God, who would want to be them? For all their wealth and large houses I wouldn’t want the utter humiliation of having this mall dredged up,p again just as he is about to have his coronation.

Who hasn’t made silly phone calls to their beloveds for want of a better word. But to have it recorded and constantly dredged up is awful for them.

eazybee - It isn’t “aimed at people who search the web for private conversations” - who does that? I’m guessing a high % of the millions of viewers watch it for the sumptuous costumes and scenery and many won’t even know about the events portrayed. Those who criticise it and have never watched it shoukd watch the first series before criticising.

Why is anyone surprised?
It is a programme aimed at the type of person who searches the internet to listen to recordings of that and other deeply personal and private conversations between people in the public eye.

We tried to watch this show but gave up. I'm just not keen on dramatisation of real events. Especially when so many involved are still alive.

I completely agree with Chestnut. The Claire Foy episodes were very good, but from then on it has lost its way, though some of the acting - notably Prince Charles - is excellent. I shall try not to watch, but curiosity may overcome me.

Apparently they are going to show disturbing stuff about Diana as well (the crash) So Camilla should also get a turn. What's good for the goose and all that.
At least Camilla is alive and able to defend herself.
I don't think they should be showing any of it, but at least theyre spreading the bad taste evenly.

Actually it’s not as lurid as I remembered.

Part of the transcript reads:

What did he have to say Urmston? I always thought it sounded far-fetched, in light of subsequent tabloid behaviour!

I watched the first two seasons with Claire Foy which I enjoyed, the wedding, the Coronation, the young Queen learning how to cope with her role, being helped by Winston Churchill etc. Once Olivia Colman entered the ring the whole thing collapsed as far as I was concerned. She was po faced and miserable, nothing like the real Queen who apparently had a wicked sense of humour. It also became too personal once the Queen's children grew up. I found this uncomfortable and stopped watching. No way should they have season 5 which covers the 1990s.

Mind you, that ‘tampon’ phone conversation was toe-curling wasn’t it? It won’t be any better (or worse) in the re-telling. Might surprise some of the younger audience who weren’t around or aware at the time.

I love the Crown - the sets, the costumes, I especially loved the first series with the historical scenes. I’ll definitely watch the new series, I don’t think it will be as good as the earlier series as we know the stories. I don’t see the RF as deities, but celebrities whose lives are constantly under scrutiny by tabloids and gossip mags. There are plenty of other TV shows based on real life personalities, the RF aren’t above this. The series is popular and makes loads of dosh for Netflix, My relatives in Ireland and Italy love it.

On the matter of the phone calls - hard to believe that it was over 30 years ago.

If I remember rightly, this conversation, and one of Diana's, was supposedly stumbled upon by an innocent radio ham who accidentally picked them up?

With hindsight that sounds unlikely, more the work of the tabloids bugging their phones.

It's unrealistic to expect media companies not to make such a series - the RF are good box office, whether we like it or not.

Haven't we all watched dramas about President Kennedy, his assassination, including close-ups of his skull shattering; his infidelities, Jackie's remarriage, etc. The same with the Clintons and Bill's behaviour.

We would all be mortified to find our phone sweet mutterings made public... how toe-curlingly awful it must be.

I am disgusted that they plan to show such recent disturbing and controversial events. I think we were all shocked and horrified by the car crash, and felt great sadness for the family especially the two boys. Why would any of us want to relive that again in Netflix's ridiculous fantasy world? There are plenty of documentaries and other sources of information if anyone wants to know more.

It's rubbernecking on the past in my opinion, like stopping to look at a car crash on the motorway. It's not the decent thing to do.

Netflix should not be so crass as to revisit this awful period, especially in light of the Queen's recent passing and the forthcoming Coronation. They should have stopped at Charles and Diana's wedding and left it there. It's all about greed and money.

Well it's hardly surprising is it. I don't watch it but haven't they also covered or going to cover Diana's interview and the crash that resulted in her untimely death.

Just another crass and bad taste decision and yet Harry doesn't appear to be bothered about being in their pay.
