Long story short, so many deliveries for Christmas at the mo. I simply assume they are as I ordered so open them ready to gift wrap. Simple, or so I thought .......
DH abroad until the 23rd. and never, ever in the last 40 odd years has he bought any presents for family etc. , my job, so happily opened the last arrival. Oh shit, it is obviously his gift to me !! Answers on a postcard please !

This was meant to be a frivolous post ! Simply a chat - of course I will pretend, no chance of telling the truth. Much the same as the look on his face when I say "Does my bum look big in this " .

Thanks all , still having a chuckle !
Weird thing is since we moved to Cornwall earlier in the year we have been really busy and I said one evening "Look at all that sky around us, it's amazing, I can actually see Ursa Major , the Plough etc. " Didn't think he was really listening but he obviously was, think he could be a keeper !

... eek!

Do you think it possible the telescope is a gift from him to himself? Or for both of you?

The reason I thought this is because I'm sitting here looking at a telescope lying carefully on the sofa - my partner bought it some time ago as he's keen on sky-gazing. He puts it on the sofa so that it doesn't get knocked over.

You must let us know the outcome!

Definitely wrap it up again. Trust me, he won’t notice. Anyway, round here the customs people check most parcels, unwrap them and rewrap them so maybe that is what happened with yours ?😇

Could you say you put amazon brown paper round it and then say you half opened it before spotting that it wasn't addressed to you so did it back up again as best you could. No mentioning telescopes.
On the side of the white lie here.

I'd go for this one or version of:

Come clean on the phone - was just opening the lot, accident opening, total delighted, over the moon, (geddit?) terribly sorry etc, looking forward to using it together, etc etc

and you might something nice from the tax free too.

A takeaway was delivered - and, as my daughter's family are staying here, I assumed it was ours. Luckily, having got the plates ready, just in time - I noticed the label, for next door! So very nearly a bloomer here too.

Normandygirl Sun 11-Dec-22 23:14:16

My DH wouldn't have a clue how an amazon parcel was packaged in the first place tbh. I could wrap it up again, slap some parcel tape on it and he wouldn't be any the wiser. smile

Hands up how many of you have bought a telescope in the last few decades ?

Me! I bought a small spotting scope to keep in the car, mainly for birds and wildlife but can be handy for the night skies too.

I also bought a pair of very large binoculars like those used by coastguard and RNLI. Fabulous for sea watching and star gazing. Have to be used on a tripod but they are brilliant.

Wrap it back up and look innocent!

At least if it's something you don't like you'll have your 'just what I always wanted' face ready!

This - simple!

jenpax Sun 11-Dec-22 20:02:55

Tell him it was delivered to a neighbour who opened it in error and re wrapped it and dropped it round 🤭

Grammaretto Sun 11-Dec-22 18:14:03

Ah well you have now explained that he knew you are "into" astronomy.
Ok so no answer apart from it wouldn't have bothered me one bit to have no surprise at Christmas.

hazel93 Sun 11-Dec-22 17:40:31

Having lived with him for decades I think I can safely say it is meant for me. How is a telescope "too specific " exactly ? Hands up how many of you have bought a telescope in the last few decades ?
Not quite the same as Hotel Chocolat I feel, which I love.Enjoy

Grammaretto Sun 11-Dec-22 17:21:23

Are you quite sure it was meant for you?
A telescope sounds a bit too specific. Could it be for himself?

I've just opened a present by mistake. I thought it might be something I ordered. The brown. Packages all look alike.

nadateturbe Sun 11-Dec-22 17:20:48

I just took delivery and pretended I hadn't looked too closely at the box. My OH believed me. Stupid Hotel Chocolat.
Do your best not to spoil the surprise.

hazel93 Sun 11-Dec-22 17:13:16

Of course I will blame the poor delivery guy, no other way to go.
Already preparing the " surprised and delighted face " which is very close to the truth. TBH clear as a bell here tonight so itching to use it ! Not nice me.

ParlorGames Sun 11-Dec-22 16:58:02

Definitely go with the rewrapping with ransom tape and mention how 'sorry' the delivery man was for damaging the packaging.

When you live in an area with street lights, etc. you just don’t appreciate what the sky looks like on a clear night. One of the best memories of my life is getting mildly drunk, lying down on the roof of a boat moored on Loch Ness. I’ll never forget the awesome sight above us, it’s like you could reach up and touch every star.
I’m very lucky where I live, we have a wonderful public observatory.

😂👍

Blossoming Sun 11-Dec-22 16:28:11

When you open it just say “I never saw that coming.”

I’ll get me coat…

Some of you lot are no help whatsoever !!
No idea why his lover would want a telescope !
Still laughing.

At least it wasn't a microscope!!

Oh well, just brazen it out and enjoy Xmas!

grannydarkhair Sun 11-Dec-22 16:08:27

I’m jealous, I wish somebody would buy me a good telescope. I take it you’re into astronomy? Galaxy has the best name for that 😀
