I think that I'm officially dowdy!

I like to feel comfortable, and welcome the long dresses and trainers style. A shopping trolley is so much more practical (especially French chic) than carrying heavy shopping bags around. I do make an effort when going out, although I’m far happier in my gardening clothes or dog walking gear!

Shopping trolleys could probably do with a makeover which includes adding some sort of motorised assistance, like e bikes, for those of us with a bad back.

I hardly ever look in the mirror so I was quite surprised recently to see a photo of a white haired woman in an off white raincoat planting an apple tree. It was on Facebook and must have been me because I recognised the tree! grin

My elegant French friend told me that in France lots of young women use shopping trolleys. We're not dowdy Esmay, we're the height of French chic.

I'm a scruffy old bag. I don't go quite as far as my mother in law, and go out without brushing my hair. But if I'm tidy, that's all I'm really worried about. I can smarten up if I want to, the need for it these days is rare.

Here's my reaction -my body , my choice and my money - so I don't give a damn anymore !

Yuss!

I still find it quite hard to understand how much younger women wear very flowing, floral dresses with white trainers as part of a high fashion statement in summer/autumn.

I like it. I think it's a statement of f*ck stupid shoes in which I can't walk ten miles. Go them, I say!

I think that once you get to a certain age -you can't win either you are dowdy /dress like Miss Marple or you look ridiculous -mutton dressed as lamb according to friends and relatives .

Here's my reaction -my body , my choice and my money - so I don't give a damn anymore !

One of my friends made fun of my shopping trolley .
So I ditched using it for a day .
I was in agony from lugging my heavy shopping and ended up looking like Quasimodo for a week !
So that the last time that I'm listening to her !

There's a commercial here that shows a waiting room full of women with short grey hair, loose trousers and cardigans, reading magazines. A new woman sits, has a look around and jumps up and leaves... Sorry I can't remember what the commercial was for(vitamins?) but I remember sympathizing with her!

I do my best, but I am definitely a short grey haired cardigan wearer! Saying that, today my beige cardi has neon yellow cuffs, I have on jeans and thick soled black and white Vans trainers. Rebelling in my own small way!

Being a dowdy old woman has one advantage: it's better than being a dowdy young woman, of which there are plenty.

BlueBelle Tue 25-Oct-22 15:43:17

No never dowdy a little bit the opposite I like fairly loud different type of stuff bit hippy bit bohemian bit normal

Daisymae Tue 25-Oct-22 14:32:49

Couldn't even point out my now televised outfits to my DH as he was asleep!

Yammy Tue 25-Oct-22 14:26:06

I've stopped worrying. My DDs tell me when I look a bit dowdy, buy me makeup that they think I will suit and make suggestions to brighten an outfit up. One has accused me of wearing too many ditsy things that look like grans curtains were, so now more stripes and dots and what are the shops full of ditsy tops and dresses?
I got over my problem with thin high-heeled shoes by buying a pair with an ankle strap, the pair before that was for my wedding.
They also told me to get my pepper and salt hair cropped, it worked in the hairdressers but on a bad morning Oh boy I look as if I have had a nightmare.
To top it all DH doesn't notice.hmm

Farzanah Tue 25-Oct-22 14:05:17

??? For dowdy old women.

Theexwife Tue 25-Oct-22 14:03:02

I have gone out thinking I look ok, or even quite good, however when photos have been taken of the event I look like a dowdy old lady.

I now take a photo of myself instead of looking in the mirror when trying on clothes for an event, there is a real difference.

Daisymae Tue 25-Oct-22 13:56:12

Watched a TV program yesterday and one of the characters was an older, down trodden lady. Guess what? I actually own two of the outfits she was wearing. One had been teamed with a sage green cardi, I hadn't thought of it, looked quite good so I'm in the lookout for one to complete the look! There's me thinking I'm on trendgrin
