Carol Vorderman’s Very Modern Love Life

Hot on the heels of Prince Harry oversharing intimate details of his life we now have Carol Vorderman appearing on 2 daytime programmes letting the public know how free she feels since deciding she would not have just one male relationship in her life, but 5 “special friends” . (‘Friends with benefits’ in other words).

We discuss other TV revelations on GN and I wonder what do you think of this one?

I wouldn't go searching for Amanda Holden on telly, Gagajo but I did notice her knocking down a wall with a sledgehammer the other week - very impressive! Alan Carr was watching in admiration
And Carol's maths lessons and books for children were very good.

It's a pity they feel the need to change themselves beyond recognition.

Liz Hurley is famous for being famous I think 😃

I thought Liz Hurley was famous for a safety pin dress (and being "friendly" with Hugh Grant)

She reminds me very much of that other woman I can't bear, Amanda Holden. Or Liz Hurley. All famous for lolling about in bikinis.

Thanks Glorianny

I wouldn't take a 90% pay cut either - did they ask everyone else to do the same?
I just checked and she was on a salary of £1.5 million a year so that does seem very high indeed, particularly as this was 15 years ago.

But didn't she get the push from "Countdown" because she was seen as "too old" and was replaced by a younger model?

I don't know but, if so , QED.
The pressure on women in the media to remain looking young and beautiful, never mind if they're good at their job or not.

Just Googled it and apparently she was one of the highest paid women in TV. They asked her to take a 90% cut in wages and she refused and left.
I suppose she is another victim of the glass ceiling in the media that limits women's pay

Can't blame her for that. I wouldn't have taken a 90% cut in wages. If they'd decided to relaunch with new people after Richard died it would have been one thing, but asking her to stay on for less money is an insult!

It's easy to say from the sidelines, but she may have been better advised to have something lined up before she left though. Finding a niche when her star was still high would have made that easier, but hubris often gets celebrities in the end.

Well its getting better but... very long way to go.

Just thinking of presenters/newsreaders you can be very wrinkly and old as long as you are "distinguished looking" if you are a bloke.

Some exceptional women reporting from say places like Ukraine don't fit the stereotype and glad to see it, also in comedy, a bit in sport tho in sport they always seem to find an attractive woman it doesn't matter about the blokes. Or "Experts" consulted nowadays you can see older academics who don't look glam at all.

She has learnt that for women there is one easy and guaranteed route to fame and fortune.

ExperiencedNotOld Tue 24-Jan-23 12:04:56

There’s something about Carol Vorderman that makes me swing between ‘looking good for her age’ and ‘oh for goodness sake act your age’. She’s looking less good now (Botox!) and is definitely verging on being rather sad now.

I think Carol was offered a new Countdown contract with much less money. She declined it and walked away.

Forsythia Tue 24-Jan-23 11:54:01

She teaches maths online to children……this is mainly aimed at KS2 up to age 11. All the children of that age who I have taught over the years would not be thinking of plastic surgery. Just my opinion. They would be unlikely, in my opinion, to be thinking about Botox, plastic surgery and role models while they are struggling with learning their maths. No doubt somebody will say I’m wrong but I know this age group.

Grantanow Tue 24-Jan-23 11:38:57

Just another 'celebrity' talking herself up - probably to help book sales or something similar.

I’m not sure young teenage girls would relate to Carol Vorderman. I don’t think you need worry about that Callistemon. They’d be more interested in - possibly- Adele, Rita Ora, Katie Price etc.

hmm
She teaches Maths online to children (and very well too)

It would never be for me, I know very few women who can detach themselves and separate sex and real love, I just see pain ahead for her unless she is one of the. few, but not distasteful as such,

but what would we call a bloke in similar situation? They are more likely to be able to not engage the heart.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 24-Jan-23 11:27:59

I’d find this equally distasteful in a man Wyllow.

I've realised something about Gransnet this week.

Its just a place where women feel entitled to call other women names, and feel superior to them. Then defend it by saying they asked for it.

What a disappointment.

Only this week?? I don't usually post on the B&G threads, but I do read them occasionally. I think if a gran heard someone saying these things about her DD or GD she would be furious, and rightly so.

Wyllow3 Tue 24-Jan-23 10:55:51

...and I think it matters greatly that its unlikely we'd have this debate if it were a man or use pejorative terms. Whatever the origin of slapper, just check out the urban dictionary.

Wyllow3 Tue 24-Jan-23 10:52:57

Callistemon21

It's the messages they are sending out to younger, impressionable women and girls in their teens!!

Sorry. I will go now.

You don't need to go as I don't think that young women will particularly care or be affected in any bad way.

At least they get to know its OK for older women to A) have sex and B) enjoy sex.

volver Tue 24-Jan-23 10:51:02

Good lord.

Yammy Tue 24-Jan-23 10:49:45

As Callistemon says is she looking after herself in the long term? What kind of example is she setting to young women, Many young women who would be beautiful in their own right are making themselves look like artificial dolls because they think it is the modern thing to do. You have to ask what will happen to their bodies years down the line.
As for being questioned about calling her a "slapper ", I think if you look in the dictionary you will find the definition to be of Jewish origin schlepper, an older woman who has multiple partners, or the sound of flesh being slapped and even prostitute which I did not say.
I was asked about what I would call a man, the answers are multiple and would agree not as degrading as what is used for a woman.
We then have to ask why has a degrading term not evolved. Jack the lad certainly sounds better or he likes his women, also question why until recent years has it been acceptable for a man to be regarded in this way and not a woman.
That is another debate completely removed from the Carol Voderman one that is current.
Perhaps a theme for another Stream in the future.

bluebird243 Tue 24-Jan-23 10:47:02

CV: not dignified, not classy, attention seeking like the majority of 'celebrities'. To talk about one's private life, apart from bragging is juvenile and crass. Surely we learn this as we mature.

I see a woman terrified of aging, alarmed when not in the public eye. I think it's sad and she could have done so much more with her intelligence than the path she has chosen. She is not a good role model by advocating all the procedures going in order to be more 'beautiful'. It's ridiculous, she was ok before.

But part of being and relishing being in the public eye is to generate people's reactions and opinions. Stay quiet if you want to avoid them.

Sago Tue 24-Jan-23 10:42:31

I’m sure her two children are delighted.

Glorianny Tue 24-Jan-23 10:41:55

Don't particularly like her.
But didn't she get the push from "Countdown" because she was seen as "too old" and was replaced by a younger model?
That must be depressing and you might turn to surgical help.

If she knows 5 men who are reasonably attractive and caring, are not involved with someone else, don't want to tell you all about their ex and what a bitch she was, or how much they miss their mother, and are heterosexual then good luck to her. In my experience there aren't that many around.

Kate1949 Tue 24-Jan-23 10:35:22

I believe Carol has plenty of work. She has a radio show, and a blog. She appears on This Morning giving advice on people's love lives and also does the paper review. She writes maths books.
