I am not interested in politics ...

so many say this, and I am sorry to say, mainly women. But what does it mean? Don't politicise a thread, many say. This is not a political thread, they say again.

If you are not interested in politics, it must mean you are not interested in

NHS/healthcare
price and availaibility of vaccines, medicines, etc
social care
education
our country's stability and future
environment
transport
energy supplies
prices in general

and so so much more.

Which is just unbelievable, to be honest.

What does it mean when someone shouts 'this is not a political thread'?

Surely if 'politics' have a huge influence on the subject, then mentionning this is fair and actually, important.

Not talking here about 'Party' politics at all- but all life realities which flow from political decisions. All the ones in my list do, directly.

And if anyone can see any shouting at anyone in the above thread ie loads of capital letters, then I'll eat my Fat Controller's- hat.

I am surprised that you find people not interested in politics, Fleurpepper. Perhaps it is the way you raise the subject?

Since I retired I have canvassed quite regularly on local and political issues, and I am always astonished at how extraordinarily polite the vast majority of people are to a stranger on their doorstep asking their opinions. Only one man refused to answer, saying he had no interest at all in politics, (it was about the local library) and one other man said he wouldn't even use the leaflet I was delivering for wiping his bottom; he was a little disconcerted when I burst out laughing.

Well unless you want to control how people respond then yes it should be in my view Callistemon. People are free to say well this is what happens if you dont want to nationalise the railways for example in the same way people are free to respond with I am not interested in politics. There are some threads where I think there are some unspoken rules of politeness, for example I wouldnt pop on to the estrangement threads and talk about the price of butter, but I think those kind of 'protected' threads are rare.

Thank you Joseanne. I'll take a look.

DaisyAnne Fri 28-Oct-22 16:26:29

Doesn't "I'm not interested in politics" simply mean "I don't want to talk about politics with you".

Nothing wrong with that. Why should anyone have to have a conversation they don't want to have? Isn't that why "Chat" is sign-posted in that way, flagging it is a politics-free zone?

Joseanne Fri 28-Oct-22 16:29:40

Just like people who haven't got a rescue dog can't be free to respond on a thread about acquiring a new pet then? It works both ways if we want to start talking about all the threads on the board, even the non political ones. Posters can't be controlled in what they wish to say just because you disagree.

Precisely my understanding.

I don’t see those who have an active interest in politics restricted to the “crap lifers”.
I think it’s healthy to participate in political issues, but in a respectful manner and with an open mind, you can always learn things. I believe politics is about aiming to help those who really do have a crap life.

Galaxy Fri 28-Oct-22 16:34:11

Sorry Joseanne I am not sure if you were agreeing with me or not theregrin.

Galaxy Fri 28-Oct-22 16:35:24

I dont want any control of speech (within the law) is what I was trying to say.

MerylStreep Fri 28-Oct-22 16:41:31

I love politics. Just not Gransnet politics. ?

Cherrytree59 Fri 28-Oct-22 17:00:59

Having been jumped on when I first joined GN circa 2015 and only stayed with GN because of another kind poster coming to my aid, I have avoided The Political threads

That does not mean that a do not care about politics or the Country I live in. I have on a number of occasions contacted my MP or at a local level our parish council to raise my concerns.

I read and listen to political arguments from all side and make up my on mind.

But as Baggs and Others have succinctly stated, (my) life has it own day to day issues, that have to be navigated without been battered by another's point of view.

I personally choose to stay out of 'The kitchen' ?

Lucca Fri 28-Oct-22 17:02:38

must be either bored stiff with nothing else to do

Not necessarily

Same could be said of those who rant about a certain couple !

Oh so anything political is not allowed in Chat ? I didn’t realise that.

Some people don't want to talk or not talk about politics. They just want a row. No one has to be part of such inanity.

That’s not specific to politics threads though, there are people on many threads who are spoiling for a row, and disagree on principle with the original poster.

DaisyAnne Fri 28-Oct-22 17:30:51

Very true, Casdon.

Do you mean women you know in Real Life or Gransnetters who say this on GN?

Perhaps posters may be interested in politics in RL but have no desire to join in threads on GN with unknown people, which are on the internet, not just GN, for ever and which often end up in bickering.

Normandygirl Fri 28-Oct-22 17:53:42

I think the point that the OP was making, is that politics is part of almost every single aspect of our lives from health right through to travel problems, with a couple of exceptions.
Why shouldn't it be included in the discussion?

TerriBull Fri 28-Oct-22 17:54:29

"Some people don't want to talk or not talk about politics. They just want a row"

I have often thought that too, sometimes such a poster's address, to no one person specifically, but take aim collectively, for example "if you lot can't understand/agree" something along those lines pertaining to whatever the issue is, giving out the impression that the lumpen proletariat are just too dense to participate in whatever is under discussion.

Lathyrus Fri 28-Oct-22 17:57:56

Political discussion

Bit of an oxymoron isn’t it??

DaisyAnne Fri 28-Oct-22 18:08:27

It doesn't need to be Lathyrus.

MissAdventure

"I fell down a pothole today"

"Ah, well did you ask yourself about the infrastructure... closing down of small businesses... tory policy"?

"No, I just rolled around on the floor groaning".

I think the logical order is to rool around the floor groaning.

Then wait for 5 hours for an ambulance, then a few more hours in Casualty. And then, yes, ask the local Cpuncil about the infrastructure, for sure.

Fleurpepper Fri 28-Oct-22 18:22:13

If they don't listen, go Commando like Rod Stewart!

*baggs*, as always, talks an awful of sense.

And, say someone wants a rant about the railways, they maybe just want a rant about the railways, not a lecture on how it was much better before privatisation, how Brexit made it worse and how the UK's trains will never be as good as the rest of Europe.

They maybe just wanted to say that Passenger Assistance in Manchester last week abandoned them and they are spitting tacks. As happened to DS1.

Very frustrating and annoying, for sure. And ranting about it to friends and family, on GN or FB, Twitter or whatever, is totally understanding as an initial reaction.

But what is that going to achieve? What are you going to do to stop this happening to others, perhaps more vulnerable.

I do believe that writing to the Senior Manager of the railway line, would make sense. To the local Press too. But even better, write to your MP, or go to her/his Surgery, and demand action. this is not Party political, but it is being politically involved, and perhaps even make a difference.
