Frozen potatoes!!

I bought a large bag of potatoes to use over Christmas I stored them in the garage till needed so this morning I was in the garage and noticed they looked damp when i took a proper look they were wet and soft and squishy I've had to bin the lot. I'm sure I've stored potatoes before out there could it be just how freezing it was last week?

Definitely! My son took a tin of baked beans out of the garage last night for his dinner, and they were frozen in the middle. I’m dreading what it’s done to my dahlia tubers.

Yes that happened to me some years back when I stored the bag in the garage and we had severe frost for several days they were all,soft and squishy, yuck. So glad you found out now and not in Christmas day.

Thanks glad it’s not just me. Had to nip another and buy more.

My frozen fruit were easy peeler satsumas/ clementines.
There were too many in the net bag to put all in the fruit bowl, so thought they would keep fresh in the garage. Mistake.

Weird though the carrots, parsnips and swede that were also in the garage all defrosted and were fine to use.

Frost damage occurs in potatoes if the temperature drops below -1°C.

When they thaw they lose water immediately, the frost damaged tissue loses its structure and as Tanith found they become wet and mushy.

I don’t know if it’s true of other fruits or vegetables though.
