Hello
I’m surprised that this hasn’t been discussed already.
So, have you (ahem) inhaled?
And do you think that it’s beneficial to one’s mental health?

I’ll start. Yes and A Big Fat N

Of course there will be private areas of their lives - their sex lives for instance. I know my son well enough to know that he didn’t experiment with drugs. I have always known his views on those who do.

I take co-codamol. I'd be astonished if it contains cannabis. It's paracetamol and codeine isn't it.

your liver converts codeine into morphine
there are so many posts on this thread since I last posted that i don;t know why you've asked grin

It depends on whether your relationship with your children is open and casual enough for them to mention their own drug use/non drug use, in passing, when talking about some aspect of drug use more generally.

The areas of their children's lives parents may not know about, will vary from family to family. For some drug use will be off bounds, in others it won't. Children of vegans, probably would not admit that they meat, but might be willing to talk about drug usage.

My son had a girlfriend from hell and after the relationship ended her house burned down. We were discussing it with my son and he wondered whether something had gone wrong when she was on Ket (ketamine). We were astonished and I asked him if he knew she took it when they were together and if he had seen a future with her if she was so daft. He said that although he can't see why anybody would risk themselves, he's find it incredibly difficult to find a girlfriend if he ruled them out based on recreational drugs. I think that is very sad.
My older son was on a music performance course and his lecturers smoked cannabis quite openly in front of the students when they were performing. We were horrified and really relieved when my son decided against performing as a career and found a wife who was strictly anti-drugs! He has since talked about his occasional cannabis use and it surprised me because I watched him like a hawk. It just goes to show you just can't tell.

I don't think I was really asking, Jane Judge. Just amazed that anyone would think it contained cannabis. grin
Yes, I think it does turn into morphine in our liver, but that's still not cannabis.
Does this mean I am a drug addict? grin

FannyCornforth Wed 08-Mar-23 11:25:26

Jane someone upthread claimed that co codamol contains cannabis.
As everyone has said, of course, it doesn’t.

Jaxjacky Wed 08-Mar-23 11:56:59

I know my children pretty well, we get on very well and I know a fair bit about their lives, including what they’ve chosen to tell me about any drug dabbling. I don’t expect to know everything, neither should I.
My parents certainly didn’t know what I got up to in the 70’s, including drug taking.

well it is pretty addictive! I have withdrawal from codeine even if I only take a couple. Maybe I should try cannabis instead? wink

henetha Wed 08-Mar-23 18:56:26

I've thought exactly the same thing actually. ! 😁
I'm supposed to take 6 co-codamol per day but rarely take more than 2 as I'm worried about getting addicted. And they play havoc with my digestion.😏

icanhandthemback Wed 08-Mar-23 22:41:47

Be very aware of anything with codeine in as it is addictive. My Mum had the most terrible withdrawals when they said she should stop taking it. They moved her on to Fentanyl patches and when she came off those, we had to call for help as her withdrawal was horrendous. It was like looking after a junkie going cold turkey. I honestly thought it would kill her.

Sorry for reviving this thread. What about chronic pain? Does it help with that?

Cossy Wed 02-Oct-24 13:44:44

No but my daughter has used it for pain control when everything else failed and it was amazing. Its a disgrace that its not available for people with chronic pain issues legally and easily .
She wont buy it as she thinks its the wrong signal to give her kids but when a friend gave her some she tried it and was amazed at the results .
It should be lagalized for people in her position

It is now legalised in the UK, but almost impossible to get on the NHS.

I have it privately

Indigo8 Wed 02-Oct-24 14:42:10

I smoked it illegally at a party once, in my teens. I have never been a regular smoker of tobacco or anything else. It did nothing for me so I haven't smoked it since.

Yes indeedy!

Mancjules Wed 02-Oct-24 15:40:43

I do know that when the time comes I'll choose THC over a legal opioid any day.

I can only speak from experience having had to buy from a dealer.
My friend had multiple sclerosis. The seizures caused her terrible pain. Before she had the pain implant that was the only thing that worked.
If you are going to source some be careful. The plants now can be very strong.

FlexibleFriend Wed 02-Oct-24 20:54:25

I suffer with chronic pain and have been on high dose Morphine for years. The pain is increasing and the Morphine is no longer helping as much as it should. I'd like to come off it and so have signed myself up to use medicinal cannabis under a consultant on the uk medical cannabis registry it will cost around £200 a month but if it works it will be worth it. So we will see.

Ladyleftfieldlover Wed 02-Oct-24 21:02:02

My brother in Australia uses medicinal cannabis to control the almost constant pain he is in. He also smokes cannabis.

Skunk is a whole new ballgame that’s the problem now it isn’t just cannabis of the 60 s

This. I used to know someone whose son was utterly screwed up by skunk.

I did once try a joint in my student days (kindly provided by future dh!) but it didn't really do anything for me, so it was a one off.

Iam64 Thu 03-Oct-24 08:48:42

Skunk is indeed a whole new ballgame. There seems no doubt it contributes to mh problems especially in the vulnerable.
I’d like to see medicinal cannabis on prescription, it’s pain relieving properties are good

Happy days.

I wouldn’t know how to get marijuana ,even if I wanted to try it. Perhaps I’ll put it on my bucket list and research that one .
