I'm quite new to Gransnet and I am enjoying reading and sometimes contributing to the forums. I do wonder why some discussions aren't deleted from site after a certain time. I opened a Welcome to New Users discussion and it was posted May 2020.

Chestnut I’ve noticed that threads tend to get overly long and repetitive when they are featured in the GN Newsletter email.
Then posters just tend to read the op alone, and then post their reply, not thinking that 7 pages in their thoughts have probably been previously aired by someone else

Chestnut Mon 02-Jan-23 14:07:00

Some of the old threads are very long, so all in all I feel there should be a expiry date for threads that whoever actually moderates the site abides by it and simply deletes threads over the agreed age or length.

As stated, I don't agree with deleting old threads, but I do agree some are much too long. The OP should have the ability to close the thread when they consider a query has been answered to their satisfaction or enough replies have been received. For anyone who has been following a thread it can be annoying when people start repeating the same things over and over because the thread is so long and they haven't read it all. I'm sure we've all done it, but that is why the OP should be able to close the thread.

I’ll pm you wink

No, the BF saga drama is on here! I think it's someone writing a book. The threads always get deleted

grin @ reddit forum. What do they post about?

FannyCornforth Mon 02-Jan-23 13:36:59

Ha ha, I know exactly what you mean about using the term ‘some people’ grin
I’ve been accused of being a journalist on here before, amongst other things.
Barely a day goes by without me being called something or other 🙄

Is the boyfriend saga on MN?
I haven’t been on there for ages.
But I am on a Reddit forum which is about MN 😆

JaneJudge Mon 02-Jan-23 13:25:00

I begrudge having to write 'some people' but I think 'some people' are journos aren't they, on both sites? I suppose it's the nature of it

The woman with the ongoing boyfriend saga springs to mind

The Daily Mail pay for the stories they think might be interesting.

Do they now! shock
I thought that they started some of the threads too, to get the sort of thing they were after

so they aren't just lifted?

so Mumsnet/Gransnet own the copyright?

I must admit now that I don't know much at all about copyright laws grin it would just explain why old threads aren't deleted

Usually, these old threads that pop up again, are ones we already have commented upon, so we don't have anything new to add. A case in point was "The worst Christmas gift ever".

Another point is that it can be saddening suddenly to see the name of one of the posters who has died since the thread was originally posted.

Some of the old threads are very long, so all in all I feel there should be a expiry date for threads that whoever actually moderates the site abides by it and simply deletes threads over the agreed age or length.

If the topic is still relevant, be sure someone will start a new thread and be welcome to do so, as it is easier to comment usefully on a thread that is five pages long than one that is at least twice that lenght.

FannyCornforth Mon 02-Jan-23 13:11:44

Sorry Jane, I thought that it might be something specific.
Yes, they can use stuff (I didn’t know there were books!) but I don’t think that they can stop anyone else from using it either

I think a lot of threads have been deleted recently. I've done searches and although they're listed, they're marked as Moooved.

This depends on your page settings.

JaneJudge Mon 02-Jan-23 13:05:37

I might be wrong btw!

JaneJudge Mon 02-Jan-23 13:05:06

I ask because I don't know the answer. I was sure they did on mumsnet as they could use your posts in the books

FannyCornforth Mon 02-Jan-23 13:00:44

Why do you ask Jane?
Personally, I don’t think that they do own the rights to stuff, otherwise the Daily Mail wouldn’t be able to reprint stuff.
I’m not sure though

JaneJudge Mon 02-Jan-23 12:57:00

Gransnet/Mumsnet own the copyright to everything you post here

don't they? confused

I can never open any old threads, even newly old if you get me it always says Moooved with a cow picture, it amazes me how people can resurrect old threads

I’ve never, ever had that, or indeed the zombie thread warning that Maw mentioned.

I’m always on the mobile site. Could it be something to do with that?

I agree with Chestnut that some old threads are very interesting/ useful.
One that springs to mind is the Orange Palms one.
People across the globe must Google the strange hued hand phenomenon- and the thread pops up.

But the downside are the scam resurrected ones.
Especially when they involve posters who are no longer with us.
Also when people are offering well thought through and heartfelt advice to a poster who won’t see it, or whose problem no longer exists.

What annoys me is that under threads 'I'm on' it only has 19 threads and I might want to go back to an older thread. I remember that I was the very first person to start a thread about COVID back in early 2020. How fascinating to read that thread now. I'll try and find it.

Found it! Here is the very first thread on covid from Jan 2020:
www.gransnet.com/forums/news_and_politics/1272322-Coronavirus-Testing
I was getting my knickers in a twist because people were already travelling into the UK from Wuhan.

Grannybags Mon 02-Jan-23 12:49:18

I've been happily reading a thread until I saw that I had already posted on it. I hadn't noticed it was four years old!

fancythat Mon 02-Jan-23 12:44:09

I posted on that thread as joined today.
It still seemed to be running?

Looks like this

There is also, if I remember correctly, a “Zombie thread warning” and suggestion you might prefer to start a new thread instead of perpetuating an old one,
