Joey Barton, the football manager, accused of assaulting his wife has been let off. She called 999 saying he had hit her and repeated it to the police and had bruises and injuries. She subsequently withdrew her statement and said they had been drinking with friends - she fell over kind of thing. The prosecution decided not to call her as a witness and still proceeded. The judge said he would not get a fair trial when the wife was not being called to give evidence. Doesn’t sound right to me.
