The need to announce that you’re lighting a candle, or you’ve lit a candle or however you let others know that you’ve lit or you will be lighting a candle is VS.

if I say, "I'll light a candle for you" its saying, you are in my thoughts in a specially poignant way. Like an acknowledgment of something particularly important.
That is very different though. That is a supportive gesture between the two people concerned, not an announcement to the world at large that someone is planning to light a candle to people they don't know, which is dangerously close to appropriating other people's loss and grief to make them look good.

In fact on another internet chat room I was on (its defunct now) there was a regular "Light a Candle" thread and it was for people who had lost someone dear or for example had suffered badly in some way..

I dont see this as virtue signalling personally. It used to have real symbolic significance as it felt like a sharing and acknowledgment and people said they appreciated it greatly.

Fairly obvious I'd have thought......displaying your 'goodness' or 'philanthropy' for all to see and therefore earn you earthly praise won't be earning brownie points on a heavenly scale.

Some people can't so much as think a good thought without wanting a round of applause, others toil for hours in total obscurity.

I reread through your first comment earlier and it got me thinking about how many labels most of us carry

Like for me, as just a few examples:

Woman
Working class
Estranged

All of us are individuals but there is always an element of people who only see the label and try to force us to carry their perceptions of who we must be by belonging to that group.

Estranged.. Well that one carries an amount of judgement based on the experience of those who have been estranged and some cannot help but project their pain onto any person forced to estrange as if the reasons for estrangement are all the same.

Working class, again carries a lot of judgement from those who believe their fight to get where they are in life is diminished by people asking for enough to get by. No matter how necessary working class people are to their everyday life.

And I saved this till last. Women, something most of us understand here comes attached with so many judgements about what our sex should look like, how we should behave, what we are capable of.

But we are all individuals. We should never be confined by labels. We should never be judged for the behaviour of people we don't even know.

Trans people as a whole, should never be judged for the labels people assign to them or their perceptions or even their experiences .

Women, I feel out of any label, or I prefer, demographic, should understand this the most.

We are, every single one of us, wholly individual.

Anybody who wants a round of applause for say, lighting a candle, is pretty egotistical. There are people out there spending hours, days of their life, comforting and attending the homeless on our streets who want total anonymity. I happen to know one such person, they are the true angels on earth.
