What’s in your garden?

As it’s such a cold day, I intend to stay inside, but was out early to feed the birds.
At the moment, there’s half a dozen blue tits on the fat ball hanger, while three fat wood pigeons, a pair of black birds, a magpie, and a robin are attacking the seed mix on the ground.
What’s in yours?

A plate of oatmeal boiled in a little water and quite a lot of olive oil. Cooled, and placed under the crabapple tree to give them a change from the crabapples. They did nor even taste it. I think the fallen crabapples may have become alcoholic.

I get doves, and piegeons daily. Also a cheeky little robin comes to feed on birdtable too. Tuesday my neighbours were here for a cuppa and we spotted through the window a heron flying overhead and landing on the tall conifers at the back. We were all fascinated to see this. It looked like a prehistoric bird with long neck and legs and massive beak. Cats are visiting too as foot prints in the snow.

Lots of hard frost and one doggy do !
The hard frost has been here since beginning of last week.
According to my computer it is -5 C outside

We haven't heard our resident owl for a while. I hope he/she is ok.

lixy Thu 15-Dec-22 10:25:01

I heard an owl out hunting last night - not heard that since last Spring.

Some of your gardens sound absolutely wonderful - teaming with wildlife. I had 2 hedgehogs who came every night to feed a few months ago, so I hope they’re safely hibernating in the little house hidden in the corner of my garden. This isn’t an area for squirrels, so I was delighted to have one (unfortunately a grey) visiting in January and bought proper squirrel food for it and named it Hazel - I hope it comes back.
An apple is going out every day for the blackbirds, the wood pigeons are getting fatter on all the seed, and I can barely keep up with the fat balls for the tits! I’ve special food for my robins, but it’s a free for all out there - I don’t mind, as they all need to feed to live.
It’s such a pleasure to watch them, from inside a warm house.

Our shared garden is full of foxes. So sadly we can’t feed the birds as we would like to. Neighbours feed them so the squirrels and birds don’t stand a chance. Such a shame.

Blue tits great tit long tail tits constantly feeding from the suet balls. Resident robin chasing blackbirds and wood pigeons. Every day squirrels wait outside the kitchen door for me to put the nuts out. A female actually takes them from my hand since the end of May. A timid little mouse has been been eating scraps fallen from a fat ball this morning. I spend a lot of time watching the garden visitors and have done since I was very young.

Today the crabapple tree is the star of the show with blackbirds and wood pigeons eating plenty small crab apples that have fallen off the tree on the grass beneath, and loads of crabapples still on the tree. When I see the the heavy fat pigeons bending the twigs they walk on I think 'A partridge in a pear tree'.

Blue tits, great tits, goldfinches, a chaffinch, blackbirds, robins, magpies, gulls, fulmars and wood pigeons in the back garden where, oddly, ceanothus and viola are in flower. We haven’t seen the female sparrow hawk for a while.
The front garden is visited by hedgehogs and foxes.

3 roe deer running across the snowy lawn looking like a Christmas card
Fieldfares descended on and strpped the apple tree bare.
I haven't put out food but there are berries aplenty.

We have two cats so not much wildlife. The odd pigeon and white dove fly through but mainly our cats or the ones from next door. One of our rose bushes is still in bloom but everything is frozen. A few other shrubs still have flowers but probably not for long.

A pheasant Are you my neighbour, Yammy?
Please send him here for a photo opportunity!

Callistemon21 Wed 14-Dec-22 22:10:17

We just bought some nyjer seed to encourage them to eat here
The various tits.
Not the seagulls!

Callistemon21 Wed 14-Dec-22 22:09:24

Lots of sparrows, pigeons, a few blackbirds (one hen chasing off another), a magpie, a robin and a crow or two but no tits of any kind. They fly across but don't stop.
Gulls occasionally because someone near here feeds them.

We just bought some nyjer seed to encourage them to eat here.

We have seen goldfinches, coaltits, starlings, a sparrow hawk, a wrench, a jay in the past but not recently.

lixy Wed 14-Dec-22 21:50:46

Sparrows, goldfinches, blue and great tits, a couple of robins about as well as magpies and wood pigeons of course. Starlings on next door's front lawn. Crows, red kites and gulls around too.
Our sparrows like a cold bath too as do the starlings.

Really pleased to see a couple of greenfinches.

Hetty58 Wed 14-Dec-22 19:16:39

A pair of robins, blue tits, sparrows, wood pigeons, great tits and some ring-necked parakeets. I was amazed, having emptied the block of ice and refilled the birdbath (thinking they'd like a drink) - to see the sparrows queueing up for a good bath!

tanith Wed 14-Dec-22 18:57:04

Today I've had pigeons, starlings, blackbirds, magpies, sparrows, seagulls, crows, blue tits and circling overhead several Red Kites.
A real mix for suburban London garden.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 14-Dec-22 18:10:17

Loads of starlings, feral pigeons, wood pigeon, collared doves, sparrows, magpies, robin, wren, blackbird, and gold finches, plus the odd blue tit, seagull and crow.

Mice as well - next doors cat keeps himself amused for hours.

When it warms up next week I MUST finish planting the tulips.

MaizieD Wed 14-Dec-22 18:02:56

What's in my garden? Lots of very frozen plants which were deceived by the warm autumn weather into staying active for longer than they should have grin

Small birds are attacking the seed feeder and peanuts but leaving the fat balls. I assume they are too frozen solid for them.

The big apple tree which still has lots of fruit on it is alive with bigger birds having a good feast during daylight hours.

kircubbin2000 Wed 14-Dec-22 17:55:35

Ice is in my garden ,yard and front drive. I have not been able to go out since Sunday as the path is too dangerous. I thought it might have thawed today but it is so thick it stayed hard. Luckily I have stocked up with tins and my neighbour got me milk as he can get his car out.

Jaxjacky Wed 14-Dec-22 15:44:02

Pigeons, doves and leeks!

BigBertha1 Wed 14-Dec-22 14:49:44

Magpies, crows, blackbirds, sparrows and a sweet little robin has just come in the last week to eat the fruit bread I put out.
