Swear words in online forums

What I can't understand is why the same f word is used as a noun, adjective, adverb, subject, object, when there are so many other words in the dictionary. Boring!

Bloody hell. I'm not swearing, just using swear words that have nothing to do with bodies.
Bloody hell hardly qualifies as swearing compared to the others, and is often in general use even by people who don't really swear!

Not on an online forum but I didn't use any asterisks when I fell over on the pavement today, just full-blooded AngloSaxon !

Let's face it, all swear words are either body parts or body functions. Apart from the worst one of all (as I said) which is mother**** which to me is just unspeakable but is heard quite casually in American movies. It makes me cringe and why they think it's acceptable is beyond me.

Maybe someone from the USA can explain why that word is deemed suitable in movies?

I worked in a young offenders institution for 11 years, there is no swear words I have not heard. The only one I truly object to is C* . When I used to hear it used in the prison I would ask the offender or prison officer
why they were calling me or who ever, a Vagina???? I honestly believe half of them did not even realise what the word means. It certainly started a few conversations...

'Shit' has become vey common, if TV films are any indication. When 'shit' is a metaphor for personal baggage of belongings or ideas it's a worthy metaphor, as baggage is subjective and can be dispensed with, same as faecal matter.

'Cunt' is often unpleasant as when it's a swear word it's always linked to sexist attitude, even when the user is unaware of the link.

Personally , and despite I'm what most believers would call an atheist, I almost shudder when the name of God is casually used as a swear word.

Fair enough - but surely if one's faith is so strong, it's hardly going to be shaken by someone using blasphemy. If I remember rightly, this was one of the reasons I used to get into trouble at Sunday School, for questioning this type of belief.

Not a fan of swearing. I do it sometimes in the company of my DH (or someone I'm really close to) if I'm very upset. I don't think it's an indication particularly of being intelligent or creative. Some of the most intelligent and creative people that I know don't swear at all. Actually, I think people who swear a lot are just lazy. They're too lazy to use language that is inoffensive, or more descriptive or more uplifting. The English language is so rich, the words are so fascinating, why dilute it with words that are in the lower echelon of aesthetics? However, I will say some British swear words make me laugh, and I think they're so interesting, whereas American swear words are pretty much just vulgar. Frankly, when someone uses a lot of swear words, I lose interest in what they're saying. My eyes just glaze over.

Dickens The ads ARE tailored on Google, and on any site which has opted into Googles ad scheme, unless you specifically select that you don't want tailored ads. They can scan the site page for mentions of - well, anything - and then place a relevant ad from one of their customers on the selling side. Gransnet has obviously opted in, to get some revenue from the site without actually selling ad space individually.

It is possible to stop the tailored ads, but you have to keep up your vigilance and check your settings frequently.

I think the strangest thing is when people type, "G*d"... I had it explained to me once but didn't understand the reasoning.

I believe ads are 'tailored' sometimes. I was looking for information on adjustable beds the other day, and now I keep seeing adverts for them.

BTW, M&S do some rather nice Mushroom Arancini!
