My lovely 97 year old friend has a birthday today. Her daughter was taking her to The Ivy for a celebratory lunch. She was so looking forward to it. However the daughter was held up for hours on the M25 by the Protesters on the gantries. So my friend never had her birthday lunch or saw her daughter. I’m so disappointed for her.

We are a democracy so I am not against protests per se, but when they cause such chaos and upset it’s unforgivable.

M0nica - yes he has been remanded in Wandsworth Prison until his case comes to court in December. Let's hope he gets a nice long sentence - a very dangerous man indeed.

Saetana I am so relieved to read your post. I have made several posts on the back ground and history of Roger Hallam that show that he is a very dangerous man, whose main aim in life is to disrupt society and lead to its eventual breakdown and that all these disruptive climate change groups he has formed and their tactics are just a means to an end.

I was quite disturbed to see how few, if any people, actually took this on board.

Wow - I think we have finally found a topic on Gransnet on which we all agree! Roger Hallam is a very dangerous man who leads something akin to a cult in Just Stop Oil - apparently they are recruiting lonely young people from universities to join the protests, telling them basically that the world is going end pretty much NOW! Fortunately he is currently on remand for his activities - they only remand people who are highly likely to get a custodial sentence, lets hope its a long one! I heard that recording of that poor guy who missed his father's funeral - devastating...

How many private jets were at COP27? Cant these bloody people fly commercial?

biglouis Thu 10-Nov-22 21:36:54

I just today filled out a YUGOV poll on this. The dominant opinion (which I share) was that the right to protest is integral to a democratic society. However protesters should not be able to employ violence or tactics which cause inconvenience to others such as blocking roads, etc. The courts should deal with them much more harshly. Think how the suffragettes were treated by forced feeding and the "cat and mouse" laws.

In this country, we are stopping oil and gas and are doing better than many other countries. 50% of our electricity now comes from renewable and carbon neutral sources, lighting technology and car design also mean that the amount of fuel consumed by cars and use in lighting has fallen considerably because of this efficiency.

Where we lag behind (sorry) is in insulation, in homes, offices and industry. So far government initatives have been so badly structured they are a failure.

I'm sorry for this lady and others whose plans went awry, however this is a serious issue and needs people to wake up and smell the daisies. I imagine this is their effort to make this happen. As someone above said, we need to plan how this is going to work. We DO need to stop oil.

How else can man made climate change be brought to the policymakers' attention?

Polite requests clearly don't interest people.

Even decent intelligent older people like on Gransnet seldom talk about the danger to their grandchildren from climate change.

In democracies nobody will take the drastic actions that would be needed to slow down climate change because there would be a massive outcry, court actions, demonstrations, demands for a change of government because nobody, myself included, is prepared to change their lives to the extent that we would need to change or lives.

The protesters still want their commodities made across the world and shipped or flown here. Look at what they’re wearing.
Their travels - cue South American photos or getting to their protest.
Their food again shipped across the world.

Their………well their lives full of the things they want.

Just like the rest of us.

They’ve achieved nothing.

Aww how sad

Allsorts Thu 10-Nov-22 18:56:33

I like others are so many others are doing their bit for climate change, no time for these protestors, I feel so sorry for that man missing his mothers funeral.

rosie1959 Thu 10-Nov-22 18:55:28

And how much difference are these idiots going to make absolutely zilch.
I am surprised they are allowed to get away with for so long

Lathyrus Thu 10-Nov-22 18:48:26

I think it’s all part of the selfie/fame/internet etc culture.

It’s not the cause they care about. It’s the chance to become famous.

Even if it’s a pathetic little picture for a day in the Daily Mail.

I bet they have it blown up to a giant poster size and frame it for their room.😬

Stressedok Thu 10-Nov-22 18:37:51

Honestly their actions have now stopped any sympathy or support for them. They are affecting people's lives. Arrest their asses and educated them how their actions have hurt normal people

Katek Thu 10-Nov-22 18:32:26

Surely not a car Lathyrus........, no bikes, Shanks' Pony? Oh and I presume they realise that hydrocarbons are used in the production of the cyanoacrylate glue that they're using?

Camelotclub Thu 10-Nov-22 18:14:13

It's a day out for these numbskulls. Livens up their otherwise pointless lives.

Dottynan Thu 10-Nov-22 17:15:35

Grantanow; If the LBC reporter and photographer were on the gantry then they should be prosecuted. They too were breaking the law

GrannyGravy13 Thu 10-Nov-22 16:47:05

This is the young lady from the gantry at junction 30 of the M25 on Monday.

Did she swim to Argentina, or just another do as I say not as I do hypocrite?

katy1950 Thu 10-Nov-22 16:39:15

These protesters have completely shot themselves in the foot I will never support them now and I'm pretty sure other people feel the same .They all appear to middle class / money folk who have nothing better or constructive to do

effalump Thu 10-Nov-22 16:31:41

For a start, this is not what I'd call a 'peaceful protest'. When people are losing out on (possibly) life saving operations, I'd call it terrorism and the perpetrators should be prosecuted severely for it. Either that or, in the case of the woman who poured excrement over Sir Tom Moore sculpture, or spraying paint on buildings, should be subject to the same treatment and see how they like it. If the Govt. don't want to prosecute these people, then their parents or families should pay for the damage. At least some reparation somewhere or they think they can always get away with it. If someone gets so p****d off with them and assaults one of them, he/she would most like end up in prison. This is not acceptable at all.

Sawsage2 Thu 10-Nov-22 16:28:16

I read that in France that protesters are 'removed' from the roads whether or not they glue their hands to the road.

Lathyrus Thu 10-Nov-22 16:18:44

Katek

I'm just wondering how they got there.........

I think one of the leaders drove some of them there in her petrol driven car…

Lathyrus Thu 10-Nov-22 16:17:54

Along with manufactured orange paint that’s going to need chemicals to clear up

Cambia Thu 10-Nov-22 16:15:43

I can’t understand why when they glue themselves to something, they aren’t just left there without food or toilet facilities for a couple of days! (Obviously not on a motorway). I bet they would soon be reaching for the glue solvents then.

Plus to this day the majority of adhesives are manufactured from petroleum-based materials. Isn’t this what they are objecting about in the first place?

I am sending this while sheltering behind sofa. Was recently reading a novel with well researched stuff in it about the suffragette movement.
Why are you doing this?
We want to vote.
But (you stupid woman) why? Your husband can do that for you.
Complete incomprehension.
And now.
Why are you doing this? I have scheduled operations to perform.
We are doing this because we believe the world is burning up and not enough is being done about it quickly enough. We want to force swift action.
I can see protesters point. A day's worth of cancellations v end of the world. What is actually being done about it all is far too little and probably too late

They’re not doing anything about it. They won’t have saved a day in this future they’re so worried about. N fact they’ve probably brought it one day closer.

That is the point.
