Foods you can no longer eat

Went to a lovely Italian restaurant last week and had the best fettuccine boscaiola I have ever eaten.
Now, it’s been a few years since I’ve eaten this rather rich dish but all my life I’ve had a cast iron stomach and nothing upset it.
Not any more. Had reflux for hours, really badly. I do have a hiatus hernia now so should have known better.
What foods can you no longer eat? What upsets your stomach as you have aged?

My stomach is growling just writing the words!

I am so relieved to read the replies. I am trying to work out what is really upsetting my gut. Could be porridge, coffee, milk? The usual culprits sprouts, leeks, chillies, onions and garlic I treat with caution. Baked beans and other beans of course.

All things I love. Dammit.

Like Lucy Locket, I take Gaviscon. My Doctor prescribed it because I suffer Gastric Reflux.

Has this happened to anyone else?
I foolishly at some dark chocolate 1 hour before bedtime around 4 weeks ago.
That night, I woke up with what felt like a wobbly heart beat. My GP kindly checked this the following week and confirmed all was OK.
But, I've since developed a bitter taste in my mouth in the morning, and nausea, which lasts until lunchtime.
Gaviscon didn't help, and my daughter gave me a few Panteprozol, which stopped all symptoms thankfully.
My GP has refused to prescribe them, I think maybe based on cost, so I have Lansoprazole 15mg. 2 days in I am getting symptoms again. I don't think these are as effective as Panteprozol.
Could chocolate have started this off?
I was fine before, and could kick myself for having it..dark chocolate 85%

Dark chocolate is terrible for my reflux, can be up in the night with this suffering a bad attack which can make me feel wobbly and as if I have palpitations, it can also make me vomit.
It can set off a migraine as well.
So I can’t eat it. Ever. Milk chocolate is better but too much can also set off my reflux.
The worst culprit is soup, any kind really.
Have to double up on omeprazole if I have it. Curry and anything with chili’s in it are a no no. Fizzy drinks too.

You might find it better to start a new thread Gilly33, because subsequent posters have added to the original 2022 thread, rather than in reply to your post.

I have developed alcohol intolerance. Even just a tiny amount will bring on violent palpitations.

I miss the Friday night g&t and I no longer use wine in cooking.

Christmas cake was a big disappointment as I used to ‘feed’ it with Cointreau and it doesn’t taste the same without.

Pickled onions which I used to love, and still do but daren’t eat more than a finger nail size. Onion soup means I am not nice to be near.

I used to have an ‘iron stomach’ - not any more. I am just getting over a bout of ‘food poisoning’ - caused by an unhygienically prepared salad from a very popular store. I’m almost sure that was what caused it.

I sometimes get reflux completely out of the blue. I tend to just ignore it as when I next eat the same food invariably nothing happens at all.

VioletSky Sun 18-Dec-22 13:32:34

I have IBS and reflux

I've never been allergic to any foods but I have a tolerance level. Adding stress moves that tolerance level and so does aging.

So even where I've naturally are less of things that upset me, over time it takes less to upset me.

Peanuts are a no for me now
Any kind of longlife bread product
Shop bought cakes
Processed food
And tea is starting to cause issues sad

I would love to say it's helped my weight but nope!

cornergran Sun 18-Dec-22 13:20:48

Too much fat. I miss fish shop fish and chips the most.

Elusivebutterfly Sun 18-Dec-22 13:16:36

Like some others here, I cannot tolerate some acidic foods that I used to enjoy, especially grapefruit and kiwi fruit as they give me painful stomach cramps. Equally, I can no longer tolerate spicy food as I, not only get indigestion, but gum disease means a painful mouth. I can drink cold milk but hot milk makes me nauseous.
The worst thing for me is fizzy drinks, including sparkling water and prosecco. These give me severe indigestion.

kissngate Sun 18-Dec-22 12:20:20

Like others I have a HH and can't tolerate onions or leeks. Also shop bought pies/pastry plus foods with lots of fat content and anything fried.

Urmstongran Sun 18-Dec-22 12:17:21

So far, lucky me I can eat whatever I like!
More than likely that helped me to gain too much weight this past couple of years as I denied myself nothing of what I fancied.
Now?
I’m on a diet .... 😁

nanna8 Sun 18-Dec-22 12:09:20

I don’t like chilies anymore and I find the spicy curries too hard to digest. I used to like hot food but now I can manage a Thai red curry just about but not the green curries. I can still scoff lots of chocolate though.

Alioop Sun 18-Dec-22 12:03:26

I've Sjorgens disease so I get trouble with my stomach and esophagus. Anything spicy at all or that can cause acid like tomatoes, apples, etc is a nightmare as I end up with a feeling that I've a lump stuck in my throat and can't swallow properly. I've noticed chocolate is annoying it too so I'm not happy because I really love it.

i had bowel cancer and only have half my bowel left, i get diarrhea 3/4 days a week, i have to limit some items like mince, stew, cereal and anything spicy...miss my pakora, anything can set it off as my body has a problem with digesting food now. i had vulva cancer last year and had to have all my groin lymph nodes removed and that now limits the amount i can drink, anything from soups to cups of tea, but all the pills i take everyday keeps me going and funnily enough crisps and chocolate are not a problem....lol.

merlotgran Sun 18-Dec-22 11:38:40

I was found to be gluten intolerant ten years ago but so long as I follow a gf diet I can eat anything and everything.

That’s my problem. 🥳

dragonfly46 Sun 18-Dec-22 11:28:59

I have Diverticulosis and have not yet what foods set it off but certainly cabbage and other green veg can give me tummy ache which is a nuisance as I love them.

bevisp1 Sun 18-Dec-22 11:22:12

Since my 40’s I developed IBS, at first it was so bad that some fruits, ie oranges, wholemeal/seeded breads, the more creamier the milk made me worse so skimmed is good, some yogurts, cream and oily greasy foods, all made me feel unwell with bloatedness, pain, spasms, and labour like pains which made childbirth seem painless. I’m not so bad now & just 60+, but now get gastritis problems and there’s another load of food that can cause a flare up, especially oily food or acidic.

I get awful heartburn and reflux now if I eat citrus fruits, vine fruits or extreme spices like curry.
I replace mince pies, Xmas pud and Christmas cake with profiteroles, chocolate log, and trifle at this time of year so as not to miss out. 🎄🎅

I have a hiatus hernia that does the same to me.
In fact any food others enjoy at Christmas upsets me, especially cooked dried fruit. I substitute when I can and make the food for everyone else. The Christmas cake lasts till easter then the Simnel cake, which moves onto mincemeat loaf cake and tea bread. All for DH when he goes walking.
We hope o go to relations I have already got the omeprazole and Gaviscon ready.
The one thing I really miss is our traditional Rum Butter a delight to eat and a night of pain and reflux for doing so.

henetha Sun 18-Dec-22 10:33:33

It's horrible isn't it, GagaJo. But every cloud... at least it helps us lose weight. I hope you are able to enjoy your Christmas dinner at least. smile

Casdon Sun 18-Dec-22 10:29:55

It’s miserable isn’t it, walking a tightrope between what you want and what you know won’t cause issues later. I’ve had my gallbladder out, and have gastritis so can’t eat anything fatty, tomatoes or onions.

GagaJo Sun 18-Dec-22 10:19:04

Me too henetha. Not heartburn though. Makes me feel sick and then I have a bad stomach for about 24 hours. I've gone off a lot of foods I used to love. But as someone else has said, it is helping my weight.
