One of my adult nephews home from college was very annoyed by the lack of matching socks returning from the laundry. "What kind of house is this that there are never any matching socks?" To illustrate his point he held up two socks. "Look at these. One is long and one is regular" My sister answered with a totally straight face, "Doh. Left and right. Totally matching"

I don’t understand this. I’ve never heard of colleges doing laundry.

The Academy that my DGS & DGD attend, has very strict rules re school uniform with the exception of socks. Consequently MY DGS makes a point of wearing brightly coloured, non-matching socks every day. A large percentage of the pupils and even some of the staff have adopted the fashion. It is a small, harmless nod to non conformity.

I buy huge packs of socks, about 20 pairs, simple black, and the old ones are given to charity or put into our rag bag.
All socks match and every 3 or 4 years they are renewed.
One less problem in life.
