Lent, what if anything are you giving up?

I am determined to not swear for at least the duration and hopefully once the habit has been broken continue. Limiting my time on GN should help with this 🤣

I am also giving up biscuits, crisps and the small amount of chocolate I consume.

(Did think of giving up alcohol, but unfortunately we have multiple family celebrations and nights out planned so I intend to limit as opposed to abstain)

It would be life changingly marvellous to give up worrying.
I shall give it a go

This sounds good to me!

I've recently found that I need to give up eating gluten so that is quite enough sacrifice for the time being...

A rolling programme of "c".

Week 1 crisps, week 2 as week one but add in chocolate, week 3 as 1 & 2 but add in chips, week 4, as before but add in bed-time cocoa, week 5 as before but add in cookies, week 6 as before but add in cappuchino.

Have done it before with the goodies in different order and it is fun. Plus my botty bags are a tad looser by the time Easter arrives.

I’m sure the OP posted this looking for humerous replies.
Keeping things light, I might give up still wine and stick to fizzy for a few weeks!

Oh, good idea, Georgesgran
I was going to give up wine but there's a meeting tonight and someone is bringing Prosecco.
Giving up still wine sounds like a plan 😁🥂

Same here Fanny, I'm sick of waking at 6 a.m. and things rolling around in my head, I have got to stop worrying.
Do something about my weight so I suppose that is certain foods.
We had family at the weekend and was told by DD she had never heard me so grumpy and sarcastic, not with them but with life in general.
I'm turning into a grumpy gran or as she put it a grumpy old git. It is with worrying.

I advise giving up voting Tory and not just for Lent.

You’re a Champion Worrier you say NotTooOld. I once went into work saying ‘I’m a bit worried - I’ve got nothing to worry about’

Wine- in the week! I’ll be well squiffy on a weekend though 😉🤣

As said Doodle a lighthearted thread.🙂
That made me laugh GG13 🤣

Actually Doodle I’m giving up anchovies in sacrifice to Belisama, the goddess of the river next to which my house is built. I’m not religious but I’m not taking any chances. An angry river goddess would not be a good neighbour.

Doodle Tue 21-Feb-23 19:13:07

I can’t understand why anyone who isn’t religious would give up anything for lent. In fact if you are not religious you are not giving up things for lent you are giving them up for other reasons.

Kitty 👍

GrannyGravy13 Tue 21-Feb-23 19:02:14

For fun I have just put on the family WhatsApp that DH and I are giving up babysitting/day care for lent, it didn’t go down well 🤣

(That’s one thing neither of us has the willpower to give up ❤️💙)

kittylester Tue 21-Feb-23 18:59:02

I'm with batty.

Witzend Tue 21-Feb-23 18:47:58

Because I enjoy it so much, I’m thinking of giving up housework.
(And if you believe that….)

ParlorGames Tue 21-Feb-23 18:45:17

Tripe.............I am giving up tripe. It won't be difficult because I don't eat it smile

Patsy70 Tue 21-Feb-23 18:32:23

No, I won’t be giving up anything, like most on this thread. I really should give up the wine, but it’s one of my pleasures in life, so I won’t be! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Iam64 Tue 21-Feb-23 18:28:01

That’s a plan GrannyGravy13. There’s one thing I wouldn’t test my ability for a bit of discipline on, that’s gravy. My mum taught me to make onion gravy, it’s something my daughters learned from me and now make well themselves. Good gravy makes a meal, poor gravy ruins it.

I’m curious about the extent it’s linked to Christianity. Obviously,I know why this is but I like the idea of some self discipline, despite not being particularly good at it. I’ve never been on a diet. My weight has been the same for about 15 years which I put down to not having seconds or eating desert / chocolates/biscuits every day. A glass of wine about 6.30 - routine. Probably wicked self indulgence

We were meant to be in Koln for Rosenmontag and Karnavel. Alas, business calls. Really? We're giving up a fun holiday plus the items we've chosen to abstain from until Easter. Good lesson, I'd guess.

Definitely meant to be humorous.

I could give up still wine for fizzy 🍾

NotTooOld Tue 21-Feb-23 18:19:04

I'm with the Worriers but I've given myself capital letters as I am a Champion Worrier. Anyone have a solution? To worrying, that is. I'd love to know. If I gave up worrying I would probably be dead so that's not much of a solution. Now I'm worrying about being dead..................confused

Urmstongran Tue 21-Feb-23 18:10:58

I’m a Humanist so the idea of Lent holds no meaning for me.

But the idea of occasionally ‘doing without using willpower’ is supposedly good for us. It teaches us to have inner strength for times when we may need it.

Just find the whole thing absolutely pointless unless folk go out volunteering and make a positive difference to other folks lives.

Daddima Tue 21-Feb-23 15:47:16

I always gave up alcohol for Lent ( just to prove I could!), but my intake nowadays is so small, it’s not worth it. I’m trying to think of something which I could do which would benefit someone else.
