Traditional home cooked food at both sets of Grandparents, lots of home made cakes, pies, chutneys and pickles.

My parents were publicans with restaurants and bar food, so at home it was smoked salmon sandwiches, ploughman’s etc. along with curries, variety of pasta dishes or whatever was on the menu that day.

Food was plain but nutritious. Lots of home grown fruit and veg. We had a roast at the weekend mostly lamb as chicken was too expensive.
Mum used to have a baking day once a week and we had cakes and pies for puddings.
I don't think there were many overweight children in 40s and 50s. We did spend most of our free time running around and I think meals were smaller then.

My mum was an adventurous cook. She had foreign friends and would get recipes from them. Moussaka, goulash, curries. She bought olive oil for cooking when it had to be bought from the chemist.

We did also have great desserts tho. I remember in particular a baked jam roly poly. Heaven!

My grandchildren eat a lot of sushi, Mexican food or all sorts, curries, souvlakis, kimchi etc and think nothing of it but I had never even heard of those foods when I was young. We had a pretty boring diet except for I reckon the desserts were good then. They didn’t even have hamburgers when I was really young and as for chicken - that was for Christmas if you were lucky.
