Cups and glasses - which way up?

Just watch how some people carry them with their fingers inside the cups and glasses . That is far more dangerous .

Rims up here as well: seems to be the norm for us GN's.
Mugs go on there own shelf, with handles pointing anyway. DD doesn't like that and always puts them back with handles facing to the right when she stays.
Whatever.

Never thought about it, they just get put into the cupboard. I’ve survived this long both here and elsewhere with no issues.

My mugs are placed in the cupboard rims up and handles pointing to the right. Not because I'm pernickety, but because it's the only way they all fit so that you door closes.
My teacups are in the bottom cupboard of a dresser. They are stacked in 3s.

Rims up for us. We put the most recently used ones at the back and take the next ones from the front so they are rotated.

I had my own mug at work. The communal dishwasher was the most unhygienic place in the building I think and I didn't use it, though we had a rota for emptying it so couldn't avoid it completely.

I store cups as Callistemon does, in fours, though only use them once in a blue moon. MiL had one at our house for when she visited, no-one else uses them!

Yes, I too was always taught that the rim on delicate glasses it the most likely place to chip and therefore glasses should be stored upright.

When I store rarely used cups and saucers I arrange the cups in a neat combination of four, handles inside each other.

We hang our mugs on hooks from a steel pan shelf. I hang them left-handed but so far right-handed members of the family have coped!

Glasses mostly rims up on glass shelves in cupboards, but some of the wide-rimmed cocktail glasses get put in rim down because they wouldn't fit in otherwise.

Cups? Not sure I even know what those are any more! 😂

Also if glasses are stored upside down any moisture trapped can make them lose freshness.

Rim up for all glasses and mugs, cups with saucers I put a couple kind of inside each other on their side on top of the saucers but don’t use those very often. Always took my own mug to work, the communal ones were disgusting & were never washed properly.

Are we there yet - we do have cockroaches in the UK, especially in hospitals and restaurants.

Ever since I lived in Sydney it's been rims down. I one pulled a cup off the shelf to find a cockroach in it. I know we don't have cockroaches but spiders would be nearly as bad.

Same as DannieRae I just open the cupboard and put them in.

A friend who owned a very posh China and glass shop told me that the rim is the weakest part and nothing should be balanced on it. So we have never stored glasses or cups face down.

Sorry, but I have never given this a thought! I could say more but will resist the temptation!

I just love the 'stacked in 3s with handles facing to the right' plays so well with my OCD.

It’s teaspoons in jars at communal places that get me, the bowl of the spoon facing upwards, so people lift them out with their fingers.

I always place them the other way up, with the handles being what you ‘handle’.

JackyB, I am with you completely on this! Wherever I have worked I have always kept my own cup, protected in a cotton bag, either in my desk drawer or handbag - since I was very young I have suffered with dreadful cold sores and one GP did claim that cups and drinking glasses were a prime source of cross infection.
I also have memories of grimey cupboard shelves with cups upturned for storage......YUK! I never minded taking turns in making the drinks but always washed every 'clean' cup or mug beforehand.
All our cups/mugs/glasses are stored 'rim up', after all, they are in cabinets etc.

I, too, while not a dirt obsessive, prefer not to have the rims on the shelf.

When it comes to glasses, in addition to the 'rims' thing, we were taught at catering college that if you stored wine glasses with stems on their rims there was a slight possibility that the weight of the 'foot' might shatter them.
