Thank you for bringing this to our attention, ixion. It was a beautiful programme. I changed channels to watch, then, Vardy v Rooney...my late father would have described this as "from the sublime to the gorblimey".

"Silent Night" always brings a lump to my throat, closely followed by "O Holy Night", although I think that is quite a modern one - I don't remember it from my childhood.

O Holy Night is not really modern - more that it has gained in popularity - it was more popular in the US than the UK originally

It was a French poem from 1843 that was set to music as a french carol in 1847 - the English version is from 1855

O Little Town of Bethlehem always makes me emotional - it's such a calm carol about what is now such a turbulent place.
