I think that I'm officially dowdy!

Watched a TV program yesterday and one of the characters was an older, down trodden lady. Guess what? I actually own two of the outfits she was wearing. One had been teamed with a sage green cardi, I hadn't thought of it, looked quite good so I'm in the lookout for one to complete the look! There's me thinking I'm on trendgrin

I do need to find an equivalent of the white trainers for winter tho. I have neat black trainers but they aren't quite the same as the summer equivalent.
Not quite a doc Martin person so this needs some thought...

There are some quite neat boots around, Wyllow - like these ones in Seasalt - not as clumpy at Doc Martens - that look good with midi dresses

I don't actually think that I am dowdy, it's that the costume department of the TV program do. Think Seasalt, Poetry, Landsend. I don't really do bright colours though!

I aim for clean and tidy = anything else is a bonus.

We often stop off at the supermarket on the way back from our smallholding ( think feeding animals and birds, gardening etc ) and I'm always in muddy, scruffy old clothes, the women on the tills must think, if they notice, that I don't have any decent clothes. Sometimes feel that I ought to explain why I'm dressed like that. Talking of shopping trolleys, I use mine a lot and don't care what people think, I'm 72 and need it. And yes, I wear flowery dresses and white trainers sometimes, why not ?!

Missingmoominmama Thu 27-Oct-22 15:20:34

My 35 yr old son told me I was too old to wear cardigans ironically.

I told him I don’t really care! grin

Marilla - I have that busty problem too. So easy to look on the frumpy side with it! ?

I have a wedding to go to and recently tried on some fabulous dresses from Bombshell - they all fitted really well but... my enormous bosom gringringrin

Another one discovering the excellent fashion idea of white trainers with summer wear (no sock please except those liner socks) I wear trainers 99% of the time (more or less always have, tho have some nice summer sandals for "best")and my feet are happy look good feet for my age.

In fact, the clincher was my DGD age 6 for first time commenting on my wear. "that's neat! ( current compliment?) when she saw the Adidos tennis type trainers.

I'm pretty much a trousers and jumpers and jersey tops person - but they are pretty and often bold colours.

No offence beige person but - NO!

I know it "goes" with everything but.....

I think the shopping trolleys in the picture are fab. I don't need them yet, but, wow way to go!

MerylStreep Thu 27-Oct-22 14:35:59

doesnt matter what I wear as it’s only DH who sees me
How sad ?

I am glad now the children have left home I can wear what I want. Some days I wear black trousers and a dark coat. That is when I mean business!
Other days I wear a gold coat and have leopard print boots and hand bag! I feel great, playful and not dowdy. I enjoy colour therapy and wearing pinks, greens and blues.
When it is heavy rain I have a waxed dark green jacket.
A while back I caught my reflection in a shop window and realised I was stooping. Now I straighten up and walk confidently. I would hope that everyone wears what they like and not worry about other people. After all the young women wear such close fitting leggings and tops they show every lump and bump!! Not a good look!! LOL I remind my OH to take his blood pressure pills!!! smile

rowyn Thu 27-Oct-22 14:10:06

PS and I've just discovered that the elastic in my trousers is not as elastic as it should be - now that's something that I will have to rectify!!

rowyn Thu 27-Oct-22 14:07:51

I'm sitting here, in my sage green cardigan, Daisy Mae, and will concede that I might look dowdy, but will most certainly not equate that with being downtrodden.

I really don't care what others think of my appearance, as long as I haven't put something on inside out, or not fastened my buttons properly. At my age, I want comfortable!

Happysexagenarian Thu 27-Oct-22 13:47:58

Just realised how negative my response sounds, just having a bad day today.

Happysexagenarian Thu 27-Oct-22 13:47:04

These days I barely have the energy to get dressed at all let alone co-ordinate my wardrobe!

I like colourful clothes but I have never followed fashion, I just wear what appeals to me and what I'm comfortable in. Usually that's trousers and loose longline tops. As I rarely go out it really doesn't matter what I wear as it's only DH that sees me. I'm definitely dowdy probably even scruffy. I really don't care.

greenlady102 Thu 27-Oct-22 13:34:49

I think that I officially dont give a flying fig

fluttERBY123 Thu 27-Oct-22 13:34:06

Quote from somewhere. "She's rich enough to be dowdy." She doesn't need to prove anything

nipsmum Thu 27-Oct-22 13:10:22

I don't care either way . At my age I am comfortable in what I wear. After wearing uniform all my working life, I wear what I like and to hell with what people think of the way I look. No one has ever commented to my face that I look dowdy or anything else, not even my daughters

Amalegra Thu 27-Oct-22 13:10:06

I wear pretty much what I’ve always worn and if people don’t like it, fine by me! Don’t do the low necklines, really bodycon dresses now but I love my skinny jeans/ t shirts, etc. I do follow fashion but only if I like it and I think it suits me. Too high a heel is out unless a special occasion though! I think some of the fashion touted these days is in fact VERY dowdy and I wouldn’t be seen dead in it!

Saggi Thu 27-Oct-22 12:47:15

Calf -length dresses with white trainers…. I love it also ….it is fashion. The fashion now…..would not be without a pair of spotless white trainers.

lizzypopbottle Thu 27-Oct-22 12:47:05

I gave up wearing trainers, many years ago, when I had Achilles tendon problems. The back of the shoe aggravated them. I know there are low rise trainers available these days, arch support, anti-pronating, negative heel etc. etc. but I don't miss trainers, or the cost of them. Except in winter, I wear Sainsbury's little, navy blue, lace up pumps at £9 a pair, with an arch support because they are absolutely flat. My feet are beginning to feel the cold now.

I was brought up to regard white shoes, especially Minnie Mouse stilettos, as 'common'. My mother could be pretty bigoted about a lot of things (was your mother like that, LRavenscroft?), also including obvious eye liner ("face like two burnt holes in a blanket"), large buttocks in tight trousers ("like two boys fighting in a sack") and she would comment quite audibly which was embarrassing for anyone walking with her. I was also brought up to regard small feet as feminine. So I can't get past the look of clompy, white trainers on anyone, whatever their age. I can't help it, they just look ugly to my ingrained, mother led prejudices... but good luck to anyone who wears them. In the words of Mama Cass (Cass Elliot) "Make your own kind of music. Sing your own special song, even if nobody else sings along." (Paloma Faith made a great, up beat cover that plays in my car!)

Actually, my feet are not particularly large at UK size 5/5.5 and I was trying to sell several pairs of barely/unworn shoes at a car boot sale. All the women who walked by had feet much too big to consider my cast off shoes. Women's feet have been liberated!

Dartmoorgal Thu 27-Oct-22 12:46:32

I only discovered this look this summer- I think I look fabulous in my pretty Seasalt flowy frocks and my Superga gold trainers plus a pink M and S denim jacket. You should try it. Trendy and comfy!

Dartmoorgal Thu 27-Oct-22 12:44:02

I only disciver

Daisydaisydaisy Thu 27-Oct-22 12:39:23

One woman's dowdy is another woman's understated; don't you think? I like to wear subdued, pastel shades, rather than bright colours or big patterns. But then, I'm bound to look dowdy in my beige cardi, aren't I?
