Good evening all
I hope this message finds you all in good sprit?

I have a question:

I have recently been told i have the start of osteoporosis. This was found after breaking my leg at the gym.
To improve this, i've been advised to take vitamin D everyday.

I have also been given,
Zoledronic Acid in form of a dip.
Here is my question
Has anyone had this?
If so, have you had any side effects?
If yes, what are they?

Thank you in advance for reading this message and hopefully answering any of the above question

Thanks Farmor. It's reassuring though this time I looked at the list of possible side effects and my teeth are still chattering!

Farmor15 Sun 09-Oct-22 13:01:19

Dollygloss - denosumab is a completely different medication to Alendronic acid so shouldn't have same side effects. Though of course it may have other ones! I'm waiting to have another Dexa scan to see how my bones are doing- family history of osteoporosis so I'll do whatever needed to prevent it.

Dollygloss Sun 09-Oct-22 11:32:39

I was taking Aldedronic acid for five weeks and developed a skin rash, worse in places exposed to UV light like my ankles. I still have the problem. I was prescribed denosumab injections instead like Luckygirl but I haven't had the courage to start them yet though I realise the alternative is serious as I have osteoporosis in my hip.

when I had a stress fracture of my spine three and a half years back, my medical notes were changed to show that I had Osteoporosis. Never had a Dexa scan. When I asked for one of these as I was not really sure this was a proper way to make a diagnosis I was told, buy two different GP's that when someone in their late 70's suffers this sort of fracture they MUST have Osteoporosis.

Since then have taken Aldedronic Acid tablet weekly (no side effects whatsoever), and they upped my prescription Adcal D3 tab to be taken twice a day. Recent check up with nurse was told I should take the Alendronic Acid tabs for five years before review and she has made a note in my medical notes toto this effect.

Luckygirl3 Sun 09-Oct-22 09:04:16

I have a 6 monthly denosumab injection and take calcium and vit D tabs from the doc. But overall the service is hopeless as I do not get regular Dexa scans and have no idea whether the stuff is working.

I have been passed over to "shared care" so the GP nurse does the jabs now.

I take Accrete D3 prescribed by doctor after breaking my wrist and being diagnosed with osteopenia.

Charleygirl5 Sun 09-Oct-22 07:57:28

Thanks, my memory is going. It is ADCAL D3 that I take. After I broke my ankle my count was around 12 whereas it should be closer to 75 so taking the tablets I had to be extra careful for around 9 months.

Because of my Macular problems, I am only supposed to sit in the sun for around 15 minutes x3 a week.

EvieJ it may be easier to cancel this old age nonsense!

VitD is either D2 or D3. Vitamin D3 is thought to be more effective, but it's from an animal source, so vegans should opt for D2. When I had a deficiency and asked my GP, she told me to get D3, but it didn't make much difference.

BlueBelle Sun 09-Oct-22 05:48:33

So they call vitD ….. Vitamin D2 in that article growstuff oh dear why do they complicate it so much I’ve never seen D2 on the shelves before

I ve never been told to Vit D as my blood tests show my levels are good (I do spend a lot of time in the sun whenever it’s around) but I just take it during the autumn/ winter
I ve just had my bloods taken so it ll be interesting to see how it is (if they tell me)

Hellogirl1 Sat 08-Oct-22 23:19:33

I was found to have osteoporosis after breaking my back over 2 years ago. I take Alendronic acid tablets, just one per week.

BlueBelle

I was never told anything about the dental thing until I read about it on here a while back and queried it was told to just tell the dentist if you need treatment
I have had plenty of checkups since I started the infusion 5 years ago and never had any worries
Is there difference between VitD and D3 ? I ve taken both depending on which I pick up at the shop
I don’t even feel fluy after the infusion
Sorry I didn’t think about the dip and drip I thought it was a new way of taking it ???

Difference between VitB2 and VitB3 from Lloyds Pharmacy:

LOUISA1523 Sat 08-Oct-22 21:20:14

Osteonecrosis

LOUISA1523 Sat 08-Oct-22 21:19:39

I have 6 monthly zolendronic infusions....v small ( but still possibles)risk of jaw osteoporosis.....so I make sure to have 6 monthly dental checks ......get a bit fluey after but ok really.....I am prescribed daily adcal ( vit d 3 and calcium) ....my bloods are taken 6 monthly...always been in normal limits to date....just make sure you don't neglect your dental hygiene and see your dentist 6 monthly

dragonfly46 Sat 08-Oct-22 21:17:13

You are right Zolendronic Acid can cause jaw bone necrosis but it is very rare and generally happens after an extraction. It is worth getting your teeth checked out.

I take tablets daily but have had no adverse effects.

SueDonim Sat 08-Oct-22 21:17:07

Hello Evie. I’ve had a different type of medication - alendronate tablets and calcium + VitD tablets - for osteopenia. The only side effect I had was indigestion, which you won’t get with a drip.

Regarding the teeth/jaw issue, my experienced dentist said she has never seen a case in all her years of practise. I also had an implant done almost three years ago and there are warnings about possible effects with those too. However, it was all seamless, I had no problems and again the orthodontist said he’s never seen a case of complications from bone-strengthening medications.

I hope this is reassuring for you.

Charleygirl5 Sat 08-Oct-22 21:13:03

My GP prescribes mine but not every GP will do so. Why not have a chat with your local pharmacist or even google it first so that you have some knowledge.

Thank you Farmor15

I meant drip, It last for a year then a review.
I guess my concern is, i've read you can have problems with your teeth, (my own) Also, could get serve jaw issues.
I had the drip 6 weeks ago , so little worried about side effect.

Thank you for all the replies
Eve

In 2009 I dislocated and broke my ankle and I was told I had osteopenia. It is one down from osteoporosis if you understand.

I hope you are not taking it D on its own, it should be Vit D3. I am sorry I do not know about Zolendronic acid as I have as yet never needed it.

Good luck

EvieJ Sat 08-Oct-22 20:56:13

Thank you Blue belle

Good to hear no side effect and that it has worked for you

smile

EvieJ Sat 08-Oct-22 20:53:08

I agree , need to find the right site

Thank you

Farmor15 Sat 08-Oct-22 20:48:32

I wonder does EvieJ mean that the Zoledronic acid is given through a drip, which would be similar to infusion mentioned by BlueBelle-? I didn’t know what a dip was either, but then realised OP might have meant to type drip.

BlueBelle Sat 08-Oct-22 20:36:03

I am told I have osteoporosis although I ve never broken anything since I was a young person (and I have had a few falls) but I have lost some height I was put straight on an annual zoledronic infusion which I had for three years then was told my bone density had increased by 9% just had two years rest now start the next three year cycle next week
I ve never heard of dips
I ve had no side effects at all from the infusion
