Think we might be coming near to the time when DH may need some help. He has mobility issues, stairs (we have 10) are getting harder. He says he doesn't want a stair lift (nor do I particularly as I'm sure it would take up a lot of room), Recliner chair would help with getting up and out of the chair and if he did have a bad night he could probably sleep in it as a one off.

Has anybody bought from HSL and were happy with the chair or is there another company you might recommend more. I was also looking at sofa beds but they are quite low and he would have difficulty getting out of them.

Any advice gratefully received.

Try Careco - big range of all items that can assist with mobility problems. They do a very large range of chairs, some with one motor, some with two - and I purchased a wonderful one with four motors. The extra two giving control for my lumbar region and my neck.

Large showroom and helpful staff

My inlaws were the same as you, not wanting any aids in the house etc. But the last couple of months my fil, has just turned 93 and has started falling etc. They had no choice in the end but to get a chair to assist him with rising etc and a stairlift, they both rave about it now . Take the plunge , it Will make your life easier

DH had one from Oak Tree Mobility which was very helpful except that he never mastered the (simple) controls and I had therefore to be there. It was made for him (6ft 4in with very long legs) so no point in keeping it for me. I gave it to the nursing home which cared for him in his final weeks.

I have an arm chair from HSL and am delighted with it though suspect I could have paid less by shopping around.

Whichever chair you buy make sure it has two motors, one for the legs and one to recline the back. I do think it’s a case of swings and roundabouts otherwise.

Modern stairlifts do not take up much room.

I had to get a second hand riser/recliner in a bit of a hurry as I could not get in and out of bed after an operation. Mine is good but you cannot recline the back without first the leg bit rising. I would like to be able to recline it a bit without my legs being lifted ... it is very slow getting up when someone rings the doorbell!

I do not know if some recliners have that option, but it might be something to look out for.

Ah ... maybe that is the two motors that midgey is talking about.

That’s exactly it Luckygirl.

Yes, two motors which allow the back to recline without legs raising, or legs raising, etc without back reclining,.

Be wary of those sellers who bring a chair for you to try out at home. THe chairs are fine, but they cost a very large amount more than those where you go to a shop to purchase.

When I went to Careco showroom they had a number of single motor chairs, a number of double motor chairs, and then a few of the four motor chairs (which I went for). The motor for the lumbar region means that I need no further cushions to get comfortable, and the fourth one (for the neck area), gives me total comfortable support there.

Yes, it was pricey - most of it paid for by my AC as an 80th birthday pressie. Each chair is made individually to sort your own measurements, and there is a good range of materials.

We had to get a riser recliner for my MIL before she could come home from hospital and we were very lucky because we found an HSL dual motor one on Facebook Marketplace. It had been bought for the seller's aunt, but she died after only sitting in it twice. It was like brand new - we got it for £300, and the same model was on the HSL website for almost £2000. It's ideal for her needs.

You can’t go wrong with HSL. My MiL loved hers. She has a two seat sofa, one riser recliner and one chair. After she passed away we sold it on eBay. You may well find one on there at a reduced price.

I had mine from HSL some time ago and had no problems. Just make sure your doors are wide enough to get one through and let hubby be measured for one, because of the height of his legs from the knee, when sitting.
