Fantastic clever birds what a wonderful sight to have seen

They are such intelligent birds. I remember seeing a documentary years ago about crows, in Japan, putting wallnuts all along the white line by traffic lights, then wait for the lights to go green and then red again- and collecting all the nuts released by the cars going over them. Mesmerising.

I'd phone the BBC and tell them about it. Sure they'd love to film this. Or your local wildlife photographer or RSPB.

I’ve seen programmes about corvids and they are highly intelligent. I know when I put food out for them I shout out ‘ hey crows’ and they appear from nowhere. They’re probably rooks but the corvids seem to have a pecking order. I’m on a corvid Facebook page and people will post how many times their corvid friends bring them thank you gifts. Years ago a bird watching friend of mine told me his favourite birds were rooks and I didn’t understand him at the time but I do now.

Yesterday as I was walking along our waterfront in town, I could hear popping sounds. I soon realized that there were crows dropping mussels from about the height of 25-30 feet, then eating them as the shells broke.

There were quite a few of them, and it was quite amusing to watch! Some would drop the same shell quite a few times to crack it, but others got it in one go. That particular walkway had quite a few broken shells on it, so it must be a handy spot for them.

Have you ever seen animals doing clever things?
