Watching the funeral procession

Just thinking, people all over the world are watching this at the same time. A rare event. . Many of us here in Australia are watching, certainly.

fairfraise Halfway through the lowering process they cut to a lone piper piping a lament in a side aisle and we watched as he slowly processed down the side aisle and round a corner, the sound getting fainter and fainter as he moved into the distance.

When the cameras returned to the main chapel the coffin had completed its descent and was no more in sight. Perhaps you conflated the two events.

fairfraise Mon 19-Sept-22 20:25:02

Callistemon it certainly is impressive. I thought the whole thing, the aerial views of inside the Abbey and the aerial views of London and the Chapel was just wonderful. Apparently the Maori King was invited but I saw no mention of him, or did I miss that as well?

One thing puzzles me. Front page of online DT says the coffin was lowered into the Royal Vault. Yet I thought I saw it being carried out of the Chapel into a side corridor. Am I right or wrong?

It was lowered, we saw it start to be lowered but not what happened in the end. Presumably it is moved to one side in the vault and the floor rises again.
An impressive bit of engineering.

It was the same at Prince Philip's funeral.

I thought it was rather poignant that Charles seemed to be in the same seat his mother sat in all alone, at that funeral

doesn't bother me what it's called.

It might bother countries that were formerly part of the Empire.

And give the anti-monarchists something more to moan about.

So relieved to be back on Gransnet. Just been over on Mumsnet and can’t believe the rubbish I have been reading. It seems there are posters there who are only concerned about making the funeral a sexist issue. Also apparently it is too military !!!!Another who thought the Queen should be put in the ground without the processions passing certain places of significance. Another saw Princess Anne’s position with her siblings as a sexist stance. I suppose they are younger than us but they left me gobsmacked with their ignorance.

Is it ignorance? Or is it just time moving forward? Perhaps they would view some of our views as ignorance.

I do hope that Charles isn’t crowned with the Imperial State Crown

I thought that St Edward’s Crown is the one used for the actual crowning of the monarch, but is exchanged for the Imperial State Crown, it being lighter?

They are both magnificent.

The Queen was the only living person to have worn that crown, when she was alive.

fairfraise Mon 19-Sept-22 19:56:07

I see. I must have looked down at that point!

Blossoming Mon 19-Sept-22 19:52:23

It was lowered through the floor, it was shown starting to be lowered and then it cut away to the piper.

I didn't see it either ... as was lowered when the lone piper was playing ... unless we both missed it ,but I am sure we didn't miss it

Such a fine display including all aspects of Queen Elizabeth's life.
Ì feel so proud to be British today.
The RF have shown such love, thought and respect.Prince George and Princess Charlotte did so well, their parents must feel so proud.
Tears on and off during whole ceremony but the arrival at Windsor with staff, corgis, pony, removal of crown and fading piper left me drained emotionally. Well done to all our servicemen for such a precise and dignified display

MrsKen33 Mon 19-Sept-22 19:02:48

Wonderful from start to finish. The drum beat, the pipers and I thing those young men who carried the coffin did sterling work. I bet their mothers were proud.

fairfraise Mon 19-Sept-22 18:59:35

I just checked. It was lowered, somehow, but I must have missed it.

Just to say Prince George & Princess Charlotte were a credit to their parents ! Everyone did remarkably well, the pall bearers did exceptionally well ... their shoulders & backs ,bless them ... I did wonder when I saw the corgis also Emma the Queens horse if they knew & sensed something ... when my husband passed away at his funeral my dog & daughters dog knew , the way they reacted , so I wonder ...

M0nica Mon 19-Sept-22 18:21:31

You can change the name of a crown - anyway there is quite a number to choose from.

SueDonim Mon 19-Sept-22 18:20:01

Yes, I was shocked at that, Maisie. In my ignorance, I didn’t realise that that was how it was defined.

I feel wrung-out, too. Removing the Crown Jewels from the Queen’s coffin undid me. It seemed a final acknowledgement that the Elizabethan age has passed and it also rendered the Queen an ordinary mortal, just like you and me.

I’ve got a headache now.

It struck me as I watched that, I do hope that Charles isn't crowned with the Imperial state crown. We don't have an Empire now, we did when the Queen was crowned. It would seem so very out of touch and tactless.

NotTooOld Mon 19-Sept-22 18:15:15

It was magnificent. Well done to all concerned but - just one thing - could you not have arranged a slope up to St George's chapel? Those steps must have been a nightmare for the poor bearers.

Yes, this morning's ceremony and pageantry was awe-inspiring, but this afternoon's ceremony was so moving and so personal.

Washerwoman

Her head groom waiting with her pony Emma had me weeping. In fact the final service at Windsor was beautiful and very moving

I didn't watch the whole thing, but popped through from the kitchen in between jam making sessions and switched the tv on to see the groom with Emma, and then her Corgis. That did it for me...

What’s Apping my Italian friend and I said how bagpipes affected me , she felt the same and suggested it may be because they can sound like a human voice.

Chestnut Mon 19-Sept-22 17:48:52

I'm another who doesn't normally like bagpipes, but they were just perfect. They had a doleful, mournful sound which was very moving and tugged at the heartstrings. ?
