I have an irrational aversion to the word chuckle. Tell me that you laugh or even guffaw but do not chuckle. It sounds so twee to my ears.

Fanny, when people in the hospitality industry use the 'not a problem' response to my requests I always say 'I'm glad to hear that'. Reactions have varied!

Like is used at lot at the end of a sentence by lots of people in Liverpool I don't know why though.

I think that ‘like’ is a sign of diffidence, so is mostly used by young people who lack confidence. Apparently. I try to look at it that way anyway, as it makes it a tiny bit less infuriating .

Whenever they interview people from Liverpool they always seem to choose those who say "like" or "and erm" a lot. I think some people use it while they pause for thought or grapply for a word.

Doodledog One of my daughter’s chums, who I think the world of, has been doing the “like” thing since they were at school. She’s now 47 😁 She has a degree and a fairly high powered job. I’ve watched other people have a conversation with her and it doesn’t appear to bother them at all. It makes my teeth grind.
And I would definitely make you scream, I’m partial to a “Not” and admit to using “uni”. However, if I was writing a formal letter, I wouldn’t use either, so it very much depends on circumstance.

‘Lol’, except when something has been genuinely and intentionally funny. Used sarcastically it is unimaginative.

‘Not’ at the end of a sentence- as in ‘that was genuinely funny - not’, for the same reason.

But the one that makes me want to scream is ‘uni’, said by anyone over 50.
