipstick was walking down my face I just couldn't get her to understand why we say running.

My daughter and I said exactly the same thing on the day of the Queen's death. It's impossible (for us anyway!) to hear King Charles without adding spaniel!

I'm struggling with saying King Charles without adding the word "spaniel"...

Priceless. Surely it should be Queen Victoria Sponge though?!

I’m having a glass of wine. Just copying the parents ??

crazyH Sun 18-Sept-22 22:28:45

That’s so cute ?

Witzend Sun 18-Sept-22 22:25:51

Love it!

One of Gdd1’s I loved, was at nursery when she was only 2 1/2. She was busy in the play kitchen, and staff asked what she was doing.
‘I’m having a glass of wine.’ ?

DGD aged 4, was solemnly explaining the platinum jubilee.
"There is another princess too who had a long reign" who was that?
"She's called Princess Victoria sponge" smile
