Today's Grauniad has an interview with Jane Goodall, who is definite one of mine.

Who are yours?

Amalegra Tue 21-Feb-23 15:08:37

My family of course (most of the time…!)
Sir Michael Palin-loved him since his Python days and his travel shows are now a delight!
Stephen Fry-not everyone’s cup of tea, I know, but his intellect amazes me (and he can be very funny!).
Professor Noel Fitzpatrick aka the Supervet. In his books as well as on TV he comes over as a hugely compassionate man who has dedicated his life to our animal friends.
Simon Seborg Montefiore- fantastic historian. His book are amazing as are his TV shows. His latest book ‘The World’ is a towering achievement.
Delia Smith and Mary Berry- thank heavens for their good advice and fool proof recipes over the years! Lovely ladies too.

My favourite humans are definitely the everyday humans that I see going out of their way to be kind and considerate. I don’t tend to hold up famous people as favourites.

Jeremy Paxman. Once a formidable journalist and interviewer, now fighting against Parkinsons Disease.

At the moment family and then Joe Biden for showing Putin what he thinks of him and is not to be intimidated.

BeneathTheHowlingStars Tue 21-Feb-23 14:28:09

Professor David Wilson. I could listen to him talk for hours and hours.

Paul O'Grady, Tom Hardy and others who use their celebrity status to shout out about animal rescues centres and the importance of adopting.

Welbeck, I honestly can't remember what JG spoke about. I think we all switched off. But I do remember everyone being very disappointed as we had expected her to be so interesting.

I love and admire all my family, definitely some of my favourite humans. (do not always like them though🤣)

I have lots of acquaintances who I like and get on with along with a handful of close friends who I love and admire and it’s these that definitely come under my favourite human beings umbrella along with my family.

The personalities we see/hear of in the media only show their public persona, what they are like behind closed doors when not working we shall never truly know unless we know them personally.

hollysteers Sun 19-Feb-23 13:02:56

She’s passed now, but my favourite person (and heroine) apart from family, is Sister Wendy, humble and inspiring.

MayBee70 Sun 19-Feb-23 12:58:20

I think it’s quite difficult these days for someone in the public eye to hide their true personality (there are exceptions that seem to fool people but I’d better not name names). Which is why I like to think that I do actually know the people I admire more so than I would have done pre social media. Eg I really liked ( actually had a crush on)an author whose books I used to read). But, because of tweeting etc I’ve realised he’s not a very nice person by my ( political) standards. But maybe I’m fooling myself and being fooled.

Bellasnana Sun 19-Feb-23 12:30:08

Family of course, but in the public eye I’d have to say Rafael Nadal who seems to be a truly good person.

Callistemon21 Sun 19-Feb-23 11:59:56

LadyHonoriaDedlock
Perhaps the heading should be "People I most admire"!

Of course family and friends are our favourites but I did realise what you meant. 😀
But, as a discussion, that won't take us far.

I'll add Brian May to the list of people I admire.

timetogo2016 Sun 19-Feb-23 11:55:58

Family first,then friends.

Skydancer Sun 19-Feb-23 11:54:46

henetha agree about King Charles. Also David Attenborough, Chris Packham, Brian May and anyone who speaks up for nature.

annodomini Sun 19-Feb-23 11:51:38

I couldn't claim as favourite someone I don't know personally. I would have to mention my family and friends. I would never favour one son or grandchild above the rest and, happily, can include my sons' parners.

MayBee70 Sun 19-Feb-23 11:50:30

Deborah Meaden. I’ve never watched Dragons Den but over the last few years I’ve really come to like and respect her. And Hayley Campbell who’s on my current favourite podcast Must Watch. I just agree with everything she talks about, even down to the fact that she has a murder if crows in her garden that she feeds. And ( again from podcasts) Melvyn Bragg, Greg Jenner and Rory Stewart. David Attenborough of course.

ParlorGames Sun 19-Feb-23 11:19:59

All four of my grandchildren.......my heart swells when I think of them, such beautiful human beings.

Callistemon21 Sun 19-Feb-23 11:16:44

Jane Goodall is the world expert on Chimpanzees and set up a conservation institute.
She still tours, giving lectures encouraging people to make the world a better place.
Yes, I will include Jane Goodall on my list of very favourite people.

pascal30 Sun 19-Feb-23 11:11:33

BlueBelle

Afraid I don’t know Jane Goodall
Not sure I have any famous favourite people apart fromNelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu who are both long gone

I second Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, also Thich Nhat Hahn and Dalai Lama (only one now alive sadly)

henetha Sun 19-Feb-23 10:23:15

Family of course, but then definitely David Attenborough and Chris Packham. Anyone who teaches me about nature.
And King Charles, a much maligned man in spite of all the good he has tried to do.
A woman I admire is Dolly Parton for her strength of character and philanthropy. Also Jane Fonda.
Zelensky right now for his determination to stand up to the bully.

BigBertha1 Sun 19-Feb-23 07:42:09

Family of course and Sir David but also the King and Queen, Prince and Princess of Wales and family, Joanna Lumley but although I admire many musicians and actors not necessarily favourite persons.

Callistemon21 Sat 18-Feb-23 23:19:59

Apart from family, of course, then:
Of those still with us Sir David Attenborough, Brian Cox and yes, Bob Mortimer is a favourite too.

All men 🤔

Kate1949 Sat 18-Feb-23 22:45:26

My husband and family. With a special mention to my brother who has been to hell in a handcart and is still smiling.
