I gave up wearing trainers, many years ago, when I had Achilles tendon problems. The back of the shoe aggravated them. I know there are low rise trainers available these days, arch support, anti-pronating, negative heel etc. etc. but I don't miss trainers, or the cost of them. Except in winter, I wear Sainsbury's little, navy blue, lace up pumps at £9 a pair, with an arch support because they are absolutely flat. My feet are beginning to feel the cold now.
I was brought up to regard white shoes, especially Minnie Mouse stilettos, as 'common'. My mother could be pretty bigoted about a lot of things (was your mother like that, LRavenscroft?), also including obvious eye liner ("face like two burnt holes in a blanket"), large buttocks in tight trousers ("like two boys fighting in a sack") and she would comment quite audibly which was embarrassing for anyone walking with her. I was also brought up to regard small feet as feminine. So I can't get past the look of clompy, white trainers on anyone, whatever their age. I can't help it, they just look ugly to my ingrained, mother led prejudices... but good luck to anyone who wears them. In the words of Mama Cass (Cass Elliot) "Make your own kind of music. Sing your own special song, even if nobody else sings along." (Paloma Faith made a great, up beat cover that plays in my car!)
Actually, my feet are not particularly large at UK size 5/5.5 and I was trying to sell several pairs of barely/unworn shoes at a car boot sale. All the women who walked by had feet much too big to consider my cast off shoes. Women's feet have been liberated!
