I’ve been waiting for years for this news but finally it’s in, my eldest is expecting a new baby in the new year.
My eldest was born in ‘82 so you can imagine I’d almost given up hope of any but surrogate grandchildren coming my way.
I’m allowed to choose what to be called as it’s the first but I’m happy to go with whatever (within reason). In my head I’m crying with joy “I’m going to be a granny” so probably should be that ?‍♀️

Congrats!
I am a Grandma. I had a Nanan and a Grandma. My children called my mum Nana.
It is whatever feels comfortable for you…. It might even change as a grandchild’s way of pronouncing may morph into a unique family name.

There is absolutely nothing like it - what joy you have to come! Many congratulations. xx

My daughter inlaw was 36 when she had my second granddaughter her first child and so was my son who was born in 85. I remember when my son said going to have a baby with my first granddaughter she is nearly 12 now then 10 weeks later my youngest said his wife was pregnant lol I got a double shock lol excitement. Congrats to your family. I’ve now got 4 plus a step grandchild

Such wonderful news from dogsmother, and such a sad post from CathSoc62. Gransnet is full of the ups and downs of life.

If first became a Grandma when I was 60. My adopted DD's two are 23 and 20.
My Aussie-living DD had a donor egg daughter when she was almost 44, and my Aussie-living DS became a dad when he was 40. The GC are now 5 and 2. Amusingly, my 2 yo GS is the only blood relation to me, out of my 4 GC, but they are all dearly loved.
I'm sure that you will love being a Gran, and you're so lucky to have then living nearby. I hope that everything goes well.

My daughter’s 36 1/2 with a failed marriage and umpteen other failed ‘ relationships ‘ so as I’m nearly 70 and dying of cancer, I’ve given up hope of ever seeing a grandchild. Good luck to you and I hope your daughter has an easy pregnancy !

Treetops05 Sun 09-Oct-22 13:31:32

It is the most overpowering feeling I've ever known, congratulations xx

Congratulations dogsmother that’s wonderful news ?. It’s lovely being a granny. My little granddaughter is 4 and I babysat for her last weekend. She wanted me to hold her hand whilst she fell asleep ?. It was such a beautiful close time together. Love her so much ❤️

mrsgreenfingers56 Sun 09-Oct-22 13:13:13

Such lovely and welcome news for you and congratulations.

I have always liked Grandma myself and that is what I called my Grandmothers, never liked Nanny, Nanna or Granny. But at the end of the day what does it matter when you have such wonderful news!

SylviaPlathssister Sun 09-Oct-22 13:08:50

Just a word of warning, as it’s your DIL not DD who is having the baby. Listen to what she has to say. Don’t rush round or make demands. It’s her first baby and so she maybe will want the pleasure of choosing things for it.
Luckily for me my first grandchild was born to a daughter so she was able to tell me to back off. Looking back I was entirely over the top as I fell in love ( still am) with the little scrap.
I would have moved in with them if I could. Now I have loads of them the novelty has worn off..
DONT criticise or give the new parents any advice. Be very careful even if it’s asked for. Keep absolutely stum.
It’s the ‘best’ having grandchildren but you need to be careful.

Warmest Congratulations!! flowers
Our first grandchild was born when I was 57, and now there are 10 of them! You've been warned!
I hope everything goes well. Look forward to the happy times ahead for all of you.

Congratulations dogsmother. wonderful news. I know just how you feel, I thought I was going to have to be content with two granddads and two grand cats!! Then my DD2 made the announcement when I was 68! He is now nearly 9 a loveable little monkey who has Down syndrome. ThenDD1 got married and she had to have IVF and gave me a lovely DGD! I feel so blessed and love them both

Larsonsmum Sun 09-Oct-22 12:43:14

Congratulations!! I am a recent Granny too - we have a 13 month old Grandson. Granny was what I called my late Grandmothers. Likewise, our daughter called both her late Grandmothers Granny too.

Only thing I would add, is that I merchandised greetings cards for 11/12 years, and Granny cards are few and far between in most card shops/supermarkets. There are far more Grandmother, Grandma, Nana, Nanny, Nan etc, etc.

I still chose to be Granny, despite that, and sounds like you will do too!!

Spec1alk Sun 09-Oct-22 12:40:43

So you’re a granny to be!! How exciting!! Congratulations. Do you knit??

Gundy Sun 09-Oct-22 12:34:25

Congratulations! You’ll be in heaven with first and all grandchildren. What a blessing. We use Nana and Papa in our family.
Cheers!

Best ‘job’ I’ve ever had!
Thought I’d be Glam-Ma but it wasn’t to be GC has made up mind on our names and we love them, fortunately!

Chocolatelovinggran Sun 09-Oct-22 12:28:20

Congratulations to new grandparents and grandparents in waiting. IVF was the miracle/ stork that brought two of my lovely GC, too, and I am forever grateful to Mr Winston and Mr Steptoe. Hellsbelles, I am Mormor to my Norwegian GC, which is Mum's Mum. I think that one of our regular posters is Farmor, which is Dad's Mum. Very logical, those Scandinavians.

ParlorGames Sun 09-Oct-22 12:24:11

What fabulous news! you must be delighted! I have four GC and each one is amazing and funny and kind and brilliant.......I will shut up now! sorry!
Wishing the mum-to-be a healthy pregnancy.

rowyn Sun 09-Oct-22 12:23:04

It's lovely to hear some good news for a change!
So, Dogsmother, surely the obvious name for you is "WOOF!"

Grandma70s Sun 09-Oct-22 12:17:57

To me a nanny is a nursemaid, or even a female goat! It is never used to mean grandmother in our family. I had a granny and a grandma, and now I am a Grandma. The other one is Granny. My children called my mother Grandmother in full, as she wished. They were very close.

sarahcyn Sun 09-Oct-22 12:10:57

Many congratulations!
I don’t know if I’m allowed to mention it here - mods please delete this if you wish - but I’m a doula and I do an online workshop for grandparents to be who want to get up to speed, refresh their wisdom especially if they haven’t been near a newborn for 30-40 years. Google The Baby Experience Grantenatal Workshop.

Peaseblossom Sun 09-Oct-22 12:02:19

Congratulations. I’m sure you are so excited the same as me when I became a grandmother. I’m called nanny which is what I prefer, as I think granny or grandma sounds ancient!

albertina Sun 09-Oct-22 11:55:42

How lovely ! Congratulations and welcome to (in my opinion) the best club in the world.

Applegran Sun 09-Oct-22 11:55:13

Congratulations! Being a grandmother is wonderful! I hope all goes well with the pregnancy and birth and that you have a lovely healthy grandbaby!

Mallin Sun 09-Oct-22 11:50:25

Anything except Nanny. Nanny’s get paid. I am Grandma to my grandchildren and much to my amusement, Grandmama, to my great grandchildren. The explanation being the double ma at end. ( ! )
