I remember listening to many of those songs with ‘Uncle Mac’ on the radio on Saturday mornings in the 50s . We didn’t have a tv then.
My favourite was The Laughing Policeman .

Also recall my dad had a Stanley Baxter LP which I enjoyed with him. With tracks like Brown Boots and With her head tucked Underneath her arm.

A lot of these songs are sung by our singing group for non singers. I think we are 'comfortable' singing these as they are so familiar from our childhood. And you've all reminded of many more we can add to our repertoire to increase our confidence.

@Glorianny; Gunga Din was also a poem by Kipling, but not the same one as Mandalay. The other poem was "The Green Eye of the Little Yellow God" by J Milton Hayes. "There's a green eyed yellow idol to the north of Kathmandu"

The song I loved was 'My Grandfather's clock'; I sang that often as a child, marching around to 'Ninety years without slumbering, tick tock tick tock, his life's seconds numbering, tick tock tick tock' - I had forgotten all about it, and then heard it just a few years ago, and it brought tears. Where did that little girl go? Lovely to read this thread.

I remember Nellie the Elephant and Puff the Magic Dragon well. Also remember my grandad singing Arthur Askey’s Bee song when we’re very small. I always enjoyed the song at the start of Tingha & Tucker-Boomerang Boomerang this is our song…

I'm glad someone else remembers, I think my gran collected the paper gollys for me.
I also remember from school a story the teacher used to read us called "Epomemandas", he was a little black boy who went to the river with gourds to collect water somewhere in Africa. They did not seem wrong to me either I changed Enochs name to something else probably Sheeba all my dolls were called it after the Queen of Sheba I heard about in Chapel.

I had some books of traditional children’s songs when my children were little and often used to sing them while playing the piano. They would join in with the singing and playing percussion instruments we had. Nellie the Elephant was a great favourite.

Ed ‘Stewpot’ Stewart used to do a children’s show on Radio One back in the 60s, I think. I do remember many a classic for kids on there. Nellie the Elephant was one of them! 🐘😍

So many memories. gala I really miss our singing group from when we were in Uk. At a party, singing , as you do , half a dozen or more of us were dragooned in the choir. I’d never sung with a group before in my life. I never had as much fun either.
