Milk Tray - what happened?!

Dear Gransnetters, I was given a large box of Milk Tray at Christmas. I haven’t had one for decades so I was delighted and without parents to tell me not to eat them all at once I tore off the lid and began to eat ( well, gobble my gut be a truer description) but realised by about the sixth that not only did they all taste the same but that gorgeous Cadbury flavour was missing. My adult children helped in my taste test and they all thought the same. I appreciate that like Roses and Quality Street the quality and quantity have changed in order to keep them at a reasonable price point but these really were incredibly bland. Has anyone else found this? Or have we been spoiled by eating chocolate with a much higher percentage of cocoa solids than we had in the past?

Anyone know what happened to Thorntons toffee? Also all the Thorntons shops?

There’s one in the square below us. Still has chocolate gingers in bags, Thornton’s boxes of fudge and their toffee.

Cadbury chocolate is awful and has been for some time. I tend to eat only plain chocolate now between 70-85% , much better. Hotel Chocolat is good quality if a bit expensive

Oh thank you so much for all your comments, you’ve reassured me that I’m not losing my sense of taste but isn’t it sad? The taste of Cadbury’s was always so marvellous, wasn’t it?

You just can't get the delivery men any more, either, Kate22 🙂

There is a broad spectrum of legislations that EU food manufacturers have to follow throughout all production processes. The EU has developed standards that ensure food hygiene, animal health and welfare, plant health, and control contamination from external substances.

But Kraft shut down the Keynsham, Bristol factory, after promising not to, and set up production in Poland, which is in the EU.
🤔
In February 2010, following the takeover of Cadbury plc by Kraft Foods, the closure was confirmed to take place in 2011. Production was moved to a sister factory in Skarbimierz, Poland. Production of Cadbury products was however promised to not move entirely out of the United Kingdom. The factory closed on 31 March 2011, after which machinery was shipped to Poland

I think that Dairy Milk is made in the UK, in Birmingham.

Not that keen on chocolate apart from those with mint in them but husband js a chocoholic and he has remarked on how the usual suspects don't taste the same. I always buy a box of Lindt for part of his Xmas present and at the moment he is happily tucking in without a word of complaint. I wish they wouldn't mess with the tried and tested formulas of things as they onky lose customers in the long term.

Thanks Georgesgran👍🏻

Bought Nestle Dairy Box. Not impressed. Best chocolates to date are the ones in a Tesco box. Inexpensive too.

American ersatz recipes - someone else said - they have been taken over by Mondelez, Cadbury is a name only now. The Family as were have no control and it shows. There have been complaints and boxes withdrawn from sale. I'd be tempted to 'give feedback' on their website.

I had a gift of a small box of Cadbury Milk Tray there were 7 chocolates in the box. Out of the 7 l ate 3 the other 4 were salted caramel and fudge. What a waste of money. Whatever happened to Diary Box? But as you say chocolate is nothing like it used to taste.

My daughter discovered Friary chocolates. I can only speak for the dark chocolate but it’s yummy. I prefer it to Hotel C. As for Cadbury chocolate it’s awful. It all changed when it was sold off. I’d rather pay more for less and eat beautiful tasting chocolate.

Happy New Year to all

Oreo

Fleurpepper Nothing to do with the EU as Cadbury chocs have been sugary and greasy for a long time now when we were in the EU.

Well yes, but it has got much much worse recently- as most above say. The proportion of palm oil has increased hugely.

Georgesgran Sat 31-Dec-22 19:02:15

Thorntons fell victim to the Covid crisis and closed all 61 of their shops in March 2021, making 600 staff redundant Oreo. Some of their confectionary is still being produced and sold in many
Supermarkets.

No longer a fan of Cadbury’s at all now - greasy or waxy seems an appropriate description.

Wheniwasyourage. If you ever see any yogurt Ritter would you let me know please. I haven’t seen it for years .

One Christmas as a child I was given a huge box of Milk Tray with a picture of a thatched cottage on the box. I even shared them!

An American recipe now I believe.

We don’t eat Cadburys products any more.

We don’t either, greasy bland and all taste alike.

M&S are ok and also Beech which is a Lancashire firm I think.

Wheniwasyourage Sat 31-Dec-22 16:40:37

I like Ritter's Sport - lots of varieties and they all taste good!

Fleurpepper Sat 31-Dec-22 16:37:08

Previous regulations also ensured safety and strict controls on polutants, heavy metals and other possible contamination by chemicals. No such rules now- anything goes for British 'chocolate'

'There is a broad spectrum of legislations that EU food manufacturers have to follow throughout all production processes. The EU has developed standards that ensure food hygiene, animal health and welfare, plant health, and control contamination from external substances.

Safety is maintained even when the production materials come from outside of the EU. Imported goods must meet the same standards and go through the same checks as food produced within the Union.

hulahoop Sat 31-Dec-22 16:20:50

There has been a call back of milk tray something to do with them tasting of chemicals I think.
I got some handmade chocolate bought it's not very good .

Aveline Sat 31-Dec-22 16:02:44

Oh no! I used to love Milk Tray. They used to make a large bar consisting of a variety of their chocolates. It was a massive treat. Sadly gone.
Another of life's disappointments sad

Katyj Sat 31-Dec-22 15:54:50

We were given a box of milk tray too they were so disappointing, but even worse were the quality street they were truly horrible !

Blondiescot Sat 31-Dec-22 15:42:27

Aldi's chocolate is lovely - their Moser Roth varieties are really nice (especially the truffles), but even the cheap bars of dark, milk and white chocolate are good. I had to do some research for you all. I used them to make fudge to give as gifts this year and everyone raved about it.
