I’m fuming!

My lovely 97 year old friend has a birthday today. Her daughter was taking her to The Ivy for a celebratory lunch. She was so looking forward to it. However the daughter was held up for hours on the M25 by the Protesters on the gantries. So my friend never had her birthday lunch or saw her daughter. I’m so disappointed for her.

We are a democracy so I am not against protests per se, but when they cause such chaos and upset it’s unforgivable.

A missed lunch is not the end of the world Climate change will be though

Racingsparrow Thu 10-Nov-22 16:11:36

We in this country can do very little about climate change. In comparison to countries like China, India, Russia etc. we produce very little CO2 . China alone in the last 10 years has produced more CO2 than we have since the start of the Industrial Revolution. They are building coal powered power stations a the rate of about one a month. If we get to to net zero all we will have done is ruined our country and China will still be pumping out CO2 and laughing at us.

I'm just wondering how they got there.........

I am sending this while sheltering behind sofa. Was recently reading a novel with well researched stuff in it about the suffragette movement.
Why are you doing this?
We want to vote.
But (you stupid woman) why? Your husband can do that for you.
Complete incomprehension.
And now.
Why are you doing this? I have scheduled operations to perform.
We are doing this because we believe the world is burning up and not enough is being done about it quickly enough. We want to force swift action.
I can see protesters point. A day's worth of cancellations v end of the world. What is actually being done about it all is far too little and probably too late

If the motorways are blocked where on earth do you think all the traffic goes. The A roads in the surrounding areas are then gridlocked. No one knows in advance which section of the motorway is going to be hit or the police would be waiting for them ready to lock them up with a bit of luck

Theoddbird Thu 10-Nov-22 15:24:16

If they had protested on a quiet road out in the country they would not have got their point across would they. If the meal is rescheduled maybe she should set her satnav not to go on motorways. She should have done that before as this protest was mentioned on all the tv channels.

Just disrupting. No solutions, no plans for how an economy without oil would work. No idea really 🙁

Not achieving anything.

Not wanting to achieve anything except disruption.

Musicgirl Thu 10-Nov-22 14:44:55

One poor man was on the news as he had missed his father’s funeral because of the protesters. Whichever route he tried to take was blocked. It is totally unacceptable.

undines Thu 10-Nov-22 14:42:07

I can see both sides. I understand the UTTER frustration - and indeed, panic - felt by these protestors who live with the knowledge of what is happening to our planet and see very little being done to stop the slide to disaster. I only live comfortably but shutting off that reality, most of the time. But, yes, they will lose support if they cause such disruption. I guess they wonder what it will take for people to take notice and they might argue that a birthday lunch and even a surgeon's list are nothing compared with global disaster. It's all so dreadful.

Nannapat1 Thu 10-Nov-22 13:43:36

Totally agree with original OP. Not just the huge disappointment of this friend, but flights were missed and as others have said, operation lists cancelled.
Perhaps if the protestors had some practical ideas to put forward rather than wailing from the top of a gantry hiw angry they are, they might actually get somewhere.

Lindy Thu 10-Nov-22 13:23:52

Yesterday was my husbands funeral and the family we were expecting were caught up in the protest therefore didn't make it! I know their protests are justified but maybe find a different way

GoldenAge Thu 10-Nov-22 13:20:04

Peaceful protest - I'm all for it
Stupid disruption - Dead against it

Grantanow Thu 10-Nov-22 12:58:00

The arrest of an LBC radio reporter and a photographer by police at an M25 demo smacked of police state actions in the tinpot dictatorships elsewhere in the world. They were journalists doing their job for a free press. The policemen who arrested them should be severely reprimanded and a public apology given. We can't tolerate this police heavy-handed behaviour in a democracy.

TwiceAsNice Thu 10-Nov-22 12:55:10

There was a poor guy on the one day who missed his fathers funeral. He said he was crying in a gridlock telling his sister he wouldn’t make it. He says he’ll never forgive them and so don’t blame them. They should be responsible for the costs

Mauriherb Thu 10-Nov-22 12:37:18

I missed a funeral yesterday because of the protesters, and despite leaving myself extra time for the journey . Very annoying

Nannina Thu 10-Nov-22 12:26:30

I heard a distraught man on the radio who had missed his father’s funeral due to the protesters. I think their actions are turning people off their cause, upsetting ordinary people allows the powers that be to focus on the action not on their the root c

orly Thu 10-Nov-22 12:09:53

That's the problem with the general population "respecting" everyone's right to protest and demonstrate. It's OK until you are personally affected by such reckless actions. Whether it's people throwing eggs at the King or stopping traffic for hours on the motorway preventing operations or birthday treats. I hope these privileged protesters spend Christmas, New Year and Easter in jail

PamQS Thu 10-Nov-22 12:02:03

I’m really sorry your friend’s birthday was ruined 😡 I’ve never understood the purpose of ‘stopping oil’. These demonstrators are so sanctimonious about their own views being right, they don’t care about anyone else’s views or rights, including people in need of an ambulance.

sweetcakes Thu 10-Nov-22 11:49:16

I read that one gentleman missed his father's funeral he was most distraught.

Keeper1 Thu 10-Nov-22 11:45:31

I am assuming they climbed up with the traffic still moving?. So leave them there why risk emergency services lives getting them down?

Foxyferret Thu 10-Nov-22 11:29:19

I saw on twitter the French police ripping the protesters hands from the tarmac Ouch! They are going the wrong way by alienating the public. Have they considered their clothes, mobiles, trainers and possibly also their banners all contain some sort of oil. My mum is 96 and has oil central heating. She would like an alternative but cannot possibly afford it. Should we leave her to freeze to death?

Grantanow Thu 10-Nov-22 11:25:19

This kind of protest damages people's lives and may result in deaths through blocking essential services. No doubt the protestors argue that such damage and death is marginal compared with the massive effects of climate change in the future but that doesn't wash with people whose friends and relatives are put at risk now.

spabbygirl Thu 10-Nov-22 11:22:56

I do agree, that is not the right way to protest

M0nica Wed 09-Nov-22 14:38:46

Their wider aim is to disrupt society, to make us angry and disaffected in the hope this will leave the way open for rightwing and anarcchist groups to take over as those at the top of society.

Lathyrus Wed 09-Nov-22 09:17:02

MerylStreep

This is what can happen to anyone who who protests outside any building belonging to the Chinese government. This is in full view of British police.

www.reuters.com/world/uk/police-investigate-beating-protester-china-consulate-grounds-uk-2022-10-17/

The men were dragged into consulate grounds. When the Police were called they went in and rescued them.
