Apparently the coldest Christmas Eve in New York for 150 years - too cold to be out with DGS2, so he stayed inside whilst DD2 and I used cabs to get around.
Flight back tomorrow - God willing, then a claims form straight off to BA!!

It’s actually +2 now here and quite pleasant.

I'm concerned about my friend in Wisconsin as I've emailed her twice and had no reply yet.

Sounds awful in the reports we're getting. Best wishes to all US Gransnetters. Sending virtual hugs and blankets. brew

Sorry, should have said North American Gransnetters. CanadianGran, are you ok?

Hoping all US GNs are safe and everyone else of course. It must be very alarming, especially if it’s not the weather you’re used to. Although few are!
Our Seattle friends chose this year to spend Christmas at their place in the South of France for the first time. Good choice, although I hope their US home is ok.

My granddaughter was stuck at New York Airport at midnight last night. Fortunately she managed to get to her destination. I think New York declared a state of emergency yesterday due to the extreme weather conditions.

My son is in the mid-West. It was minus 23 the other night. ‘Only’ minus 11 now. hmm they seem to be managing to keep warm so far, though they’ve got various illnesses in the house. sad

I was talking on the phone to my son this morning who came back from Miami a week or so ago when the weather was a lovely mid twenties, I believe it's now really cold there now; I dread to think what it's like in the northern states, much worse I imagine as it's pretty much a nationwide bad spell. Here's hoping American GNs aren't too badly affected.

Sounds horrendous! A Dsis who lives on Cape Cod is escaping whatever they’ve got - and I expect it’s bad - since she arrived here about a fortnight ago - when we had snow and it was still most unusually 50 deg F there! She’s now in France with Dbro, Sil and Dd2, where the weather is much the same as here - as the SE U.K. anyway.

I haven’t asked, but hope she’s not worried about what’s happening in her neck of the Cape Cod woods.

It must be scary for so many - not just the cold, but knock on effects no power, water etc on previously totally unknown scale....I'm also with Whitewavemark in hoping that when lives return to a bit more normal, more serious attention/belief in climate change will be no longer ignored.

Georgesgran goodness, the cost!

Well, as regular GNs will know I am here in New York with DD2 her DH and my DGS2 for Christmas. We were an hour late leaving Heathrow and then another hour stuck on the tarmac for JFK - so it wasn’t a good start.
It is absolutely freezing but the worse news is that BA (not our favorite airline) has cancelled our flight home! No reason given. There was a chance of getting back on Boxing Day, but that flight is fully booked so we are faced with staying an extra night here - cost £2k plus a late checkout fee, still be be agreed.
I won’t go into all the extra details, but we are far from happy bunnies.

It looks awful on the news reports, especially for people living in mobile homes etc. Here's hoping the wind changes soon and everyone stays as safe as they can.

Global warming.

Meanders of jet stream are getting more and more extreme.

Keep safe our fellow American GNnters.

I'm in northern Florida and this is about as cold as we've seen in the 37 years we've lived here. I like cold at Christmas and can't complain as it's quite bearable but family in the Midwest have really gotten socked.

I hope iamaround is ok

JaneJudge Sat 24-Dec-22 12:20:38

it is dreadful sad

nanna8 Sat 24-Dec-22 12:14:01

Absolutely unbelievable and dangerously cold. The flights are delayed and chaos at airports. Just hope our friends in the US can cope with power cuts . I can’t imagine how some will survive.
