Grany

Is it time now for a grown up discussion about monarchy, our democracy?

Monarchy Republic

Nick Wall - Why it's time to abolish the Monarchy.

It absolutely is time, although the media will have the country in a royal frenzy.

Theoddbird Sat 08-Oct-22 16:20:27

bettyboo22 are you aware that the source of what you say is an American gossip magazine called Globe. It is similar to National Enquirer. It is full of absolute rubbish. What they write about the royal family is beyond belief....

volver Sat 08-Oct-22 16:17:30

And that will help the disadvantaged and homeless how?

Anything he does within or for his own family, or to cement the future of the RF, its quite understandable that he would want to do that, but it doesn't help "his" people, as far as I can see?

I perhaps misunderstood your post at 15:33, I thought you were saying that he would act accordingly after seeing what is happening in the UK at the moment, in order to make things better.

Joseanne Sat 08-Oct-22 16:11:33

That's a difficult question for me to answer volver.
I'm just hoping that he will get on with things quickly, modernise, be innovative and have a long term vision with William's turn especially in mind. And there comes a bit of a crunch in that he will want to provide residences for his grandchildren x 3, or maybe even x 5, in the future so won't be keen to give up too much! Or maybe he will tell the lot of them to fend for themselves. Tricky.

Some of the invintees are heads of state, no choice .

volver Sat 08-Oct-22 15:40:20

Unless Charles 111 is very stupid I am sure he has gauged the situation and will be acting accordingly.

What do you think he'll do to help Joseanne? You know, this chap with the population's goodwill and a role in the government of this country?

Oddly, as I have always been an anti-monarchist, I'm hoping the King will temper the current race to the bottom by the Truss led government which cares nothing for the environment or the future of the planet...

We can but pray Jess

Joseanne Sat 08-Oct-22 15:33:41

I find it strange when people say monarchists aren't aware of foodbanks or sleeping on the street, and that they don't care. Even the King is aware what is going on, and both his sons and wives have gone to see for themselves and help out with organisations that provide support. Unless Charles 111 is very stupid I am sure he has gauged the situation and will be acting accordingly. No one goes around with their eyes closed.
Personally I could do without all the carriage procession for the coronation, and all the invitees bobbing about. Just get on with the serious Abbey job, (and the music!)

Enid book the rooms now ?

Anniebach Sat 08-Oct-22 15:04:17

Ireland doesn’t have food banks or homeless ?

and their president was chairman of the Labour Party, he resigned after
being elected president , obviously he is above politics!

Oopsadaisy1 Sat 08-Oct-22 14:57:16

Saggy do you think becoming a republic would mean food banks would be able to close and people would no longer live on the streets?
It would be a wonderful world if that were true.

Blossoming Sat 08-Oct-22 14:51:40

Scandinavia is not a country.

volver Sat 08-Oct-22 14:34:04

All these negative comments about our CONSTITUTIONAL monarchy, without which we would have a republic!

What you seem to consider anathema actually sounds like a really positive thing to many of us Amalegra.

Or a figurehead President only, as in Ireland, where the real power is the Prime Minister (like now)? Or a Head of State who is obliged to uphold the constitution and act if the government is overstepping its powers? Do you not think that would be helpful sometimes?

It’s no coincidence that the most stable countries (Scandinavia, Belgium, The Netherlands) are constitutional monarchies. Finland? Iceland? Switzerland? Switzerland's quite stable.

Do you really care about these people anymore…do you actually know there are people living on the streets, and more and more food banks! Isn’t it time you monarchists saw the ‘bigger picture’
Bowing and curtsying to people no better than you! You’ll be pulling your forelock’s soon! Weird or what!

That's quite offensive, saggi

All these negative comments about our CONSTITUTIONAL monarchy, without which we would have a republic! Then we would have to decide what kind of set up we want. A hands on President like the estimable Mr Trump, propped up by money and warring factions? Or a figurehead President only, as in Ireland, where the real power is the Prime Minister (like now)? And just think of the fun and games of actually ELECTING said functionaries! Money (lots of it needed to actually win!). Backstabbing, dirty tricks just like in the General and leadership elections! Corruption and double dealing all along the way! On second thoughts, I think the present monarchical system is the best of a bad bunch. It’s no coincidence that the most stable countries ( Scandinavia, Belgium, The Netherlands) are constitutional monarchies. Perhaps they’ll let us into their secrets so that ours can perform a little better,as time goes on, in these tumultuous days!

Golden Orb? Surely Golden Balls.

4allweknow Sat 08-Oct-22 13:45:28

June is not half term for all in the UK.

grandtanteJE65 Sat 08-Oct-22 13:34:08

I am a royalist, but I honestly think it is time to drop the whole idea of a coronation service.

All other royal houses except Japan did so a century or two ago.

If tradition wins and King Charles III is crowned, I hope he puts the welfare of his people first, and scales down the event to not too many billions of pounds.

It is surely in the worst of bad taste to use indecently large sums of money when people are literally starving in the country or unable to keep warm.

bettyboo22 Sat 08-Oct-22 13:27:11

I’ve heard he has a bad heart Charles , and any time he could die he has swollen fingers and they said he’s not got long and so william next we shall see though

Theoddbird Sat 08-Oct-22 13:27:00

I will wait for the official announcement. I never listen to 'leaks'....

NoddingGanGan Sat 08-Oct-22 13:24:56

I'm on the side of @Grany though I can't listen to that podcast, the guy's voice makes my teeth itch and it's far too long!

Mollygo Sat 08-Oct-22 12:46:49

Sorry, it should have started “of course I care, and I do what I can re food banks etc.”

No I don’t, but I don’t hold them responsible for the food banks and the people living on the streets any more than I hold people with second homes and frequent holidays, or people who spend vast sums on football match or concert tickets responsible.
Or do you think republicans don’t do that?
