Covid tests

I have just read that Britain will not be going ahead with Covid testing of any people returning from China!! Unlike Italy, USA, Japan, Taiwan. Are we asking for trouble?, yes I realise that most of us are up to date with booster vaccinations.
Yesterday 50% of people that landed in Italy from china had Covid!!

I'd definitely wear a mask if I was ill and absolutely had to go out. Even with just a cold. Just seems fair to other people.

FarNorth Thu 05-Jan-23 16:15:25

Isn't the advice, so far, to wear a mask in public places if you are ill?
Surely that's not a terrible thing to ask, given that there is evidence it reduces the spread of infection.

If I go anywhere busy, which isn't often, I do use a mask although I dislike wearing them, in hopes it might protect me a bit.
It doesn't affect anyone else and it doesn't matter what they might think.

Aveline Thu 05-Jan-23 14:50:43

It seems that our patients are all tested on admission. Some are then found to have Covid but may or may not have symptoms. Infection control springs into action and depending on the number affected the ward may be closed to visitors. Of course some also have Flu or RSV.
I'm quite happy to wear a mask etc.

People in hospital are catching covid (if indeed they are) because they are vulnerable. Wearing masks cuts down the chances of catching or transmitting covid, and other things as well.

Its really not that hard to understand.

If you are in a hospital, or a heath centre or so on, wear your mask. Because the other people there are, by definition, vulnerable.

I've seen a lot of dodgy reasoning on GN today. It is something in the water?

CatsCatsCats Thu 05-Jan-23 14:17:31

People in hospitals are catching Covid because other patients don't wear them properly. Medical staff have to be in close contact with some of their patients and it only takes a short lapse for transmission to take place.

What absolute nonsense!

No, Aveline, they don't make a difference. Just think about it. Hospitals are one of the places where people are most likely to catch covid. And yet they are also the place where people have to wear masks - doctors, nurses, patients, visitors, health workers, etc. Why isn't all this mask-wearing stopping people from catching it, then??

How can any physical barrier not cut the risk of an airborne virus from being transmitted? It defies logic to think that it doesn't.

I can't say that I like wearing a mask and I didn't wear one over the summer, apart from a few indoor spaces, such as the hospital.

However, I've started wearing one again when I go into shops or travel by public transport. It doesn't bother me in the slightest if I'm the only person wearing a mask.

I don't quite know! Not many people seem to. I suppose I was so happy to stop having to wear them. Also I'm influenced by people who say they don't make a difference. So, I'm obviously just confused!

FarNorth Thu 05-Jan-23 12:02:27

So why don't you use a mask when you're on the bus Aveline?

Aveline Tue 03-Jan-23 11:33:24

I do have to wear a mask at the hospital. It's compulsory. However, I don't anywhere else although I sometimes wonder about the bus I take to get there. It's single decker, quite busy and usually pretty steamed up.

Sorry but I'm on a roll...

Do you go outside for a walk? Taking a chance.

Do you go out in the car? Taking a chance.

Do you have a gas cooker? Taking a chance.

If people want to wear masks, then of course they should. But there is always risk from many sources, wherever you go.

Hetty58 Tue 03-Jan-23 10:55:26

I'm wearing masks again - not because I'm ill - just in case I'm exposed to any infections, given the current state of the NHS.

It makes no logical sense at all to take any chances right now. With the kids returning to school, things will, inevitably, only get worse.

I don't need to remember anything volver. I can see for myself what it's like here.

And yet you can't see that preventing positive cases coming in from China will make no difference at all to the problem?

Personally I do not want to see a return of restrictions and for the record I am classed as vulnerable.

I have always said it’s my responsibility to protect myself, if I felt uneasy going anywhere I either wouldn’t go or if it was a necessity I would wear a suitable mask.

People are dropping like flies in my area, and taking a long time to recover which means that those working are out of the workforce. The situation is bad.

What are they dropping from, genuine question?

Where I am there are many cases of a flu like virus, which is taking a while to shift (not Covid as I know many who have tested and are negative)

Family members who have/had this virus have all said that it is/was ten times worse than when they had Covid (those who have had Covid that is) Others are taking anything from four to six weeks plus to recover fully.

Well fancy that.

Testing is not meant to prevent the arrival of Covid cases into the UK.

We really need to remember that we're not in 2020 any more, Toto.

Sparklefizz Tue 03-Jan-23 10:07:32

I have just heard on the News that if anyone arriving from China tests positive on arrival, they won't be required to isolate, and the testing is just for "surveillance purposes only".

Unbelievable!!!

Farzanah Sun 01-Jan-23 11:29:55

Yes true growstuff. I haven’t seen any good scientific evidence that wearing masks and social distancing make adults less immune.
There is growing evidence that social isolation, can affect people psychologically, which can exacerbate physical illness.
I will continue wearing my FFP mask in busy places.

Why everyone is ill is because no one has any natural immunity anymore! All this mask wearing and social distancing has left everyone open to everything

How do you work that one out? Wearing masks and social distancing don't make people less immune.

There is increasing evidence that being infected with Covid affects the immune system, which is a much more likely explanation for all the non-Covid infections people are experiencing.

Happy New Year from New Zealand everyone 🥂

If you were upset with my post JanJudge I will just reiterate that I explicitly said I don’t think people who can’t have the vaccine for medical reasons are not selfish, only those who refuse to have it because they think Bill Gates put a chip in it, or other spurious reasons. Since you had a very bad reaction to your first vaccine dose it’s clear that you shouldn’t have any further vaccines on medical grounds and therefore you are one of the people who need to rely on the rest of us to stay fully vaccinated in order to protect us all.
