Goodness knows why, but I suddenly had this on the brain the other day, when visiting dd and family. Found the Children’s Favourites (1956 Mandy Miller) version on good old YouTube - Gdcs thoroughly enjoyed it - I had them merrily singing along in the bath!

I sing a lot of the old songs including this one to my GS he loves them too.
From my own childhood I remember a song that had the words I am a mole and I live in a hole. Can anyone enlighten any further on that one?

Who can remember the hilarious Stanley Holloway song about little Albert who was eaten by a lion at a zoo ?
“An’ ‘im in’ his Sunday best too”!

Isn’t Nellie the Elephant the right rhythm for CPR?!

Yes, wasn't Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees another one?

Thanks for all the reminders. I can still sing Nellie the Elephant, but my favourite was the toothbrush song.

Callistemon21 Mon 09-Jan-23 11:19:07

Oh dear, I shall have Nellie the Elephant and her trunk as an ear worm today now 🐘 😄

Yes, JackyB, it’s in what used to be called Burma.
IIRC there’s an old song called ‘The Road to Mandalay’.

Ken Dodd used to sing "On the road to Mandalay", all dressed up in army tropical uniform with one of those women's false legs out of shop windows hanging down his back. It's in Myanmar.
I think there might even be a Kipling poem about it.
I always thought it sounded so romantic until when older I realised my uncle's brother is buried there in a WW2 war grave

"There's a little yellow idol to the west of Katmandu" (it might be east)
that's how it starts
"You're a better man than I am Gungadin" Think that's how it ends- Kipling.
Love Nellie the Elephant.

My GCs for some reason love "Any Old Iron"

"When father papered the parlour"
And (but I change the words a bit) "Ye cannae shove yer granny off a bus"
Second verse should be "Ye can shove yer other granny off a bus" -reason "cos she's yer daddy's mummy" (and that's me!!!)

I didn't like Sparky. It scared me. I can remember my sister in tears over Puff The Magic Dragon.

I remember all these songs, mainly from Childrens' Favourites and I, too, was taught to do CPR to 'Nellie the Elephant'.

Does anyone else remember the Toy Dolls' version of 'Nellie the Elephant' ? My DS was a fan and I later did a Japanese course with one of the Toy Dolls (they were popular in Japan, I believe) and managed to get DS a signed photo od the n=band members.

Correction - 'signed photo of the band members' (too many small keys for my fingers!!)

Was it Frank Ifield and the mouse with clogs who did a dance in old Amsterdam?

Yammy Mon 09-Jan-23 14:44:18

I used to sing"All the nice girls love a sailor", because my dad had been in the Navy. I realise now far too old a song for a little girl. Also one by Anne Shelton? "Sailor stop your roaming". He certainly had I was born in 1950 he came home in 1946.

I didn't like Sparky either and always found Puff The Magic Dragon heartbreaking at the end!
