Fireworks

It's been a couple of years now since we've had fireworks at this intensity.

At least one of my cats is really stressed out. If they do that to the domestic animals what are they doing for the wildlife? And the livestock? And I am sure to suffer with asthma tomorrow.

Isn't it time we did as the Italians do, and insist on silent fireworks only?

Is it

It's been quite quiet round here but I suppose there aren't many people in our road who are likely to have fireworks. My cat never seems bothered at all, in fact tonight he was so energised by the fireworks that he went out in the rain and came back with a mouse that he devoured very noisily in the living room. Can't remember the Last time he caught one but he was very pleased with himself.

I noticed that Aldi were advertising boxes of quiet fireworks this year.

It is very noisy here despite the fact that the weather is horrid and it is very misty/foggy ,my cat who is elderly and deaf is sleeping on the back of my sofa totally unperturbed for once but 2 of my neighbours feed a lovely stray cat who hunkers down in the fields nearby and I hate to think of him being frightened by all the loud bangs.

Auntieflo Sat 05-Nov-22 21:47:06

It's quiet no here as well.
But you can bet that at midnight there will be another burst.

rafichagran Sat 05-Nov-22 21:38:37

It's all gone quiet now where I live.

I always kept my cats in, but they never appeared at all bothered by the noise of fireworks.

Tonight is one of the noisiest Bonfire Nights I can ever remember. I don’t like it.

Weve had fireworks each night since Diwali. Some nights just a few in the distance but some nights they’ve been very loud. My dog was traumatised on Diwali and some of the fireworks had such a loud bang that I could feel it as well as hear it! To ight she was less traumatised but unsettled, till one bang made her wee… then she lay on the hall floor moaning mournfully.

I think it’s great that people enjoy the celebrations but their loud noises should be legislated out of existence.

Iam64 Sat 05-Nov-22 21:05:14

It started this afternoon and since 5pm has been consistent, very loud bangs.
I always introduce my puppies and any new dogs yo the firework noise you can download. Start very low, play several times a day, gradually increasing the volume. Don’t fuss, abound reassuring just get on with your day. All my dogs have been fine. The current two are sleeping through the loud bangs, thankfully.
I wish we would move to organised displays only, on specific days. The combination of bonfire night, new year and various religious celebrations means it’s likely to be fairly consistent till February

We babysat at my daughter's last Saturday night and her staffie, normally a dog with quite a presence in the house and on the sofa, disappeared at the sound of the first fireworks.
I found her in the downstairs toilet, with an expression on her face that quite clearly said, "I'll be ok, but just leave me here and go away."

They're defo not deaf. They can hear the sound of the cat food tin through 3 doors and 2 floors.

I wasn’t sure if “Hermes the magnificent” was deaf, the vet wasn’t sure. I tested him by noisily opening a tin of food while he was sleeping, not a flicker, so I wafted the lid under his nose and he was off!
I said to the vet he was either deaf or very stupid. The vet said he could be both!

Just watched my local authority display from my window. Quite beautiful.

We've had three hours of it so far tonight, and it's very loud. As one lot stops another starts. I don't begrudge others the pleasure either, I just wish it was quieter. It sounds like a war is going on outside our house. If they only used quiet ones we wouldn't even know it was happening then they would be happy with their spectacle and we'd be happy with the peace.

Wyllow3 Sat 05-Nov-22 20:18:01

Also say that I think there has been a financial hit - less than last year.

Wyllow3 Sat 05-Nov-22 20:16:34

btw, had 2 cats for 14 years and though they preferred indoors, it didnt terrify them.

No idea why it affects some, not others?

maddyone Sat 05-Nov-22 20:15:45

There are lots of fireworks going off around here tonight. Possibly because Bonfire Night falls on a Saturday this year.
I had one little cat who was terrified of the fireworks, and two others who weren’t really bothered. I have no cats now.

Nice one grin

Wyllow3 Sat 05-Nov-22 20:14:44

I loved it as a child (well, no one could afford more than bonfires, sparklers, Catherine wheels etc)

Nothing wrong with the fun and enjoyment of lighting up dark skies in cold November: people coming together:

so I'm not going to condemn or begrudge the pleasure, but just say, if its done like karma lady describes, enjoyment but no harm, surely that is the way to go?

I had a cat that loved fireworks. Deaf as a housebrick! Loved the bright lights and colours.

GagaJo Sat 05-Nov-22 19:59:28

It's odd. Neither of my cats are bothered at all. Not even the pathetically wimpy boy who hides when he hears someone come in the back door. It's almost as if they can't hear them.

Calendargirl Sat 05-Nov-22 19:52:28

On our local Facebook page, someone enquired if the local organised Firework display was ‘dog friendly’?

Obviously hoping to take doggie along!

Joane123 Sat 05-Nov-22 19:50:36

It has been dreadful here, and is still going on. My little dog has been sick. I hate it.

ginny Sat 05-Nov-22 19:47:02

We have had loads of firework noise tonight and also last night.
To be honest I’m surprised so many people have the money to burn.
