Goodness knows why, but I suddenly had this on the brain the other day, when visiting dd and family. Found the Children’s Favourites (1956 Mandy Miller) version on good old YouTube - Gdcs thoroughly enjoyed it - I had them merrily singing along in the bath!

I can remember collecting paper golliwogs too. I still have a fondness for Robertson’s marmalade.
Does anyone remember dancing to “Nellie the Elephant”? blush

So many memories. gala I really miss our singing group from when we were in Uk. At a party, singing , as you do , half a dozen or more of us were dragooned in the choir. I’d never sung with a group before in my life. I never had as much fun either.

Ed ‘Stewpot’ Stewart used to do a children’s show on Radio One back in the 60s, I think. I do remember many a classic for kids on there. Nellie the Elephant was one of them! 🐘😍

I had some books of traditional children’s songs when my children were little and often used to sing them while playing the piano. They would join in with the singing and playing percussion instruments we had. Nellie the Elephant was a great favourite.

I had a Gollywog and Robertson’s jam enamel gollywog badge Yammy. Different days, just toys with no message to me as a child. Thankfully, times have changed.

I'm glad someone else remembers, I think my gran collected the paper gollys for me.
I also remember from school a story the teacher used to read us called "Epomemandas", he was a little black boy who went to the river with gourds to collect water somewhere in Africa. They did not seem wrong to me either I changed Enochs name to something else probably Sheeba all my dolls were called it after the Queen of Sheba I heard about in Chapel.

I remember Nellie the Elephant and Puff the Magic Dragon well. Also remember my grandad singing Arthur Askey’s Bee song when we’re very small. I always enjoyed the song at the start of Tingha & Tucker-Boomerang Boomerang this is our song…

Puff the Magic Dragon made me cry too - so sad that he was left friendless.
The song I loved was 'My Grandfather's clock'; I sang that often as a child, marching around to 'Ninety years without slumbering, tick tock tick tock, his life's seconds numbering, tick tock tick tock' - I had forgotten all about it, and then heard it just a few years ago, and it brought tears. Where did that little girl go? Lovely to read this thread.

Does anyone remember a little mouse with clogs on .where ,there on the stair right there
It was one of the songs we always sang with dad when going out in the car .

I was singing that the other day!
@Glorianny; Gunga Din was also a poem by Kipling, but not the same one as Mandalay. The other poem was "The Green Eye of the Little Yellow God" by J Milton Hayes. "There's a green eyed yellow idol to the north of Kathmandu"

A lot of these songs are sung by our singing group for non singers. I think we are 'comfortable' singing these as they are so familiar from our childhood. And you've all reminded of many more we can add to our repertoire to increase our confidence.

Also recall my dad had a Stanley Baxter LP which I enjoyed with him. With tracks like Brown Boots and With her head tucked Underneath her arm.

I had Dilly Dilly -Oscar feather, catch a bogey by the sea eeeeee.

Hellogirl1 Wed 11-Jan-23 15:00:42

The Little Blue Man was sung by Petula Clark, I used to feel so sad for him.

GrannyZoom Wed 11-Jan-23 14:57:51

OOh how you have all brought back some fond memories. I hadn't thought of these wonderful lyrics for donkeys years.
Now I can't stop humming Little Boxes, help!!

Kate1949 Wed 11-Jan-23 14:42:51

I remember this ine.

20 tiny fingers
20 tiny toes
2 angel faces each with a turned up nose.
One looks like mommy with a cute little curl on top
And the other one's got a big bald spot exactly like his pop.

Your Muffin membership card is so sweet Chestnut. I had no idea either about the muffin club or badge.
Losing your treasured badge in such circumstances would understandably be very upsetting when you were a child. 😥

I love you, I love you said the little green man !!
Can’t remember who sang it but my little granddaughter used to love me singing it to her.

I used to be so upset when he was pushed off a rooftop in town and said "I don't wub you any more!" 😢

Grannybags Wed 11-Jan-23 14:21:03

On top of spaghetti all covered in cheese
I lost my poor meatball when somebody sneezed
It rolled off the table and on to the floor
And then my poor meatball rolled out of the door

I think it went something like this!

was the next line?
I lost my poor meatball all covered in Cheese.
I can't remember anymore.
There was also a song about Bisto
"We are the Bisto boys and girls", all the boys in our town called the carts made out of old pram wheels "Bisto,s
Shouldn't admit it but I had a Glliwog badge from collecting paper golliwogs out of jars of jam. Also, a very radical aunt for those days bought me a black doll, she put a tag on it saying"My name is Enoch", after Enoch Powells rivers of blood speech

homefarm Wed 11-Jan-23 14:12:24

Quaver22 Wed 11-Jan-23 14:02:59

I remember listening to many of those songs with ‘Uncle Mac’ on the radio on Saturday mornings in the 50s . We didn’t have a tv then.
My favourite was The Laughing Policeman .
